I've been trying to find reputable research referring to marijuana and pregnancy but haven't had any luck. If anyone knows any good peer-reviewed studies please post a link. I have a feeling there isn't much out there but its worth a shot. Thanks in advance.

Google acog committee opinion marijuana to hear it straight from the horse's mouth
  • It seems like a lot of people are up in arms because I used the word beautiful to describe my friend's children... But they are!!! I'm not saying if you take cannabis during pregnancy that your kids will be more attractive, I'm just describing actual children that I know. In their case, the parents are also very attractive, intelligent and successful, so I'm sure genetics plays a big part. Also their parents are also very concerned about nutrition and exercise which probably also enhances appearance!!
  • Attacking me (someone you don't know, trying to give an honest perspective) does not change the truth that i am expressing.

So many people judge freely what they don't understand. Marijuana is a natural herb that grows naturally, is a very healing substance that is known to heal many different things. There is a far less risk in consumption of marijuana then there is a associated with plenty of things which people take for granted and do all the time in our society. For example unnecessary medical intervention, Epidurals, low quality formula feeding, consumption of high fructose corn syrup and consumption of chemicals like aspartame (in things like Diet Coke), fish and meats full of antibiotics and low-quality... in my mind all of these things pose a higher risk to your baby than marijuana . And yet since since society normalizes all these things people just think it's fine, and since society demonizes marijuana, people are very quick to judge it. Because people don't think for themselves. The only real study that has ever been conducted involving marijuana and pregnancy in Jamaica resulted that there was no adverse effect, and if anything, a slightly positive effect to babies of parents who smoke marijuana . I have personally known several people who have smoked cannabis in a therapeutic ways during their pregnancy, and I can honestly tell you that their children are more advanced for their age, more beautiful, and at a higher level of educational understanding than their peers. It's kind of astounding from my observation . Although I am not saying it would be my choice during pregnancy, I know for a fact that it is not necessarily a bad choice if used in a therapeutic and moderate way.

Lots of things are natural, but doesn't make them a good idea. Your observational evidence doesn't mean it is safe; there are people who smoke and drink alcohol who have healthy babies, but it's still completely ill-advised.

I was just thinking this. When people say "it's all natural and from the earth". You know what else is??? Wild mushrooms, berries and all sorts of creatures! You know what can kill you in minutes??? Wild mushrooms, berries and all sorts of creatures!! ... Just sayin

You know what else is natural? Night shade and cyanide. You totally won me over though, my baby is going to be so beautiful after I take all these natural, healing herbs.

  • I'm glad for this comment ! Yes some natural things are good for you, and some natural things are bad for you and poisonous. It just so happens that cannabis is a natural thing that is very very healing to humans in many many varied contexts. One of the main reasons why marijuana is demonized by our society has to do with pharmaceutical lobbyists (did anyone watch the Democratic national debate last night, because they discussed that at length) who lobby against cannabis because it's a natural cure to so many things, and they don't want to lose profits. People interested in the subject really need to do independent research instead of just taking that normal viewpoint of pot is a drug, and so it's bad. That is an uneducated and nonprogressive viewpoint.

Okay but the point here is that there is no sound evidence one way or the other on the effects (short and long term) on a developing fetus during pregnancy. If you want to risk your unborn child, go for it. But do not advise anyone else to take your ill advised path.

  • I just personally am against it because anytime I see someone smoke they act like they are out of their minds. I don't care if people do it cause it's none of my business and I also think it should be legal and regulated like cigs. I just don't like it and wouldnt use it during pregnancy. It's like some other herbs we use all the time are great for us and yet while pregnant we are asked to cut back or stop. Why take the risk?
  • From my perspective, it is certainly no worse for your baby (in my mind) than getting an epidural or taking any other pharmaceutical medication while pregnant (which plenty of people do!.....) I'm not advising it. I am simply honestly recounting my observations. I am just trying to put forth another legitimate point of view on the subject for others out there seeking answers on my level.

On this I will agree as I have stopped taking even over the counter drugs unless I am in agony and plan to birth naturally hence my strong opinion against using pot while KU.
  • Ok this is my last post on the subject bc I'm not here to fight with strangers, I am a lover not a fighter! I only know how to love...

.... Just read the thread below, I am not the only one who has my perspective!

Loving my mushroom comment I see! :-bd
  • I googled this so many times, just if you do decide to smoke pot keep it natural as possible marijuana In pregnancy shows nothing bad will come of it, it'll help you eat if anything and sleep nothing wrong

I TOTALLY disagree!!!!! Whyyyyyy in the world would you want to put a substance in your body and risk it having a negative impact on your developing child????? To me it's the same as alcohol or any other drug, be on the safe side and just DON'T DO IT!!!!! If you cannot go 9 months without pot, especially for the sake of your own developing baby, you have a problem! :(

So basically, smoking marijuana during pregnancy will give me an advanced & beautiful child? Sign me up!
    LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Just keep in mind how different all our circumstances are. While no one is advocating smoking pot or doing anything 'just to get high', many MANY people have found medicinal marijuana to help with chronic pain, insomnia, extreme anxiety. It's becoming legal in many states. There are legitimate reasons for THC. Perhaps the original poster was seeking relief from a serious issue. I live with a debilitating chronic condition- IC, and let me tell you, suddenly being pregnant and having zero options for pain relief and management is terrifying. (THC in my case makes my condition worse, so oh well!) Of course, maybe she was just curious, that's ok too!
Due with rainbow rainbow rainbow baby on 9/29/17
It's been a long road- Let's just say that!
  • I have absolutely nothing against smoking pot. Unless you're pregnant or not an adult.

If you can't figure out something to cure what ails you during pregnancy that has scientific and/or medical documentation to support it then you are very, very selfish.

If a person wants to smoke pot for whatever reason, do it, but just not when you're pregnant and also exposing it to another innocent, little baby human that doesn't deserve it!!! Babies have the right to come into this world without being subjected to drugs before they even come out of the womb!

Raspberry leaf tea is natural but I won't drink it first and second trimester? Natural things impact the body.
  • I'm giving up the pharmaceuticals that I've relied on for congestion and the resulting sinus headaches.  I'll be without the one allergy medicine that works for me during allergy season in the spring.  Many commentors here have mentioned having to go off of meds for chronic, severe conditions because they either aren't proven safe or are known to be problematic during pregnancy.  Pot is no different, it hasn't been proven safe, so it shouldn't be going into your body while you're growing a new person.

In reply to whoever asked how chemical compounds (drugs, whether endogenous, exogensous, etc etc) could alter genetic makeup: Epigenetics.

But then again, there are no reliable studies because attach the word "drug" to something and it becomes the boogey man.

Most prescription drugs (including zofran, used to treat nausea in pregnant women) have a NOTED risk for actual birth defects. But the pharmaceutical industry spends literally billions of dollars a year convincing the non-critically inclined that their "drugs" are "safe."

Use your brain. Think for yourselves.
