BV metrogel question

This is probably TMI - proceed with caution. Lol
I found out I had BV, my doctor prescribed me metrogel. He didn't tell me anything about side effects or what to do, he just said use it like you would OTC inserts for a yeast infection. Easy enough.
However, I'm unsure about the amount of discharge I'm having. There is nothing in the search function I've found helpful and Google seems to have conflicting information.

I had pretty large amounts of thick, pure white chunky discharge. Whenever it comes out it's usually accompanied with mild BH. There is nothing that leads me to believe this is my mucus plug, but omg. I'm not sure if this is normal, or even what it is (meds, bacteria)? I'm on day 4 of 5.

Anyone have experience with this? When does it go away?

Re: BV metrogel question

  • I don't have this, but I have struggled with recurrent yeast infections and I would suggest you call your dr. When mine would come back I would have more BH and much more discharge. It may be normal as like I said I haven't been on those particular meds but it's worth being sure about I think.

  • It's not supposed to cause those side effects. I would call your on call OB and talk with them because having that kind of issue with it very concerning.
  • The box does say that irregular discharge is a common side effect. But it obviously doesn't describe how the discharge would be irregular... That's what is concerning to me. I understand if it's discharge as if the meds are flushing out or something? But I've never had anything like this.
  • I had BV about a month ago and treated with Metrogel. The discharge was insane, disgusting, and normal. It's just the way the meds are reacting with the bacteria in your natural discharge. It looks like wet, shredded toilet paper. It's vile.

Yes that's exactly it!!! When did it finally go away??
  • It took about a week plus after I finished the meds to stop being gross. Probably not what you wanted to hear. Of course, then I got a yeast infection from the antibiotics...
  • sorry. It's awful. I did use garlic to deal with the yeast infection though instead of gross meds. It worked better than OTC creams though and wasn't nearly as disgusting.
  • I had BV before I was pregnant (maybe a year ago) this is probay gross but what I did id take a shower, put the gel up in there, then the next day when I would take a shower id wash down there really good, and ( per doctors orders) insert a finger inside my vagina and clean out the residue.
    That helped ALOT.
  • I've had bv before, although not during pregnancy. I also had that kind of discharge but it gets better towards the end of treatment.
  • I've battled BV many times before getting pregnant and finally kicked it for good with a mega dose of metrolgel.  The clear medicine w/big chunks of white stuff is totally normal and it lasts a while after your done with it, maybe a few days.  I think its just the not normal discharge from the infection mixed with the gel, as well as your "self cleaning oven" flushing out.  PS the metrogel also makes me a completely insane irrational person which is a rare side effect.
  • Yes! I had it a month and a half ago. After seven days of the metrigel it was all better. But yes, the discharge scared me... I thought it looked like extra small curd cottage cheese, but a little dry...
