Spitting up a lot

My son is 6 weeks tomorrow but was over 6 weeks early also. In the last week he has started spitting up so much sometimes it seems like the entire amount that went in just comes right back up. I will breastfeed for up to 45 minutes just to have him spit the majority of it back up then have to feed him formula because he's starving again. He seems pretty gassy and is constantly grunting and pushing out farts. I think this is why he's spitting up. He also gets the hiccups a lot as well which I'm not sure is a result of the spitting up or the cause of it at this point. I've tried gripe water and mylicon drops and neither seem to have improved things at all. I'm calling the ped tomorrow because I'm kinda at my wits end. Anyone else go through this?

Re: Spitting up a lot

  • I am going through this too! My son is 1 month today. He is EBF and I think the spit up is a lot but maybe it isn't as much as it appears to be. And I think the way it sounds coming up makes it seem worse. But we have this same issue. We have his 1 month appointment Thursday so I am hoping to get answers. But some of what I read says it could just be a phase at this age. Their tummies are adjusting. I don't know. It worries me!

  • Sounds like it could be acid reflux. It would be worth asking the dr about it.
Both mine have it or have had it, but we are dealing with silent reflux. Besides the spitting up, the other symptoms sound like what we're going through. Hope you get some answers soon!
  • My son spits up a lot too. He was also six weeks early, but he's only on Neosure. The NICU nurses and our pediatrician always said it looks like more than it is, but it's hard to believe!
  • My LO has been throwing up or spitting up alot but it will come out of her nose too so I feel like it is more throwing up than spitting up... anyway ended up going to pedi because I was on the verge of a panic attack because I was getting really worried. He said that it was reflux and at this age the valve at the top of her stomach is about as coordinated as her hands and she will outgrow it. She also gained about 6 ounces in 4 days so she is gaining like a champ and he said that is what he wanted me to take away was that she is obviously getting what she needs. Oh and also that it is more of a laundry problem then a medical problem lol. Definitely go if it will give you peace of mind though because it made me feel alot better after taking her in.
  • Oh yeah also keep them sitting up for 20-30 mins after eating. This has cut down on it a good bit already and after a really rough week my LO has started burping alot better after eating which I also think has helped. She still gets really mad sometimes when she needs to pass gas but like PP stated their tummies are still working out the kinks so I think we just have to wait it out.
  • Just talked to my pedi about this and she said reflux most likely too. Also, he has a strong latch and may be taking in more milk than he means to. I'm trying to break his feeding up now to give him time sitting up and burping in between sessions, which helps too.
  • My 2.5 week old was struggling with this too- and my mom suggested I stopped having coffee. Huge difference. Apparently caffine can be a trigger of acid reflux.

This is interesting although I am not sure how to give up coffee. I'm pretty sure coffee is the only reason I'm alive at this point.
  • Yeah, the last few mornings have been...long.
I don't think it's the only reason he would spit up. It's not like he has completely stopped- babe is a noisy and messy eater and gets in a lot of air so I have to be diligent about burping throughout and keeping him upright after a feeding.
I'm going to try coffee again in a day or two and see what happens.
I guess at the end of the day these little ones are also just learning how to eat and digest and we mommas just have to wash more clothing and pat more backs and carry on. ;)
  • My son has severe reflux. He chokes on his spit up, occasionally projectile vomits, hiccups at least once s day, and it has affected his sleep

  • Didn't get to finish that thought! The only way to get him not to Lise most of his map is to let him have tummy time in. Mommy a chest at an incline just a tidbit
