How early is too early to get ready for baby?

I wasn't prepared for my oldest when my water broke. I wanted to be ready this time. How early did or will everyone start getting clothes washed and bags for the hospital packed?

Re: How early is too early to get ready for baby?

  • I'm almost 32 weeks. I have the nursery all done and the clothes washed for DD. My hospital bag is pretty much packed (minus the stuff I use on a regular basis). This is my second baby. My first was delivered at 37 weeks for pre-eclampsia. My blood pressure has already been on the rise so I just want to be prepared as much as possible since I also have to get my DS ready to go to his grandparents. I am not one to procrastinate. So I may be early in the all my preparedness but it's easier now then when I have 2 babies under 2 to care for.

  • I'm 30 weeks and have the crib set up..it's safe to say we are no where close to being ready. I don't think there's a specific time to wash clothes or pack your bags. Do it whenever you want!
  • I'm 32 weeks and plan on finishing most of my shopping within the next week and then washing clothes, getting the hospital bag together, and getting the car seat checked around week 34. That's the plan anyway
  • I am 30+5. As of now his room is pretty much ready -- I have the crib assembled and some hand me down clothes washed and put away in his dresser/closet. I am waiting for my shower (which is on the 24th of this month) to see what I get and what items I still need to purchase. After that, I plan to wash everything that needs to be washed, put his crib bedding on his crib, pack my hospital bag, etc
  • I'm 33 weeks... Have her crib and the glider out up... Waiting on dresser to come in but her clothes are all washed up... The car seat is installed as of yesterday.. Now waiting for the flipping dresser so I can get organized and my other baby shower is in 2 weeks so... Waiting for that too. I'm not sure when is "too early" but I definitely am a planner and like to be as prepared as I feel like I can be so we aren't rushing last second. I will probably pack hospital bag and her diaper bag around 35-36 weeks.
  • I'll be thirty weeks on Monday and I plan on having everything done by 34 weeks. I have very little left to get, I'm just mainly waiting on carpet installation to set everything up. My blood pressure has been slowly rising the past month or two so I want to be ready just in case bed rest is ordered or baby needs to come early. I don't think there's really a too early or too late though, it's really up to you and your preferences/situation.
  • My shower is at 33 weeks and I plan to have everything ready soon after that. The nursery is mostly done, just waiting to see if I get crib sheets, changing pad and things like that from the shower. Bags will be packed by 35 week i'll say.
  • This is my second. So far I have some clothes washed. Baby will be in our room in the rock n play, so just need to pull the trash bag off of that and wash the cover. We live super close to the hospital and DH will be back and forth a ton, so I think he will just put the pumpkin seat back in the car while I'm at the hospital. I guess I should get her bag ready at some point and find the car seat winter cover.

Things are soooo different this time!
  • I will be 34 weeks this coming week. I am going to have bags packed and everythung done by week 36. I am always behind. Was with all my others and always...ALWAYS..forgot something. Not this time lol
  • I'll be 33 weeks tomorrow and we have the room painted...we have most everything purchased except the car seat which we will be getting soon.  I'm wanting to get everything done by 35 weeks so I can focus on getting the rest of the house purged, clean and ready to go.  DH took today off to steam clean the carpet in his room and then start assembling furniture.  I'm off Mon/Tues and plan on washing and putting stuff away....getting the glider delivered Tuesday and the crib will be delivered by the end of the week.  It's slowly coming together ;)
  • I'm 32 weeks and I have everything but some nappies, wipes, bottle steriliser and a changing bag.
We've got the big things sorted but it's never too early to get ready- I'd say anyway :)
  • I am 33 weeks and have the nursery completely done, clothes/sheets/blankets already washed, and bag mostly packed. The only thing I haven't done yet is install the car seat. SO thinks I did everything too early but I'd rather be prepared :)
  • I'm 31 weeks I bought and assembled the crib and dresser/changing table this week. I do want to air out the gear to minimize off-gassing so I've opened the window and set a fan to blow out the window. I washed clothes so I could put them away (I only purchased until 3 months so I don't plan to return any). I'll make my list or start packing at 36 weeks. Not sure when to start the diaper subscription. I haven't purchased a pump or bottles but I plan to buy 4-6 bottles and wash bottles, pacifiers and any pump parts around 38 weeks.
  • 33 going on 34 weeks and I have the crib set up. I have organized all the clothes by size so now I can just wash them. I just ordered the changing table and the bassinet and my rocker is on the way so I guess not very much is done. I want everything done soon but it's hard.

  • 32 weeks tomorrow and have the baby's room ready. We just need to buy the diaper bag and bathtub, but until baby is a few days old those aren't essential items. All clothes and diapers are washed and put away. Around 35 weeks or so I plan to install the car seat, have it inspected and pack for the hospital. I'll be spending a day or two sometime in a couple weeks figuring out what I need to pack and purchasing post-birth items so I come home to everything I need to be somewhat comfortable.
  • Thank you everyone! I'll be 30 weeks on Monday and was thinking of starting this weekend. With day to day life chasing a soon-to-be 3 year old and working full-time i just don't want to be caught off guard. LO will be here sooner than I can imagine and I'm getting anxious to meet her!!
  • Omg I haven't done a thing. We don't even have a name and I'm 32 weeks! I was hoping to get some towels and a blanket in my car by 35 weeks since my last labor was just over an hour and I guess the crib is "set up" in that my 1 year old recently transitioned and we were too lazy to take it down since this one will be here eventually lol figured if I went into labor it's a great excuse to make hubby get the baby clothes out and wash them for me haha just kidding.
  • I had my LO at 38 weeks last time and had to go on bed rest for a few weeks before that. I learned from that to be ready ahead of time. Two pieces of advice: stock up on what you will need post baby ahead of time. Last time I had to send my sister to Target to get pads, nursing bras, etc while on bed rest and wished I had done that myself sooner. Also, someone pointed out to me not to put the car seat in too early. If you end up in even a small fender bender, it's recommended to get a new car seat, which of course costs money and takes time.

Do you know if this applies if it's the base itself installed and not both base and seat?

I would check your car seat manual but I know for mine it was for the base and the seat. DH got in an accident with just the base and Graco told us to replace it.

  • Yeah, I have my baby shower in two weeks, so I hope to be ready to go by 34 weeks. I will also post LO's eviction notice, but you know how USPS can be, who knows when he'll get it. lols

  • Was 33 weeks on Wednesday and have done almost nothing. My mom's best friend is buying us a pack n play with bassinet that we will be using while DS is in our room, and I think it should be arriving next week. My SIL just bought and sent us a carseat so we've got that. We have some clothes, a few swaddling blankets and towels, but really nothing else. Planning on ordering a crib and dresser/changing table set from Babyletto in a week or two since we won't even need the crib right away. My baby shower is in 4 weeks so we should get a lot of things then. If I go in to labor early someone can buy things in the two to three days we're in the hospital before baby can come home, right?

  • I am 30 weeks and I have the big items, (crib, stroller, carseat), and a start on a diaper stockpile, and have accomplished nothing else. There will be two baby showers in the next 6 weeks, and I can't even think about purchasing anything until those are over. We will just have to wing it if she comes early.

My husband looked at me this morning and suggested we get a hospital bag packed. I didn't mean to laugh, but it just came out. I am so not ready for this.
  • I am 32 weeks today. I plan on having things set up for him to come home by 37 weeks. Even if the crib isn't set, but more so a bassinet/co-sleeper, diapers, wipes, clothing, car sear, wearable blanket and so on. Anything I need to get, I'll purchase and my family has honestly been banning me from buying things, so who knows what I will be given.

This is exactly me down the 30+5 and shower date. Our crib, mattress and dresser came in today so right after the shower we'll paint the nursery and assemble. Then over the next 2-3 weeks I'm buying items we didn't receive and will start prepping nursery, washing clothes, packing bags, etc.
  • I recently had my daughter at 29w 6d and had nothing prepared!! It was super hard so if you're thinking like this get things done now :)
  • For my first I didn't pack my bag until 38wks. Since then I've had three different people I know have very traumatic preemies. So I'm packing everything this week. I've also made arrangements for my LO in case I need to go in, we have two different friends that are back ups and thankfully DH is 10 min away. My mom should be here when I'm 37 weeks.

I have most everything else from my LO still, just need to set up and organise. Need some 0 onesies, new burp clothes, and size 1 diapers to stock up on. But that's a simple shopping day.

Hey sorry if my question seems dumb clothes washed means u are washing down new clothes for the new born? I have already got my purchases done crib is ready hospital bag about to be packed just wondering if i ahould wash the new clothes as well
  • Yes, it's always a good idea to wash the baby clothes you are planning on putting your baby in. New, hand-me-downs, etc. I am washing all fabric that will come into contact with my son. I have a bassinet, changing table/dresser, glider, nursery is painted and I have a few outfits for him. My panic has subsided since I have the basics: a place for him to sleep, diapers, some things for him to wear. The car seat will be bought by my mom and my dad is paying for the crib which I won't need for a bit.
  • Pretty much any clothing, blanket, bed sheet, bibs, burp cloth or any material that will be touching baby (new or hand me down) I intend on washing before I use it for the first time.
  • I'm just about 33w and got most of the nursery finished today. I work FT and plan on it up until baby arrives so I'd rather be early than stressing at the last minute especially when I know I'll be feeling more miserable!
  • I'm 31 weeks just got the crib and sheets set up in his room, washing clothes this week. I have my other sons bag packed so I don't have to worry about last min with him and I will start packing mine soon. Never to early to be prepared for anything.
  • The nursery is complete most of the clothes are washed and bags are packed. The only thing left is the car seat. I live in TX so it's still hot and I'm afraid someone may see the car seat and think there is a baby in it and break a window or something.. So I think I'm going to just wait on that..
