Baby wakes up grunting

5 weeks old, sleeps from 9-12:00 most nights, 1-3, and after that, begins grunting in what looks like pain for the rest of the morning. I've tried gas drops, gripe water, even reflux medicine (but I really don't think that's it-he's gaining almost a pound per week). Someone please tell me this is normal and just a phase!! I think if he didn't wake himself up grunting and arching his back, he would be sleeping almost all night!

My baby always wakes up crying and screaming. But I think it's just because he's hungry.

My lo is 6 weeks and woke herself up grunting yesterday. She was having a bowel movement.

My baby does this too. Apparently it is them learning to use their bowels efficiently. They are working on their muscle strength & pushing action.

Mine grunts in her sleep every night.

Mine does this by 3am each morning and then continues for the rest of the night because she is trying to clear her throat, after laying on her back all night her throat gets congested. It's hard to listen to and there's no way help her!

Ugh, yes, same here. We co-sleep and the grunting wakes me up all. the. time. But apparently it's normal. 8-|

Yes mine grunts a ton when she is laying in her bassinet. Usually by five I'm desperate for sleep and go to the couch and have her sleep in the swing.
