Sex revealing blood test?

Two of my friends are pregnant.... One found out about 2 months ago (around 12 weeks) the sex by blood test and the other just found out today (at 13 weeks). Neither of them are high risk.

I did not hear about this with either of my daughters. I found out the old fashioned way at the 20 week anatomy scan.

I'll definitely ask my Dr about it at my next appointment but I don't want to get myself hyped up about it prematurely.

Does anyone know if this is a standard thing now?

There is a blood test available now, it has different names - harmony, panorama, verify21 - that is used to check for markers for genetic anomalies. It is usually offered to parents with a history/risk of genetic anomalies, and to mothers who are "advanced maternal age" but anyone can get it done, although insurance may not cover the test if you don't qualify (I think it's 150-200ish dollars? Prob about the same as the elective early sonogram). If the test is positive, be prepared to make a decision about amniocentesis. I am unsure the rate of false positives.
We always go with the real old fashioned way to find out - waiting until the baby is born ;)

  • My friend had this done as well and she was not high risk. Not sure what we will do yet. If insurance doesn't cover it we will probably just wait until 20 week sonogram. Something to look forward to mid way :)
  • Verifi can be done at 10 weeks. They have a "peace of mind program" and is it max out of pocket $99. Thats what Im getting in a couple weeks.
  • What you're talking about is a medical test. It is for detecting genetic abnormalities with the child It just happens to have the added "bonus" of also finding the sex out as it is looking for chromosomal disorders.

  • Ditto to what PP have said. Be sure to talk to your dr and do research on this test before you get it because you may or may not want to get the results (not about the sex, but the genetic markers). If the blood test shows that there is a possibility of a genetic problem, then the next step to find out with more accuracy is an amniocentesis, which does have a small risk of miscarriage. Basically, there are a lot of things to think about and it wouldn't be such a good idea to get the test just to find out the sex early.

(Sorry if I got some things wrong on this, this is just what I'm remembering from all the stuff I read last pregnancy. All I'm saying is the test is a lot more complicated than just finding out the sex.)
