GBS Positive

Has anyone else tested GBS positive?  I just found out I did today and so, of course, just one more thing to add to the list of worries.  Any STM's have any advice or wisdom?  I know it seems like as long as you get the antibiotics during labor it should be fine, but of course I had to google it and get myself all worked up.

Re: GBS Positive

  • No need to worry. This is not uncommon and hospitals know what needs to happen to prevent baby from getting it.

  • I haven't been there before, as I'm a ftm, but I have done a lot of research. Many women test positive, and like you said chances are if you get the antibiotics your baby will be fine. Stressing about it will only make everything harder for your labor, so just keep in mind your care team will do everything in their power to ensure a healthy delivery! Good luck, and relax :)
  • I had it with ds1 but not ds2 . Find out next week about this one .

It's very normal, if your water breaks you want to head on in to the hospital right away . That's the only big difference

  • I was very anxious about this too. Even after my antibodics, (2nd went in while baby coming out) I still worried about his temp. Stay positive more then likely baby will be fine
  • Try not to worry. (Easier said than done!) Yes, get to the hospital if your water breaks, but also remember that many times the doctor has to break your water so that gives them more time to give you the meds. :)
  • *stupid question* what is GBS

  • Thank you all!  That really does help and I appreciate all your guys' advice. :)>-
  • I had it with DS, as PP said just go in for antibiotics when you water breaks or based on the timing of your contractions (my dr gave me the numbers but I forget ). Even if by chance you don't get the antibiotics in time, there is only a small chance your LO will get it. But it is very bad if they do get it so all moms that test positive get antibotics.
If you have a scheduled CS no need to worry about it (I am not a CS fan, but that is one small positive).

    Thanks

  • I just tested positive for it and at first was really flipping out and she told me many women get it while they are pregnant and it's not a big deal.. They know I have it and they will give me the antibiotics I need.. I was going to ask how did some of you other STMs handle it when uou found out you tested positive for those that have and did it make labor anymore difficult since they had to give you antibiotics or what? I'm genuinely asking since I'm a FTM and its making me kinda nervous..
  • Do not worry too much about this, I was positive multiple times through out this pregnancy and also placed on antibiotics more than once. Just means they will give you multiple rounds of antibiotics for the length of your labor and delivery, to prevent transfer to you LO! Just monitor yourself in an attempt to get to the hospital with enough time for antibiotics before delivery if possible!!
  • It did not cause any problems for me while in labor. I had the hep lock in and they just would plug it in for 20 or 30 minutes, then disconnected it again. Further into labor I was getting fluids also so the antibiotics make no difference at it, it was just another bag on the pole.

  • As long as you get the antibiotics in time, you shouldn't worry about this. They know how to monitor baby for warning signs after, but this is just not something you have control over other than making sure you get to the hospital soon after water breaking or when your doc tells you to during contractions.

  • I didn't have it with my first, I did with my second. My test is next week for this baby. The biggest difference I can tell you from my experience is that as soon as your water breaks, they want you at the hospital. No laboring at home, or waiting for contractions to get regular. Other than that you have to have antibiotics, no big deal. Yes there are risks, and I am not trying to minimalize, but don't stress yourself out. Everything will be ok!!
  • I've had it with both my previous pregnancies and my high risk doc decided not to swab me this time around but assume I'm positive and will give me the antibiotics at labor and delivery. They tested it earlier in my pregnancy through a urine sample and said I was colonized with it then so no need to test again. I won't lie, I was definitively bummed. There wasn't anything wrong with my firstborn and with my second she had lots of other issues going on so that wasn't a concern. I've done research and there really isn't anything you can do to prevent it. From what I understand being colonized doesn't mean you are "infected" but that the bacteria is present. Like mentioned above, the babies pediatrician and doctors at the hospital will check on baby and also later when you go into the pediatricians office for the baby's 1 or 2 week checkup. They will make sure there are no late onset signs.. Even though it's such a rare and small chance anything will go wrong it still can be stressful. For me, statistics don't matter given my story so I can relate. I do agree, try not to worry too much..
Also taking a probiotic is helpful regardless so I'm taking a vaginal support one just to help prevent uti's and support proper digestion!!
My DH and I are expecting our first child! A boy.. we're thrilled :)http://www.thebump.com/profiles/kestes946/settings/avatar/index# BabyFruit Ticker BabyName Ticker Anniversary Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
