STM and FTM - Hiccups how often??

So my little girl has been getting hiccups on average 2-3 times a day. They started out lasting only a few minutes but now last up to 10 minutes at a time. I wasn't worried at first and thought it was adorable, but of course I read something online about excessive hiccuping possibly being a sign of cord compression. Now I'm worried.

How often a day (if that) did or does your baby get hiccups? And lasting for about how long?

I asked my doc yesterday but she just brushed it off as being normal and said she never even heard of the cord issue. This almost worried me more! lol. Just seeing if other mommies have experience with this too!

Re: STM and FTM - Hiccups how often??

  • Mine gets them 2-4 times daily, sometimes up to 20 minutes at a time. Nothing abnormal :)
He's still flipping and turning all the time, he has started putting his head under my rib cage and I swear he's bruised my ribs when he gets them.

  • Don't know what's normal but at 33 weeks she is hiccuping about 2-3 times a day and it will last anywhere from 5-15 mins! I am a STM and honestly can't remember from the first time around how much DD did it!
  • I recently posted a thread about hiccuping. My baby does it probably 2-3 times a day and will usually last for a few minutes. It's completely normal. :)
  • Thanks @BellaM110 ! For some reason I don't see it!
  • I'm at 30 weeks, and my LO gets hiccups at least 2-3 times a day, and they last about 10-15 minutes. I was told everything is fine, and going well. :) What gets me, is when I feel the hiccups in the middle of the night, when my LO happens to get them at night. I am usually sleeping good, too! :))
  • I am no doctor but i was also worried and asked talked to my OB about the hiccups. He said its actually a sign that baby is healthy and everything is functioning as iy should (breathing and swallowing etc)

I dont know about you but I am going to choose to accept that.

  • My doctor told me that hiccuping is a good neurological sign when I asked her about it. My LO hiccups quite a bit as well.

  • I'm 34+3 and in the past week baby went from hiccups once or twice every couple of days to at least one to two times a day. Totally normal, especially as they start swallowing more amniotic fluid.

  • 29+ weeks and mine gets hiccups 1-2x per day. Ive also read that it's a good sign
  • Thanks everyone. I actually went to the hospital today because the last two days there was a reduction in fetal movements -- still moving, just not as often or as strong. Coupled with the hiccups I was really nervous. I also had a smoothie with lots of fresh fruit and veggies today and she didn't move right after like she normally does. It took like an hour to get a little something out of her and it worried me. So I called the doc after work and they were closing. They suggested I go to the hospital bc a reduction in fetal movement shouldn't be ignored. Thank God everything ended up being ok with her. After the heart monitoring I basically insisted on an ultrasound for peace of mind that the cord wasn't around her neck. They let me know that even if it was there's nothing they actually do about it, which I didn't know, and that's it happens in 25% of all births. My aunt had a stillborn because of the cord being around the babies neck so it has always been a fear of mine. Anyway, in the ultrasound it looked like there was nothing around her neck. While I know seeing it if it were would have freaked me out, I felt like I needed to know bc I would worry either way.

Also, while there the nurse and TWO doctors said they have never heard about hiccups possibly meaning a cord issue. I don't know if this part is true (I guess I should believe it), but one dr said that even if they were hiccuping all day, every day it wouldn't mean that there's an issue. Sorry I wrote so much, I just wanted to put this out there for any other mommies that are total worry worts like me. I felt a little crazy going in there but I'm glad I did! Now praying nothing else to worry about!!! :(
  • I read that hiccups are practice for breathing.
  • I have only once been able to really tell hiccups from just general movements.

  • Yeah I have trouble telling what is hiccups. FTM here and he stays pretty active so I'm not sure what's him playing and what's hiccups.

For me they feel like muscle twitches, but they are rhythmic like our own hiccups. It really depends on baby's position that you feel them. Mine usually stays head down so it feels like a gentle muscle twitch on my pelvis. Sometimes they are hardly noticeable. When he flips and is head up, he hits my ribs and they feel a lot more rough. Your babies might not be in prime hiccup-feeling position.
  • I've never heard that hiccups meant a cord issue, I've only heard it was breathing practice. Also, while cord around the neck can be worrisome, my brother was born with the cord wrapped around his neck 3 times. Obviously not ideal, but he was just fine. You can worry about anything and everything, and as moms, we do, but don't freak yourself out over every little detail. Babies moments slow down during growth spurts.
  • I haven't felt any hiccups with this pregnancy, but my oldest daughter got them several times a day while I was pregnant with her.

I'm 34 weeks and the hiccups have increased in the last week to about 3 x's a day and last for maybe 10-15 mins. They are also more intense, can feel them stronger than before. Dr said it's all normal.
  • How far along are you? If you check your home page and read the little updates it gives you per week it actually explains that baby is hiccuping at this point in your pregnancy. It's a good sign he/she is practicing for when the time comes to breath in the real world
