Let's talk induction

FTM scheduled for induction on Sunday if baby doesn't come sooner. I will be 41 weeks exactly.

Who has been induced before? What was your experience? I know it can be done differently by different doctors and everyone responds differently. Just getting some ideas as to how it goes and what to expect!

  • My induction ended in an emergency c section. Started the gel at 8 am, contractions started at 2, by 8 pm I was 8 cms, baby was in a really bad position and ended up emergency c section, he was 9.1 lbs !

  • Glad you made this post! I'm also scheduled to be induced Sunday! I will be 39 and 6 on Sunday and my midwife dosnt want me to go much longer than that because of a previous shoulder dystocia(even though they can't really tell if it was caused by size or position) -- anyway this is my third baby but 1st time being induced and I'm not sure what to expect either. Looking forward to reading there experiences- and good luck on Sunday!
  • My induction took forever, but otherwise was good. I was induced for high blood pressure. When I went in my cervix was closed and 50% effaced. I think the status of your cervix plays a great role regarding what your doctor will do. I received cervidil for 12 hours to ripen my cervix and went from close to 1cm. Doctor decided to do another round of cervidil. At the end of thst round I was having contractions and they gave me IV pain medication. When the checked me, I was still at 1cm and my contractions had stopped. They gave me pitocin for 8 hours without further cervical change. At that point, Doctor asked me if I wanted to keep going or if I wanted a c-section as it had been 36 hours of induction with minimal change at that point. I decided that as long as we had options for induction and baby girl was doing well, we would keep going. They then placed a bulb foley and continued pitocin. Four hours later I was 4cm dilated and was having strong but manageable contractions. They broke my water and I got an epidural which allowed me to rest. Seven hours later my daughter was born vaginaly after less than 10 minutes pushing. Good luck!
  • I was induced at 38 weeks because of high blood pressure. They just did pitocin because i was already 3cm and 50% effaced. They started me on pitocin 9am on the 2nd and it didnt do much so they quit for the evening and started again the next morning. By noon on the 3rd i was fully in labor. I felt all my contractions fully in my spine and the pitocin made them really close together so it was very painful! I was dead set against an epidural but decided to get on around 3:30pm because the pain was so bad! I was 5cm when they started the epidural. Once i had that it was so much better though! I fell asleep for two hours and when i woke up they went to check me and her head was like right there! I only pushed for five minutes and my beautiful baby girl was born!! I was really anxious about being induced but it went much better then i expected!
  • I'm a FTM that was induced this week. I went in at 2 cm and 80% effaced. I was apparently already having contractions about 10 minutes apart, but wasnt feeling them. I had the Foley bulb the night before and pitocin started Tuesday morning. They also broke my water early that morning as well. I got an epidural around 3:30 at5-6 cm and she was born at 12:28 the next morning after pushing for about 40 minutes. It was a long day with me being at 8 cm from around 6:00 until 11:00, but not a bad experience and once i had the epidural I was able to get some rest because before I was mostly having back labor pains that kept me from being able to rest at all.
  • I'm thankful for this post! I too am a FTM and will be induced the 22nd if no baby before that. I'll be 41 weeks exactly. I was checked yesterday and I'm not dilated at all and my cervix is still way back. I'm nervous about inducing but she can't stay in there forever! Im happy to see some positive experiences!

That's why I was induced too.
My previous son had shoulder dystocia, broken left clavicle and nerve damage, but my induction turned to c section :( !
  • This is encouraging to read. My doctor is giving me the option to induce after 39 weeks. I'm 38 weeks 1 day right now so I'll make the decision next week if she doesn't come before then. I'm nervous to induce but I've been so miserable since week 30. So much pain. Is it bad that I just want to induce and not wait any longer? I'm so ready to meet her!
  • I was induced for low fluid -2 days before due date. Had the blub followed by pitocin and then water broken. Labored 5 hours then begged for epi. It was hard to place but after that smooth sailing. Total labor 7 hours. 20 minutes of pushing. Small tear. Fast recovery. Lovely darling baby boy!

I am getting induced on Monday if nothing happens until then.  I will be 41w 3d.  Tomorrow morning my midwife is having me start cytotec, where I will then be monitored for 3 hours to see how I respond to that.  I have another attempt of that scheduled for Sunday (before the Packers game ;) ).  Then if nothing happens then, then I will be induced Monday.  Super nervous as I was planning on a med free birth, but plans change!

Has anyone had experience with cytotec?  They don't offer cervidil anymore because it is too expensive.  There are more risks with cytotec, but I have talked with my MW about this for a while yesterday and I am trusting her.

  • I'm glad to read all the positive stories of being induced and still delivering vaginally. I'm 2cm dilated currently, cervix is soft and in the right position so I feel good if I have to be induced next week and hopefully avoid a c section.

  • @JennKempen : I am a FTM and have not yet delivered so I do not have experience with Cytotec. That said, I have heard that Cytotec (misoprostol) is riskier, perhaps significantly riskier, than Cervadil (prostaglandin E2).

One of my midwives directed me to the Childbirth Connection website for information. Towards the bottom of this web page I linked below, they describe the different induction methods and what the best evidence shows results from their use.

    https://www.childbirthconnection.org/article.asp?ck=10652

@komorebi had posted months ago in a different thread warning about misoprostol. I forget the exact reasons.

I do know that the use of Cytotec to induce labor or soften the cervix is off-label use. In other words it was not studied for that purpose. It was made to treat stomach ulcers; uterine contractions are a side effect. It works faster than Cervadil and can cause uterine rupture. I just did a little research on it. Intetestingly Cervadil is a Category C (may be risks) medicine during pregnancy, but Cytotec is a Category X, meaning it should not be used (there are demonstrated risks).

I don't say any of this on purpose to scare anyone. All I can say is based on what I have read, I would request the use of the foley bulb or Cervadil. I would pay the cost for Cervadil rather than take the risks for Cytotec.
  • I'm being induced Monday if he hasn't arrived by then. I'm 75% effaced and 3cm. I was only a fingertip dilated last Friday so not sure if he will hold off over the weekend. He said they will give me a pitocin drip and rupture my water and get me the epidural. Nervous but ready ... My first I had a terrible experience with pitocin but didn't have an epidural for 16 hours and labored for 29 with 4 hrs of pushing ... Prayin it is easier this time
  • I was told I'd be getting something orally at first (I go in at night) and then maybe pitocin the next day? I don't know if that's normal. I thought my MD said Cervidil but when I try to find info on Cervidil orally it leads me to Cytotek. I don't know if I got things mixed up or not. I'm very nervous! Good luck to those of us requiring induction! I'm hoping I won't have to.
  • I was induced on the 8th.  I think he Pitocin really makes the contractions more intense and painful so I would recommend the epidural if you are induced.  It's not fun, it's labor but it's worth it especially if your baby is late or measuring big as mine was, he was 9 lbs 9 oz! and 22 inches long :)  Another thing is that it's hard to move around with the IV pole but you can still move into different positions in your hospital bed.  I thought that I would want to walk and move around but I just wanted to lay down.

  • Induced both pregnancies. Both vaginal deliveries. First was at 41 w 2 d and second at 40 w (due to low fluid). Both were cervadil the night before and pitocin the next morning at 6 am. With my first, it was a gradual change through the day, ready to push at 3 pm, born just after 5 pm. With this baby, no progress was happening until they broke my water at noon (cervadil did nothing for me this time), went from 1-5 cm by 1:30. Ready to push at 4:15 and he was born at 4:41. Induction really isn't the worst thing!

  • My doctor said that if I do have to be induced that I'm "a good candidate for a foley bulb." Anyone know what being "a good candidate" consists of? The doc made it sound like a breeze in comparison to a pill start, but I've done a small amount of research and am reading both really good and really bad things. Yikes.
  • I was induced bc my water broke and my contractions were inconsistent and not productive so I was given pitocin to help move things along. The contractions were so strong so if they offer you the epidural I recommend taking it. I was anti-meds at first but the epidural allowed me relax and to get some much needed rest for when I had to push. I had a 2nd degree tear (my son was nearly 10lbs) but other than that my delivery was uneventful. It was a long process so try to eat something that will hold you over.

    Good luck :-)
  • I am being induced Saturday at 41 weeks, hoping it goes smoothly! Baby is just too comfortable and fluids are very good. FTM too.
  • Went in Tuesday for induction at 5:30 am at 40w1d... by 1:38pm I had my baby :)

I go in this next Tuesday at 530 as well for induction, I'll be 41 wks, 5 days. Hoping my labor is as quick as yours seeing as I've had an aversion to induction the whole time. Hopefully he comes sooner!! Congrats to you!!
  • Hoping baby will come around this weekend...however I am not due until Wed the 21st...I have an induction scheduled for the following day if she doesn't come by then!! Anxious, excited, and nervous!!! :x /:) @-)
  • I'm a FTM and I'm being induced tuesday night if my baby boy doesnt come before that! Im 2 cm dilated. I'll be 40 weeks and 6 days! I'm so nervous about being induced so I'm hoping he comes soon!
  • Inducing monday 10/19 if nothing happens this weekend!! I've been dilated to a 2.5-3 for three weeks with no contractions.... so I'm thinking nothing will happen this weeked unfortunately.
  • Im so glad you posted this! I'm inducing tomorrow at 730AM :) Very nervous! Its good to hear other peoples experiences! Im a FTM too, as of last Friday I was 70% effaced and 3cm dilated!
  • Today at my appointment I was put on bed rest due to high blood pressure. Doc wants to see me Monday instead of my due date (wed 10/21) and if my BP is still high I'll get induced! so nervous/ excited!
  • I was induced at 42 weeks last Thursday night and it was a really good, smooth, fast experience (though my OB did tell me it was uncharacteristically smooth/fast for an induction). I was very nervous about it and afraid of ending up with a c section. I was only 1 cm dilated when admitted to the hospital and was given two rounds of misoprostol (sp) overnight Thursday and didn't end up needing pitocin at all. I was contracting at admission but couldn't feel them, and the contractions intensified overnight. By 4 or 5 am they were very painful and I labored in the tub mostly from that point on. My water broke around 8am and at 10ish I asked for an epidural which was amazing. I rested and by 12:30 was 9.5cm. I began pushing at 2:30 and my daughter was born at 3:30.
  • I was induced with my daughter. Started at 7am and she was born at 8:09pm (idr how dialated I was if at all when I started my induction) she's going to be 11 now. I was 12 days past my due date. An hour of pushing and she was here.

My 8 year old son came 12 days early on his own and omg I thought it was way worse!

I have an induction date for the 24th if lil mister doesn't come before then.
  • Looks like I'm going to be induced tomorrow due to high blood pressure. Good luck mamas!
  • I'll prob get induced Tuesday if this little guy doesn't come before hand. This thread really helped to make me feel less afraid. I'm just accepting this as good training for parenthood. You can't control a whole lot :)

I think you commented on another post about this and you were waiting for results too (I think!). I just got the call that I am being induced tomorrow morning. my labs came back and I have pre-e. I'm so nervous! Good luck to you tomorrow and all the other moms.

    Edit: to clarify wording.
  • 40 + 5. Scheduled to go in for cervical ripening tomorrow night, then induction on Monday. This thread has definitely helped me feel more ok with the induction plan. Thanks, mamas!
  • I just got induced yesterday! 2 weeks early they started me on Cervadil, you have to wait 12 hours for the medication to soften your cervix and then the pitocen. I don't know if I was having back labor BUT I started the Cervadil at 8:30 Friday night, and was in so much pain I couldn't move. 10 hours of Cervadil I was 3.5cm and I Asked for the epidural (around 7:30am Saturday). When the doctor came in to check how far dilated I was about an our later I was 100% effaced and fully dilated. The nurses told me to practice pushing and I was crowning- they ran to get the doctor and one more push she was out!
  • I am scheduled to be induced Sunday as well. I'll be exactly 41 weeks and I'm not sure what to expect this time. My previous pregnancy, I was 40 weeks and 5 days. I went in because I was leaking and learned I was 4cm dilated. After starting Pitocin, I had some strong contractions but they were manageable. That was around 2pm, started pushing about an hour later and baby girl was born at 5:27 pm. All I can say is try and relax, focus on your breathing, and push when necessary. Good luck to you. Wishing you a safe, healthy, and happy birth!
  • Induction is tomorrow. I'm preparing for a long process as at my last appointment I was still high and maybe only a finger tip dialated. I'm really hoping things go smooth. My sister's inductions both went in a matter of 7 hours but she was more advanced than I was. My mom had one that went for 26 hours. Praying that's not the case for me! Good luck to all who are still waiting for their arrivals, and congrats to those who have their bundles :)
  • FTM, I was induced on Thursday at 8pm at 39+6 for high blood pressure. Closed cervix when I arrived at hospital.
Cervidil was inserted at 9 pm. By 3 am I was very crampy and asked to be checked. I was at 2cm so they removed cervidil and told me to rest until the morning when the doctor would break my water. Water was broken around 9:30. 10:30 they hooked me up to iv of pitocin. By 11:30 I was having agonizing contractions and requested epidural. While waiting for epidural felt the urge to push. Nurse checked and I was fully dilated! (went from 2cm-10cm in 2 hours!) unable to get an epidural which was never something I ever dreamed of! Baby girl arrived at 12:45.
Although it was by far the hardest and most painful things I've ever experienced the pain disapears the minute the baby is out and it's all worth it!

Hope everything goes well for you! The induction wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. Didn't even need pitocin.
