No ultrasound yet!

I'm 9 weeks along and had an appointment with my doctor today. She said I wouldn't get an ultrasound until about 18-20 weeks! I was surprised by this because of all the lovely ultrasounds I've been seeing here! How did you all get your ultrasounds so early!?

Re: No ultrasound yet!

  • Each practice is different. My practice does a dating scan around 7-10 weeks and then the anatomy scan at 18-20 weeks. I have my first u/s scheduled for 10/21 which I will be about 10 weeks.

  • We elected to get one and paid out of pocket as our insurance only pays for one around the 20 week mark.
  • My practice offers a 12 week NT/1st tri screening and the standard 20 week anatomy scan. They'll do extras if problems or concerns arise.

How much did yours cost? We were going to do
the Trisomy screen, but I don't have any risk factors so it's not covered...
  • My insurance says they still cover ultrasounds, but the doctor says only if deemed medically necessary
  • So weird! I will have 3 US by Dec all covered by insurance. I've had my early one, will have the 12 weeks one (with the screening) and the 18-20 weeks one. Any extra US is $75. I'll be doing the 3D one, out of pocket is $99.
  • Wow! That's a lot! Are you high risk at all or that's just their standard protocol??
  • My hospital does one between 8-10 weeks, then the NT us , then 20 week anatomy scan.
  • It really comes down to the approach of the practice. Within reason, insurance will cover what a doctor deems necessary. While it is somewhat common for a dating ultrasound and anatomy scan to take place, without any medical indications of a concern it's really not necessary.

  • I'm not high risk at all. Just standard for where I go :) which is great for my peace of mind but the in between time of US is feeling sooo slow.
  • My original Doctor, and many others in my area, wait until 18-20 weeks. I ended up changing doctors and my new one does a dating scan between 10-12 weeks. That being said, we've had trouble scheduling ours and still haven't had one yet :/ I'm 11 weeks
  • My doctor has an older ultrasound model in one of the rooms that they use at appointments before the heartbeat can be heard via the doppler. As a result, I've seen two blurry images at almost seven and eleven weeks, but don't have a pic to show yet.
  • With my first two I asked for a dating u/s and told them I wasn't entirely sure of the date of my last period. So they did dating at 8-10 weeks but this time I am sure of my date and trying to keep u/s at a minimum so also will only have one at 18-20 weeks.
