  • I ate 2 caramel apples in September. Still alive.

So how does one eat a caramel apple? I'm pretty sure I always bypass them because they look difficult to eat. I do want to eat an apple dipped in caramel tho.

  • Not gonna lie, this just makes me want a caramel apple. I'm not worried about it.

I do have the same issue as @grapesoda1111, though. They're so hard to eat, so that would be the reason I don't usually eat them, not because I'm afraid of Listeria.

I hate biting into an apple, I'm a baby and cut it into slices. That's why I would have trouble biting into hard caramel.

The caramel isn't hard, or if it is, throw that shit away because it's old.  You can always cut the caramel apple into slices if that works for you.

I'll take your word for it. The one time I had one it was hard. I'll make sure to pick one up next time. Listeria can suck it.

Speaking of which, I made these bourbon caramel apples last year. Divine

Not gonna lie, I cut mine up into wedges and split them with DH. But in the past I have just eaten them right off the stick!
  • Great, now I want one.
  • Well, I had a delicious one today from eatable arrangements. It was a green apple slice dipped in caramel, then chocolate with a little salt on top. I had no idea, but it was yummy.

FYI, del monte Granny Smith apples just had a recall for a listeria outbreak!
  • In the fall, we pick apples from a local farm and then slice them/dip them in caramel at home.  We eat them on the spot.  The reports I've seen seem to indicate that the bacteria grows on caramel apples stored for a few days after having been pierced with the wooden stick (releases the juices that contribute to listeria growth).  Who knows... I'm looking forward to indulging a bit.
  • May or may not have this for dinner

That's what I'm thinking. Apples that get dipped and packaged and sent to a store or left on a rack for a day or two. I feel like the chances for a freshly dipped apple from the fair or something would have a much lower risk. The only risk would be getting bad caramel or apples, which could be the case for anything you eat so... I'm getting a caramel apple at the fair this week!
  • Where to begin?
  • Where to begin?

I'm so jealous!!!! Can come body bring me a Carmel apple after my baby is born?!?!?! Must... Resist... Delicious.... Caramel.... Apples!!!!! A little less then 3 weeks to go until I can indulge :) is it rude to ask my mom to bring me one to the hospital? If not I'm totally asking!!!
  • I don't know how I missed this thread! I need to go find a caramel apple tomorrow now! After spending 4 years in braces and not being able to bite into an apple, I refuse to now eat apple slices!

    Listeria everywhere!!!

Maybe I should've mentioned this in the UO thread, but I'm not into caramel apples at all. Keep your fruits out of my desserts. Also, I haven't seen any listeria outbreak on Reese's (or any of the other candies in the gigantic bag of Halloween candy I got for all 2 trick or treaters we usually get...)

  • This post sent me running to Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for a Tiger Butter Apple (Apple dipped in caramel, then peanut butter whipped with white chocolate, then drizzled in milk chocolate). I'm so excited to eat it, listeria be damned.
  • But what about candy apples? Like the red ones? I feel like since there's a stick poked in there too that they would "be a risk" for listeria?
  • Well just had DH stop for Carmel dip and apples. He got a organic dip not as good as regular but hit the spot.
  • Tonight I fully intend on the indulging in the same dessert I made myself last night. Sliced apples dipped in warm chocolate toffee sauce and sprinkled with toffee bits. So delightful.
  • WTF!! Why did I open this thread AFTER our local grocery store has already closed :(( Now I NEED Carmel dip and apples, deffinetly getting some tomorrow!! I finished a tub of Carmel by myself just a week ago......
  • UO- not a caramel apple fan here in the least! Blech. Oh and I have been eating raw cookie dough ice cream like it's going out of style and worse with my first pregnancy and I'm still here! Chill with the bacteria scares.

I definitely got side tracked, I meant to post this last night but ended up starting a new thread on a tangent when I thought of the other foods. Our state fair just rolled in and they've taken carmel apples to the extreme...just like everything else there.

And yea, I should have had listeria 100 times too, according to any pregnancy article out there. I love me some Italian subs, prosciutto and crackers, Bree, and fresh cut salami. I just made judgement calls on what felt safe. Don't get it from the old Walmart deli outside of town, don't eat it if it's been sitting out, and I've avoided sushi because I did actually get sick from it a year ago and that just left a bad vibe for the local sushi bars (2 different places in 2 days, not sure which one).

Mmmm, is it time for breakfast yet??
