Shower w/ baby trick

I had some friends over the other day, a married couple with two kids, who said their LO would not fall asleep or stop crying and one night they decided to take him in the shower (dad did it) and it instantly put the baby to sleep and worked like a charm every time since then. They thought the noise of the water plus the warm steam and skin to skin contact is what did it. So yesterday I tried it and was floored that my 4 week old daughter loved it. She did not fall asleep tho which surprised me but lately she's been awake ALL day. It did immediately stop her fussiness and crying - she was so intrigued and looked all around her the whole time and was very relaxed and warm and enjoyed me holding her skin to skin. I had a big fluffy towel I wrapped her in when done and within 20 min of getting out of the shower she was out like a light. I'm going to continue doing it, especially if she's super fussy during the day. Just wanted to throw this out there in case it helps anyone - I never would've thought to do it had my friends not said anything. One downside: holding a naked wet baby in the shower meant I couldn't wash myself or even her really - I needed both hands to hold her so it was really all about relaxing her and getting her to Quiet down vs actually bathing her (or myself). Curious to know if anyone else found this works for them and if they can offer and other tidbits about it!

Re: Shower w/ baby trick

  • With my oldest, we used to put his little bassinet in the bathroom when we showered and he would immediately fall asleep. Between the steam, white noise of the bathroom fan and water, he was out! Doesn't seem to have the same effect on our new little one through.

  • We use the shower to rinse and sooth baby too! I generally only do it when we are both home. Whomever is showering gets a few minutes to get clean, then the other passes baby in for some warm water and such, then the 2nd person is there for the pass back out. Slippery wet baby is difficult to handle!

We've done this for all our kids, and I honestly think it helps with water /swimming later in life. Eventually we let the water hit their face, even now we let a little run down. By the time they are bigger we have found no fears with getting their faces wet either in swimming or bathing itself.
  • I've done this with all my kids. LO loves a bath or shower with me. I do it at 8 pm then lotion after and milk. He's out like a light after that.
  • I do this also. Greatest idea and baby loves it! If baby needs to get washed, I sit in the shower floor and hold him on my knees while washing him.
  • It can also help to grip baby with a small hand towel around them. Makes slippery baby a little less slippery. I was always too scared to do this until DD1 was older.
  • That's an excellent idea! I didn't even think to just sit down to wash her. I want to try a bath today - I figure I can relax and have her bassinet next to me and the tub and just pull her in and let her feed and be warm on my chest then if/when she falls asleep just set her back in the bassinet while I stay a bit longer in the tub!
  • My little guy has been really congested lately so I sit in the bathroom with him with the doors closed and the shower running hot. Between the steam and noise from the shower, he falls asleep within a few minutes :)
  • With my first, I was too paranoid to even leave her long enough to shower, so I always brought the bouncy seat in with me and had her in it right outside the shower and kept the curtain open enough to watch her. It always soothed her. I think you are right about the combo of steam and white noise!
