hospital bag?

I am only 28 weeks prego but I pretty much have my baby's diaper bag packed. just wondering when I should have mine packed and ready? I feel it's never to early as things happen at any time this stage in the game.
also is there anything you should have packed but didn't think you would need?

Re: hospital bag?

  • I started to pack mine today. I have most of the toiletries packed but need to pick up a few more things. I started a list of other things to pack just in case we need to go early, at least I don't have to think about it, just throw the things in a bag.

I haven't packed anything for baby yet but I think it'll just be a couple of going home outfits, one boy one girl and a blanket or two for the car ride home. @macattack15 What other baby things did you pack? If baby is early and needs to go to the NICU either DH or I can always run home and get more clothes since it is already washed.

I'm interested to see everyone else's lists to make sure I haven't missed anything.
  • Loading the player...
  • With my first I definitely had mine packed by about 30 weeks. This post just reminded me of needing to do pack a bag at all, haha! I'm only 24+3 but will probably pack it in the next month or so.

  • Omg, not enough time!!!! So many things to do!!! Lol
  • I feel so damn unprepared as well. lol
  • I wrote a list of what I want to pack... The list is sooooo long!!! Lmao!! I think I'm going overboard...
  • Less really is more with the hospital bag. I never even used most of the stuff I packed and the hospital has a lot of what you will need. Definitely bring shower shoes for when they let you take that glorious shower. Also a robe for when you're walking the halls or just feeling chilly. Comfy clothes for the ride home. A boppy or nirsing pillow is nice to have too. Last time I had my bag packed around 35 weeks. Probably the same this time or maybe a little later.
  • With our first we brought so much that we didn't need. We did use our swaddle me, her hats we had monogrammed, and that was really it for her. We kept her in the kimonos the hospital provided. Def a robe that is to the knee. Shower shoes. Socks with grips because the floors are slippery and cold or slippers.
  • I have mine started. Last time, when I had my DD, I brought clothes for going home, slipper socks, hair brush, toothpaste, tooth brush and toiletries. I also brought a pillow because the hospital pillows aren't that awesome and my laptop. I was induced so lots of down time. They started the induction the day before but I didn't have my DD until almost 11pm the next day. I will be in the hospital about 4 days with the induction, if I end up with a vaginal delivery.
  • I brought so much more than I could have ever needed when I had my son... this time I plan on bringing a comfy outfit for the ride home, slip on shoes, a cute outfit or two for baby (hospital pictures aren't what they used to be), shower items, and a minimal amount of makeup. I also brought my own pillow, which was a total stroke of brilliance. I hated their pillows and this was just the little comfort from home that I needed.
  • To all that listed what they brought, thank you! Sooo helpful :)

  • This post literally made me go pack the babies bag! I'm 100% sure I will take it out and repack it before he comes in 10.5 weeks, but it was fun to do!

I made a list of what I need, and will start collecting what I need for me, and pack in the next couple of weeks!
  • Things that I brought and will again:
    some snacks (mostly for hubby)
    A pillow
    A cozy blanket
    Two outfits for baby
    A short robe
    Face moisturizer
Yoga pants and a loose top for going home in
A few night gowns with easy access for nursing
    Shower shoes
    Slippers
    Hair ties!!
    Brush
    Boppy pillow
  • Good lists ladies!

  • Here is my packing list. I modified a bit after my first was born...

    Hospital Bag:
    Black sweats (gap maternity)
Nursing tank with shelf bra x2
Black cotton boy short underwear x2
    Zip sweatshirt
    Hair brush
    Hair ties
    Chapstick
    Tooth brush
    Toothpaste (travel sizes)
    Shampoo
    Conditioner
    Deodorant
    Toilet paper (theirs was awful)
    Face wipes
    Phone charger
    Flip flops
Newborn outfit (one that zips w/ feet)
Newborn hat (0-3 was too big)
    0-3 month outfit (just incase)
  • I was going to pack something to leave the hospital in. Pair of pjs for when people come visit after the baby some nursing pjs my make up thick maxi pads some feminine wipes shampoo conditioner a toothbrush toothpaste then like some receiving blankets nipple sheilds a hat for the baby a few onsies a sleep and play sock for me and the baby and probably a pair of mittens for the Little baby
  • A random suggestion, I was sooo greatful to have burts bee's face wipes with me!  I was in labor for 3 days that resulted in a c-section.  Being able to just freshen up from bed, especially with an epidural made me feel so much better!  Also take an extra hair tie in case one breaks.

For right now I just have a box in the baby's closet that I've been throwing stuff into as I remember I want it at the hospital.  Especially a lot of the little samples I've been getting from target, babies r us and buy buy baby registry bags.  I'll probably start getting our stuff together in the next few weeks.  My last was born at 37 week so its nice to be prepared and just spend the last few weeks resting and prepping freezer meals.

Also one thing we did last pregnancy was went to costco and got disposable plates, cups and silverware for a month's worth.  I know some people won't like this idea, but it made recovery a little less stressful, and gave my husband one less thing to worry about as far as dishes are concerned.
Good call on disposable plates and silver wear!
  • Nursing pads! A must have! I don't know if hospitals provide any, but I forgot to add that to my list.
  • If you basically pack an overnight bag with the expectation that you're going to be dealing with the heaviest period of your life (read - comfy clothes), you'll be fine.
  • Not packed. Now you guys are reminding me that I do need to actually start thinking of these things. Depends. Lots of depends. Those were my lifesaver last time. I will be there 5 days again! Nipple shield just in case the nursing is getting hard. Books, my pillow, and really not much else besides some basic toiletries. DH can pick up whatever I want anyways because let me tell you it was so much better to not have him there after the second day. The man can not sit still!
  • I plan to bring as little as possible. Some clothes for me and babe, a phone and charger, a book or two. We are less than 10 mins to the hospital though, so SO will be fine with grabbing anything I later want. If anything, he'll be dying for the break!
  • I will start doing mine tomorrow. Once again I'm feeling so unprepared! :-\"
  • This might be a dumb question but what kind of bag are you bringing for yourself? Gym bag? Rolling bag?

  • Who will watch your other kids @EstrogenFest ? I think I remember you saying you didn't have family nearby (or I'm confusing you with someone). I'm already freaking out about pet care. I can't imagine trying to arrange childcare!
  • I don't have mine packed, but will likely do it after our childbirth prep classes.
I know that I want our bluetooth speaker so I can listen to music, and the one thing that I absolutely HATE at the hospital is their hand soap, so I've already told my husband we will be bringing our own.
Seems like a crazy thing, but I hate the smell, and I hate the way my hands feel after I use it. (My OB uses the same kind, and every time I go in there, I kick myself for not having any of my own.)
  • Well I've not started packing yet or plan to just yet - I'm 25+3 but perhaps at 34 weeks ish I might.

  • @Mumtobe+4
What did you use the TENS unit for? We have one for my husband due to an injury. I didn't even think it might be beneficial for any reason.

  • @stephanienjer The TENS unit is for your back during labor and was a lifesaver for me last time going natural.

Snacks were a must for me. I would be hungry during MOTN when baby woke to nurse and it was nice to have something right there on the bedside table. Another thing I will bring this time that would have been nice last time also for MOTN feedings was a night light. The hospital lights had 2 levels, bright and extra bright.

And my own bath towel was nice to have after a shower because I turban wrap my hair and hospital towels aren't big enough to manage my mane.

  • These lists are so helpful!! Thanks all for sharing!! My list is building :)
  • @stephanienjer I used it for pain relief on my back. Great for first stage of labour until I needed gas & air! Gives you something to focus on if nothing else. Tens and gas and air is all I had with my last baby and all I needed & she was stuck for a while! The first two I had pethidine too but I don't think it did much!
