Weight Loss into 2nd Trimester

edited October 2015 in April 2016 Moms
Hit fifteen weeks today, with my weight gain at.... -7. Everyone's talking about gaining (or losing) five pounds first trimester, then a pound a week for where I am now... But I just keep losing weight. I'm not working out (unfortunately), and I've been constipated since week eight (sorry), nor have I vomited since like... 13.5 . There's no reason for me to be losing weight, and I'm concerned for the baby.
Any thoughts or positive reassurance of "Ohhh, you're one of the lucky ones!" ?
Ftr, my boobs and belly have both grown a good bit, which confuses me more. Where's the added weight from *that*?

Re: Weight Loss into 2nd Trimester

  • I'm in the same boat, I'm 13.2 today and am down a total of 17 pounds. I've been 'showing' since about week 8 because of where my placenta is, according to my doc. My belly is already big and my boobs keep growing too, but I'm not putting on any weight. I'm actually managing to maintain now though, which is better than losing. Hopefully everything is going to continue to go well. I'm actually unable to take prenatals because they all make me unbearably ill, but am taking Folic Acid (but I always have to) last week at my NT scan baby looked great and was only measuring 1 day behind my EDD, so I will take that will all smiles. I was really nervous about that because I haven't had the greatest nutrition intake, but I was reassured by my doc and by ultrasound that baby is taking what it needs from us, and WE will be the ones to suffer, not them. Good luck and keep treckin on!

  • Maybe up your calories? How are you feeling? Can you stomach more food? Try calorie dense foods... Nuts, peanut butter, avocado, full fat dairy... You could add in nutritional drinks like ensure. I'm sure your baby is just fine , but you DO need to start gaining some weight. Have you talked to your doctor?

  • I talked to him on the second, and he seemed a little worried, but didn't say much. I was still vomiting then, so I think he chalked it up to that. I'll be mentioning it on the 27th if it continues.
I'll definitely try to add in nutritional drinks. I've already been having smoothies in the morning to help up the fruit/protein/dairy intake.
  • If you normally work out but haven't been while pregnant, you could have lost some muscle mass. If that's the case, then even a steady addition of baby weight may not be seen on the scales.

  • @heathergirl89 that might actually be it! I used to work out full time prepregnancy, then ended up in bed rest during weeks 8-13.
  • At my 12 week appt I was down 7 lbs - Dr asked me if I was having bad morning sickness, which I wasn't. I chalked it up to eating multiple small meals a day (to help with nausea) that kept my metabolism going. I started out a little over weight so Dr wasn't too concerned.
  • I dropped 7 but I figure it's because nothing tastes very good, having texture issues ect.

I am starting to gain it back very slowly. And I am now down 3 going into the 2nd. I am ok with it. Little worried that once the taste ect comes back I will be making up for lost time and really put on the pounds. FWIW, I am heavy to begin with and my goal is to only gain 15

  • I'm supposed to gain around 30 pounds throughout the entire thing ._.
  • I didn't gain last time until after my anatomy scan. I caught up and gained 23 pounds though so it worked out okay. My doctor wasn't outwardly worried about my weight.

I have no idea this time. I'm guessing I've started to gain since we've been on vacation but I won't be surprised if I haven't.
  • Lurking from Feb :)

I lost 11lbs up until 17 weeks. I've gained 2-3 of that back and have maintained the same weight. At anatomy scan, baby was measuring 1-2 weeks ahead at 12oz. As long as baby is healthy, doc said my non weight gain was fine. Don't stress! If you want to gain or maintain, carbs and protein and fruits and veggies.
  • I have my 14 week OB appointment this Thursday and am down nearly 20lbs due to constant all-day sickness and just not having an appetite. I was worried about it and asked my doctor and she told me she would only be worried if my baby wasn't growing like it should. But as long as baby is measuring normally, she's not worried and thinks once I'm further into my 2nd trimester, I'll start feeling better and will be able to eat again and gain weight.

I wouldn't stress too much on weight gain or loss. I really think our bodies do what they need to take care of our little ones and every person's body will support their baby as their baby needs.  There is way less concern on this abroad than in the US, I've noticed. They don't give me any rules about how much weight to gain at all.  With my last kiddo (also born abroad), I really didn't gain anything but a little round basketball belly and didn't add a ton of weight the whole time and DD turned out perfect anyway. I've looked at pregnancy websites in Germany and in France (although am living in Dubai) and they actually recommend less weight gain that the US does - so, honestly mamas, you're all doing fabulous. And the fact that you think about the question just shows how much you already care about your little ones and how you're going to be terrific at taking care of them inside and outside of the womb!

  • I'm in the same boat. Im 16 weeks on Saturday and so far I've lost weight not gained anything. I had been a little sicky but nothing major :/ going to speak to midwife tomorrow as I'm getting a little concerned x
  • I spoke with my doctor about this yesterday, because I've lost almost 20 pounds. Granted, I was overweight to start with, but I still wanted to make sure everything was ok. My doctor told me not to worry about it, as long as I was eating healthy. Apparently, most weight gain occurs from 16-28 weeks. I'd say if you haven't started gaining any back by then, you might want to talk to your doctor about what you can do to make sure LO is getting everything they need!
  • I'm 13 weeks. I have lost 7lbs as of yesterday.
