Bicornuate Uterus

Hi all. Has anyone here been told they have a Bicornuate or "heart" shaped uterus? I just had my 12 week appointment and the doc said my last ultrasound at 8 weeks showed I had Bicornuate Uterus and that it could lead to preterm labor and/or c section due to breech presentation. Never having heard of this before I asked if there were different severity levels and she said they don't really rate them and gave no real inidication as to how "bad" mine was. After reading about it online there seems to be a wide range of severity levels and I'm annoyed that she couldn't give me any idea of what end I may fall on (i.e. complete or partial??) I also read online that 3D ultrasounds are helpful in these cases, so I asked if my ultrasound on Monday should be a 3D one and she said it wasn't worth doing at this time and to wait until the 20 week scan, as its standard for them to do a few 3D images at that time.

Everything I read online talks about high risk doctors, close monitoring, and in most cases - immediate 3D scan and/or MRI to understand the full scope of the problem. Did any of your doctors advise waiting until the 20 week scan? I'm not going to be able to rest for the next 8 weeks! If anyone here has any experience on this matter I'd really love to hear your story and how it was handled by your doctor / how closely you were monitored. Were you referred to a high risk Doctor? Did they tell you if it was a full or partial? Did you carry full term? I just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can so any experiences/information you guys have would be greatly appreciated!

I have an acquaintance who has a bicornate uterus and had 3 term babies by c/s. I'm pretty sure she had a few extra u/s throughouther pregnancies. I wouldn't worry about waiting for the 20 wk u/s. Baby is so small until then that it won't really be bothered by the close quarters. If your doc feels that everything looks fine now, I wouldn't worry.

I have a cousin with this and she had to have surgery to re correct it. And goes to a high risk doctor now ever since they noticed. She has had a baby boy so it all has to do with how bad it is from what i understand from what she has told me.

Sorry not much help but if it would make you more restful and less stressed out i would get an second opinion to help you be more relaxed as that as alot to do with a healthy pg.

My SIL has one and they didn't know about it until her water broke at 34 weeks. She was told that she would never carry to full term, but obviously pp has proven that to be wrong. I would think it would depend on "how heart shaped" the uterus is. If it's minor you might not have and issues. Sils is pretty severe from the photos she showed us. Not trying to scare you. I think it's a lot more common than people think.

I have one that was discovered by my first csection. I went into preterm labor at 35 weeks and the baby was transverse. My next pregnancy, they suggested that I do Makena shots to prevent preterm labor. I made it to 38 weeks but had a second section because she was breech.

I think the biggest factors are malpresentation and preterm labor. But it doesn't have to happen! It's great that you are aware so they can keep a close eye on you. I plan on taking the shots again this time and hope that maybe this baby will be head down. I'm hopeful for a VBAC!

FYI: They also told me that the more babies you have, the more the uterus stretches and the septum causes less issues.

I have one. Ds was 5 weeks early and it was a c/s. He was 4lbs 14oz and suck in my ribs.

I am pregnant with #4 currently and just found that I have one!! All 3 previous babies were full term, maybe a tad bit small but full term. Oh, and they were also all vaginal births.
So weird that I never knew until now!!

I discovered at 8 weeks with my first I had a bicornuate uterus & felt very much the same as you, worried & frustrated they couldn't give me much more info & told to wait till later in the pregnancy to check on it further. In the end did not really find out anymore except I was told to get a scan at 36 weeks (not normally expected) but was later told by another dr it was not needed. In the end, I had to be induced at 41+ weeks & bub became distressed during labour. Dr asked to see my 36 week scans & was angry that the other dr didn't do them as he said now I have no idea what we're working with here. We ended up having a c/s (which they totally made a beautiful experience for us & I absolutely don't mind at all if this is how this one goes too though we will try for VBAC!) & so far this pregnancy noone is concerned yet. I'm skipping the NT scan so won't be seeing bub again til 18-20 weeks & I'll definitely push this time for that 36 week scan for the dr to consult during labour. I'm wondering too if I should ask to be induced closer to my due date this time because I felt pretty comfortable right up until 40 weeks with my boy & then just became huge in less than 2 weeks so maybe if he had been under 9 pound maybe natural delivery might have been possible? Anyway, I had a few high risks to consider - GD, rh factor, bicornuate uterus & extremely loose joints with the relaxin causing dislocation & pain very easily (hips & back being the worst) so we'll see. Hubby reckons he can't watch me & bub's heart rate going through Labour again he said it was terrifying watching the monitor fluctuate between 0 & 200+ (bub moved constantly each contraction & was hard to monitor) & with the drugs causing intense contractions every minute or less he just felt helpless & scared. We were both relieved when we headed to theatre & had lots of giggles as the team sang little songs, joked & asked us questions about ourselves & then when my little boy was out there was lots of chat & laughter about how much he screamed (poor little thing had a massive headache from being wedged forehead first in my pelvis).
Anyway, I've found others with a bicornuate uterus & some had a couple of babies before finding out they had it & had all natural births so I wouldn't stress unless the dr's show concern (which might only be in the last weeks when it plays a part in how baby will arrive).
