2nd Trimester

Gender Confusion

At our 19 week ultrasound we were told "probably a girl" we definitely didn't see any boy parts, but didn't necessarily see girl parts either, like the 3 lines everyone refers to as a girl. Has this happened to anyone? Doing another ultrasound next month to make sure. But I'm curious just because I'm about to start buying girl stuff!

  • Why weren't they sure? Due to bad positioning of the baby? Because that happens a lot, everyone doesn't cooperate long enough to tell.

  • Just wait, don't buy. They said "probably girl" bc of NOT seeing a penis/scrotum but couldn't say "def girl" bc they didn't see any labia or ovaries/uterus. If you MUST shop save the receipts and make sure of the return/exchange periods! Boys are sometimes shy!
  • Save your receipts! Friends of ours were told girl because they didn't see boy parts. It was not even a "probably," it was just what they told them. This was at what was supposed to be a very well-respected imaging center in a big city. They bought girl stuff and low and behold out came a boy! It is much more common for them to say girl and it turn out boy than the other way around. All three of my boys had very obvious boy parts, no mistaking them. I would probably just consider it not determined and wait to buy things just because I wouldn't want to get all excited about one and then have it turn out the other way and feel conflicted.
  • Save receipts for sure! Stores usually give you 3 months to return clothing.
  • This happened to me also. I have brought some girl stuff and kept receipts. Easy! Most stuff I've brought has been suitable for either sex. Though I'd say both of our bubs are most likely girls- you never know!
@tooba22 it's hard to resist the lure of cute pink frills and glitter for some- me especially. :)>-
  • @ashhsa oh I totally agree! I love pink frilly glittery things!! I found out I was having a girl and went wild. I just would hate for OP to jinx herself and go out buying all girl clothes just to find out its a boy. Also, OP if you are dying to buy items buy gender neutral

Just to let you know there is never a for sure situation until birth. I have a handful of friends that were told one sex (not gender, that's much later) and surprise! At birth they had the other sex.

Yupp this 100%. Even if the tech says she's positive it's a boy (or girl), it's still just an educated guess.
  • I suggest waiting and purchasing gender neutral items if you really want to start buying things. @PrimRoseMama is right. Until birth, it can really go either way unless blood work is done. But I don't suggest doing blood work electively. As hard as it is, be patient.

  • I'm not too worried I have all my receipts on a magnet on the fridge. My first baby and I'm just the type of person that likes to know everything I possibly can to prepare. And it's not a tech it's my
OB that does them. She was transverse facing the ground so it was a little difficult to see. Was just looking for experiences if it has happened to you, not what I said to be "corrected" and telling me what I'm doing is a horrible idea. MY BAD! thanks anyways.
  • Okay... I actually said it has happened to me also... Baby's legs were crossed... Did you overlook my comment or ?! @kaytlyn567
  • If your ob did it in office instead of an ultrasound tech I'd trust it even less. We do ultrasounds in my office too but never to find out the sex of the baby because honestly the docs never do that and have less experience in that area.
Buy neutral stuff anyway so you can re use it or give it to a friend that might need it regardless of the sex.
  • I have this little gem from my first pregnancy (sorry I know how much everyone loves potty shots).  Anatomy u/s and the tech told us girl, never said 'maybe a girl' or anything, just congrats its a girl.  A few months later at another ultrasound we found out that he was most definitely a BOY.  We already had a girl nursery and some girl clothes, fortunately our large items were gender neutral.
Our other boys have been completely obvious at their ultrasounds, no doubting it.  This pregnancy is supposed to be a girl and even though I've had 2 u/s confirm that, I still feel nervous there's a penis hiding in there somewhere!
Definitely save your receipts if you can't wait a few more weeks to start buying stuff.

Soooo it kinda seems like u already had ur mind made up that u are going to buy girls stuff and keep the receipts.....so I'm wondering why did you even start this thread? If u wanna buy stuff and keep the receipts then do it, that's your choice. U said you wanted advise though and now ur just rejecting that advise cuz it's not what u wanted to hear.
She wanted to see if anyone else had similar experiences, that is all.
And OP, I assume when you say you were "corrected" it was about everyone saying sex instead of gender.
Shoot me now but I think sex and gender are the same thing. If your son grows up and identifies as a girl it's because of something that happened in his childhood.

Wow, just Wow!  This is so wrong in so many ways. There have been findings that there are differences in the brains of heterosexual vs. homosexual.  One article that describes this difference.

I don't think God would make it to where you are born wanting to do something (or in this case, someone, sorry) he says not to do. That's all I have to say about these "new found studies."
  • This discussion should have been closed. It's gone way off topic to something completely different and probably not appropriate for here at all.

Ehh who are you? The post TITLE is "gender confusion". We're talking to someone who says people who are confused about their gender identity were abused as children. How is it "WAY off topic"??? @busymum7
