Toddlers: 24 Months+

Multiple Night Wakings

Ugh I'm going crazy here. My son is 2 years 2 months old. He's been sleeping through the night in his own bed since 8 months old. He's been in his toddler bed since March. We have had the occasional nightmare, teething, or illness that has resulted in night wakings, but the last week has been so rough!

Tonight alone, he has woken 3 times crying and crying between 11 and 2 am. He doesn't get out of his bed, but he stiffens his body and cries so loud and gets himself worked up. If DH or I go to his room, we can just tuck him back in, sit for a few moments and he falls right back asleep. I really think he's wanting the extra attention from us but I can't keep on like this. I'm 5 months pregnant and DH works 5 nights a week so I have no help those nights. It's just giving me awful sleep. The other night I just brought him to bed with me but I do not want that to become constant. Any advice?

Re: Multiple Night Wakings

  • My advice is do what he needs when he needs it. For whatever reason he needs a little extra attention and most likely this is a phase that will pass. Maybe he's extra needy because you're pregnant and he senses a change coming. Who knows. If all you have to do is tuck him back in and sit for a few minutes then is it really that terrible?

  • I'm on the same boat!!! And yes, it can be that terrible. Our 2 and a half year old is doing the same this except we also have a 3 month old. I know it's regression:attention from the new baby but this mama needs sleep! We used to go in, simply tuck her back in, however were on month 4 of it. We started a sticker chart a few weeks ago but I don't think she even realizes she's getting us up so last night I tried something new. We can talk into our monitor so I tried that. Told her mommy loves her but it's not time to get up so lay back down. She layed right back down, stopped crying and fell asleep.
