Help me name this baby so I can get excited about her!!

Need to pick a name for baby girl #5 - joining sisters Kendall Claire, McKenna Breanne, and Laurel Elizabeth in January. Last name is V.....s. She will be named after my brother Charles who passed away in August. I'm hoping that picking a name will help me become attached because I'm not right now.

I asked a more vague post earlier but I'm not looking for suggestions. I've ruled out thousands of names. Even names I like (Aubree, Hailey etc) Trying to narrow it down now :). Original post https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12633365/help-baby-girl-5-needs-a-name#latest

  • Charlize is such a great name, and I like it with your other girls names as well! Bryony is my second choice, but I like all the names on your list.
  • I like Charlize and Aveline but I'm not a fan of Bronwen.

  • Bronwen is one of my guilty pleasure names that DH will never be on board with. I also love Charlize.

  • I think you should definitely name her Charlize Gabrielle. Since this wasn't planned and you're going through a hard time right now, naming this babe after your brother can bring you joy in his memory every day. I think pulling on your heart strings is your best bet to get excited for this little girl! Plus it's a beautiful name!
  • I think Charlize Gabrielle is a fantastic name. It's both pretty and strong, and it stands out without being "strange". It suits a "girly" personality, and one that might skew a little more tomboyish. It flows, it will look good on paper when she's older, and it pays tribute to your brother in a very natural way.

  • Flow-wise, I'm not crazy about Charlize as an mn. It just sounds a little choppy (at least it does with all the choices listed above). I think it sounds much lovelier as a first name.

  • I love Charlize as the first name. What a great way to honor your brother!

  • I voted for Aveline but I was torn between that and Charlize. Good luck choosing!
  • I voted Charlize Gabrielle,
    I also suggest Charlene

  • It sounds like Bronwen is your favorite. Why don't you just go with it?

TBH I don't really care for Charlize as a first name.  My dad's name is Charles too and 4 kids later, not one is named after him :)

Would I regret going with Bronwen?
UH. Do whatever you want since you've proven you don't care about taking any advice on here. Stop trolling the boards.

"We know that her middle name will be Charlize, after my brother Charles who was killed about a month ago.  It’s the only variant of Charles that I am ok with - I hate Charlotte!  Her last name is V.......s."

  • I like Charlize and Auriella. Maybe also consider Charlene. My bff is named Charlene and her fathers name was Charles (Charlie).

  • I have a thought, and I apologize if I'm overstepping...you seem to have a lot of complicated emotions tied up in choosing this name. Your brother, your ex, your own anxiety about adding an unintended fifth child...it's a lot of pressure to put on yourself.

Maybe it would be good to step back from it a bit?

DH and I chose a silly "in progress" name for our son. We're calling him Optimus (as in, Optimus Prime, as in, DH is a friggin' dork and I'm not much better). Maybe pick a silly name for now, so you have something to call your daughter while you set aside the real name. Like Pollyanna, or Shortcake, or whatever suits you. Or like you said, try out Bronwen for a while.

When are you due? How much time do you have before you have to commit?

  • My 9 year old LOVES the name Bronwen.  Whenever she plays, her name is Bronwen and her character in a video game is Bronwen.  She's begging me to name her baby sister Bronwen.  I think that might be a huge part of why it sounds so right. Because I hear my adorable 9 year old calling the baby Bronwen.
This may not be the most popular opinion here, but...there may be some merit to considering your daughter's taste. She's closer to the baby's peer set and may lend some insight into how other kids would perceive the name.

Also, FWIW...I'm more inclined toward the Irish spelling Bronwyn. I know we're all wary of the trend toward gratuitous Y's in names, but it feels appropriate here. I realize it's the masculine form, but that doesn't seem to faze people anymore...

There's also always the two middle name approach. Use the more comfortable Morgan for first name, give your daughter Bronwen and your brother's tribute Charlize as middles. It's not something I would default to, but might help you sort things out and meet all the things you're trying to do with this name.

  • Your names are definitely not neutral. People are going to love them or hate them. Bronwen is not my style, but it's not like it's Jazzmynne or some kind of hacked up/made up name. Everyone may not love it, but I don't feel like it's something that's going to hold her back in any way, so does it really matter if some people don't like it?

An "interesting" name is also by necessity going to be polarizing.

Honestly, I think most kids go through a phase where they hate their name. I'm an Amy, and HATED it growing up because so many other girls had the same name. In my 20s I wanted to change the spelling so it wasn't so bland. But I've made peace with it now. My sister is a Jennifer, and went through a phase where she wanted to be called Jeanette. Whatever, NBD.
  • I've loved Bronwen for years. DH isn't a fan, so it's off the table for us, but it's a beautiful name that I would happily use.
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • Bronwen is the most horrible name I've heard in a long, long time. Honestly, all of these names are terrible. Morgan is the only decent one.

Her whole story is nuts. Completely insane. I hope it's all made up.
