Although I always do my best to make sure DS is happy if and when we go out, he can throw a tantrum at the flick of a switch for no discernible reason. And while I always try to consider others' feelings wherever we go, I will continue to take him places despite the judgmental looks.

  • We always shop at Aldi too! Saves a ridiculous amount of money. LOVE IT.

My UO... I hate Facebook. I don't even have an account. I get that people like to keep in touch with friends and family but what happened to calling people and talking?

  • Okay okay y'all these are tame.

I feel like this is such a personal decision though. I also really hate it when people dog shame someone who got a dog from a reputable breeder(i.e., not a puppy mill but a well-researched breeder/line). I've have had breeder dogs and rescued dogs. There are pros and cons to each. I think so long as someone is making a well-informed choice and takes care of and loves that dog, people shouldn't really judge the owner of a breeder dog as "less" just because the dog on the leash is not a rescue. I certainly don't view shelter animals as "less" (like I said, I've had them) but there are pros and cons to rescue vs reputable breeder dogs.
  • Just caught up! I love Aldi! I let DS1 keep the quarter to put in his piggy bank as a reward if he's good. And my dog is from a breeder. They breed herding farm dogs and have amazing health history. He came with an insurance policy on his eyes, hips and knees which are all big expenses and the breeder covers if something happens.

The most awesome grocery store ever! :) it's a discount grocery store essentially
  • I feel the same way with sushi! Just not ahi tuna with a Mercury. I eat tons of raw fish, I prefer it over cooked fish. Never have I ever gotten sick! I've been sick from pork and beef a handful of time, so I feel like I take more of a risk having meat.

Sushi is perfectly safe from a reputable place. And I indulge my entire pregnancy with an occasional glass of wine and IDGAF.

I see both sides. I love that people rescue and I say that should be people's first choice of they are just looking for a loving companion. However, my MIL is a BMD breeder, and a good one too. She spends a lot of time and money looking into the dogs medical history, average lifespan, puts whole binders together on food, training, breed temperment, everything to ensure that people getting one of her dogs is 100% educated. I think purebreds are better for first time dog owners cause most dogs within the breed life up to temperment standards. For example we breed Bernese mountain dogs and we adopt to families mostly with kids because berners love being climbed on and cuddled and will never fight back. They just let it happen. But if you get a rescue you don't know how torlorent that dog will be. Even my MIL made that mistake where she worked at a rescue and brought a dog home and one day when DH was five he walked up to the dog drinking out of the toilet and the dog bit him right in the face they had to put him down.
Wow that was a long post. Lol sorry.

I definitely understand that lots of breeders are excellent at what they do and that they have amazing dogs, I just have a soft spot in my heart for poor dogs whose lives might end because they are homeless through no fault of their own. I am a first time dog owner and had no trouble with my rescue (though this can be different for everyone, obviously). We talked about our lifestyle, why we wanted a dog, and what we were and weren't willing to do with the rescue before we got him. He was fostered so we knew a lot about his temperament (lived in a house with another dog and with children). I think (good) rescues do an awesome job at finding the best match for you, because they do not have the room to take the dog back if it doesn't work out. We called the rescue asking about a different dog than we have and the lady flat out told us he wouldn't be a good match for first time owners, then she recommended our guy.

It makes me really sad to hear that the dog was put down because he bit the child. Small kids don't realize how/what they're doing will be like for the dog. Obviously I don't know much about the particular example you gave, but most dogs don't attack without warning. They escalate their cues to you but people don't often understand or pay attention. I went to a seminar with a trainer about kids and dogs and she said the ones that bite "unprovoked" have probably been conditioned to do so, as may have been the case with the dog you mentioned. The dog figures if no one listens to my body language or my growls, I've gotta step it up so they'll pay attention when I don't like something. Sorry for the rant, but I get really worked up over this, lol. I'd hate to see my kid or dog get hurt so it's really important to me to teach each of them how to behave around one another and never leave them alone together.

Also, here's a good video explaining what I meant about listening to their cues that always makes me cry because I'm hormonal: https://stopthe77.com/

Wow you found a great shelter! There aren't many that will match you. Most are "here are our dogs, who do you want?"
It was absolutely DHs fault cause he walked up to a dog that by the way was eye level with him even while standing and he made eye contact and said "no! Bad dog" then chomp. The dog was put down because no shelter would take a dog that bit a child. It was really sad, she uses that experience to educate people and when DH was 17 he did an eagle scout project where he educated children on if and how to approach a dog whether it's your own or a strange dog.

I think the private or community-run rescues are better than the places like the Humane Society since they're usually run by volunteers on their own time and in their own houses, so maybe we were lucky that way. I'm sorry DH was bit but it sounds like he and his mom made the best of a shitty situation.

They tried. He actually got bit twice poor thing. The other time was at a friends house and he walked into the kitchen not realizing the family dog was in there eating and she grabbed his hand. Still has scars. That was an Akita and they can be territorial so again he felt like it was his own fault for invading the dogs eating space. That's why we love our Berner. You do whatever you want to her. We'll be playing and I'll roll her on her back and she goes "ok this works".

I fully believe in the importance of GMOs and find no issue with eating them.  I also work in biomedical research and may have a different perspective on modified organisms.  They do no harm to us.

I don't like pets because 1. I'm allergic to most things.  2. Handle pet death VERY horribly.  I think I mourned for a year after my cat I was allergic to died.  3.  I hate cleaning pet hair!
