Baby names !

Re: Baby names !

  • Wait is there any sort of unspoken rule that the firstborn has to carry on the tradition of names? My family has had a Michael in every generation for as far back as you can see, and I'm trying to avoid M names since our last name starts with M. :p

Nope, But it's pretty common for people to use traditional family names with the first kid or two (depending on how many traditional names you have). For example, DD's mn (Kay) is also mine, my mom's and my great aunt's but there aren't any Lillian's for quite a ways back in the family tree. This baby will probably get DH's mom's mn (Jeanne) or DH's (Robert) which is all over his side of the family, but the first names are just ones we like. In your situation I would probably use Michael as the middle name and pick a first name that you like and that doesn't start with "m".

  • I LOVE the name Thalia for a girls name! Also like Vivian, Ava and Lily. Boy names are tough for us.
  • @RoseShadow873 I sure am glad it was a joke... I stared at it for a good while to try and see if I could sense sarcasm or not!! I couldn't lol. Then again. It has been a rough day for me so that probably interfered with how I interpreted it.

I don't think I have said our names yet. Nora(h) for a girl or Harrison for a boy. I think we are pretty sure on these but still up in the air. Funny that neither were on the list for our first!
  • Our baby boy's name will be Canaan Erik. His big sisters are Kinnley Claire, Ada Kate, and Brynn Marie.
  • Sorry, I'm bad at using sarcasm seasidesweete! :)

I'm honestly afraid to tell anyone my top names because I'm so worried that merely mentioning them anywhere will somehow start a chain reaction and the names will get super popular and I won't be able to use them anymore. Is anyone else worried about name popularity?
  • We were thinking that for a girl (same spelling!) after my late grandfather Charles!
  • We have Ellie Louise for a girl :)
We have Ben or Thomas for a boy but not entirely sure...
I already have two boys Logan & Charlie :) who sometimes get called Charlie and Lola

Same here. Plus, I have an awesome girl name that I haven't even told BF yet because he's always shooting down my names. I'm waiting til the end of the month since he doesn't want to make any suggestions of his own until then, which is when we find out what we're having.  8->

My SIL asked if we had any girl names picked out and I told her I wasn't going to tell her. DH and I agree on a girl name but I'm somehow afraid I'll jinx it by telling anyone IRL. DH is really picky so I'm not taking any chances. We don't have our A/S until November 18th so we won't talk about names much until then because he shoots down every single boy name and I'm tired of playing that game. I think he'll be less stubborn about boy names if we find out it actually is a boy.

He's also pretty against naming the baby any name that a friend (or their kid) has so luckily I only know 1 more pregnant person to get through before I know our names are "in the clear." I fully understand that nobody owns a name but I kind of get where he's coming from. I don't want to pick a name my cousin just gave to his kid.
  • @RoseShadow873 I'm the same way. Last name is SUPER common and we really want something different but not crazy off-the wall. I want people to be able to pronounce my kid's name! So I don't plan to share until much later, probably after the birth.
  • Does anyone here have a "boy name?" If so do you like it? I have noticed a lot of people liking "boy names" for girls, but do girls actually like having these names? I have a friend named Randi and I heard her complain about her name a lot when we were in school, and that's not even as boyish as a lot with the different spelling. I also think about it like previous comments said, that it's like girls can take boy names and not vice versa. If you take that further, eventually we will have more girl names than boy names because girls are claiming more and more boy names but not the other way around. I personally am glad my name is feminine and would not have wanted to be told I have a boy name my whole life. I guess at least if the kids end up being transgendered it will save them the trouble of a name change....
  • What do you guys think about a name like Greyson or Lawson or similar WITH the last name also ending in -son?? Is that too much??
  • @january8th2016 How many syllables is the last name?

I think it would be too sing songy.

It depends on how long your last name is. Lawson Dawson is super rhymey, but Lawson Anderson isn't as bad because of the syllable differences.

I know SO many little Greyson/Grey's and all I can think is that they're named after 50 Shades, and I didn't even read/see it.

  • @RoseShadow873 I worry more about local popularity. We named DD Lillian in June 2014 when it was popular nationally, but our hospital (the only one in the city) has a baby announcement board and there hadn't been a Lillian/Lily since 2012 and there weren't any at our church. My favorite boy name is the same way right now - fairly popular nationally, but not locally. Fingers crossed it stays that way. DH was one of many Mike's growing up so we're hoping to avoid that but know it's not the end of the world if we have to move somewhere their names are more common.

  • We have decided on a first name (spelled differently) for either gender. I have not been able to come up with middle names that I love. jordan/ jordyn

My name is Kyle. As a child, I absolutely haaaaaaaated it. Nothing is worse than being an awkward 6th grader and your first day in junior high, you get put in a boy's pe class. My junk mail is usually addressed to Mr. Kyle ... As an adult, it's not as bad. My wedding invitations were a little shocking to my husbands more distant relatives and he literally had to answer if he was gay or not. Silly. The "is it Kyle or Kylie?" or "wow, your parents must really have wanted a boy." question/statements are pretty old, though. That being said, we contemplating Charlie for our first daughter, but ended up going with Bailey. Maybe if my name had a more feminine spelling I wouldn't have minded it so much, but Kyle is pretty straight forward boy name.
  • @kyleec89 I took a summer A&P class with a girl named Kyle. I thought it was a bit strange but at least I could pronounce it while looking at it! I feel like androgynous names are really making a comeback, though most of them I prefer for girls (Quinn, Kai, Blake, etc).
  • @jenniferamcooper you can try the French variant Amelie, pronounced the same as Amalee
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • We are deciding between, Maize Langley or Madison Langley. Our sons are named Mason Laith and Myer Luke.
  • We found out we are having a girl and I'm going with the dreaded "Elliot" for a girl. I know it's hated. She will go by Ellie.
  • We finally settled on a girl's name! Riley Elizabeth.

Funny story though, I'm a dance teacher and I have a list of names to NEVER curse myself with, including Allison, Sophia, Adrian, and Tyler. I was speaking to one of my someone troublesome student's mother, who's name is Rillie (don't get me started on the spelling) and told her the baby name, to find out they are going to have the same middle name as well! I really need to start working on liking this child more, but her behavior has made leaps and bounds since the first week of September, so there is definitely hope.

Fiancé and I have decided to not announce our names to anyone until the baby is born though, because we've already gotten shitty comments about the names we've chosen with the few people we've told. I've also said to said people, I can't wait to tell our child that you hates the name we chose for them so much that they decided to judge it before meeting you! (My friends found this hilarious, we have that kind of relationship)
  • We are having a boy, and my BF is insisting on certain initials. The only name he has suggested was Dexter Oliver. (The initials is a family thing for him.) I'm stumped on any more "original" D names for a boy. Dexter is cute.. But I can't see myself introducing a Dexter to our families.
  • @MegJerKlemz

We'd tossed around the name Dean when we were first pregnant with DD and didn't know if it was a boy or girl. I also have a soft spot for Darwin and I know a really cute Drake IRL. Dexter makes me think of the show, not that your kid will really know about it but I can't help thinking of the show.

I love the name Oliver. I also love Oscar, Otis, Otto.
  • @MegJerKlemz Please tell me his initials won't be DOG? ;)

@MoMoWife Maybe you like Maisy? Very close to Maize and super cute!
  • @JadaBlue
No! It will be DOC, after his late father who passed last year. He's just so picky on names! I wanted a baby Henry! Lol
  • We are having a boy and are 97% sure we are naming him Miles. Maybe Miles Taylor.
  • @JadaBlue No! It will be DOC, after his late father who passed last year. He's just so picky on names! I wanted a baby Henry! Lol
Doc would be a cool nickname! Like the kid in the shining! :)
  • @yodiggity @AmadorRose A family name. My great-great-great-Grandmother.
  • Emma Kate! If it's a boy I have no clue. I feel like boy names are so much harder than girl names.
  • @MoMoWife not my kid, but I would strongly consider it as a mn or mix it up like PP said to be something like Maisey. As Spanish becomes more prevalent across the country, I personally wouldn't name my kid "corn." Then again, DH is Mexican so I'd get a worse side-eye.

And see, I feel like girl names are so so so much harder than boy names! There are so many more options for boys than girls IMO.
  • Apologies if this is lame of me since I had already brought my name choice up a while ago, but I'm starting to have second thoughts on the name Magnolia Dean nn Maggie/Lia for a girl.

I got what I interpreted as generally positive feedback on the boards, only that it was distinctly southern sounding.  DH is now totally on board with it (took him a little while) and my mom and sisters are obsessed with the name, but now I'm kind of getting afraid of it, like it might be too strong/bold of a name or something.  I'm also in no way southern (Alaska born Buffalonian), so that's throwing me off a little.

If I change it to Magnolia Laurel would that work in diffusing the southern feel a tiny bit or is that just too much of a mouthful?   Maybe I should just go back to the drawing board?   I really do love the name for many reasons, but I don't want my potential daughter to hate it or get side eyes.   Help please?

This also may have something to do with how I got my first negative reaction to it when I told it to my cousin the other day.  heh heh...   Can't tell if hormones are making me too sensitive or if new hesitation is valid...

I think it's the Magnolia that makes it sounds southern, so regardless of the middle name, it has that connotation. That said, I really like the name and the nn options. I don't really think you'll get much side-eye either way, except for maybe mn Dean in some places. (I think you said previously it was a family tradition? I might side-eye that a bit, but here in AZ it would be very uncommon.)

IMO, Magnolia Laurel sounds more southern. I think it is a pretty name, certainly not something I would side-eye.
