Flying during first trimester

Hello fellow parents. What do you all think about flying during the first trimester. I have a very long trip I have to go on while I'm in my 9th and 10th week. I'll be on a plane for 13 hours straight. Have any of you down in the past? Did you pack anything to prepare for it? I understand that it's medically safe to do this, however I wonder how it may effect/increase pregnancy symptoms. Any tips?

  • I flew to Europe around this point in my last pregnancy and it was fine. Not super comfortable, but transatlantic flights are pretty much never comfortable. I don't remember making any special preparations, but I would try to pack extra snacks, because they don't really feed you well on an airplane anymore. And anything that you think will make you be able to sleep more readily. Have fun!

  • I was on a 12 hour flight while pregnant with my daughter and have another coming up flying alone, pregnant with a 16 month old! I always take red eyes and get extra leg room so I can sleep through most of it. Plus I bring plenty of water so you don't have to keep asking for more as well as extra snacks.

I would! I'm going to a wedding in Scotland in March LOL :) just make sure you get up and change positions frequently.
  • ahhh I'll be flying around that time as well!! I haven't been able to meet with my OB yet to ask him but it's up there on my list. Unfortunately we pre-booked out seats and I'm at a window of course! LOL

  • I have you beat.  ;)  I have to fly to India at the beginning of next month.  I'll be 10 weeks and the flight will be really really long (I've made it before many times but not while pregnant...H is from India).  It will be about 28+ travel with a good chunk of that up in the air.  I'm bringing lots of water, lots of snacks and compression socks.  I pre-booked the window before finding out I'm pregnant so I'm going to try to call them and switch to the aisle if I can (or ask at check-in).   I'm also going to ask my Dr for tips in a few weeks when I see her and will let you know what I hear.
  • please do pass on the info @mkemommy !!! and FX the flight goes well!

  • Good Luck!  It is perfectly safe, I would just be sure to get up and move around every couple hours, drink plenty of liquids, and wear cozy pants.  Bummer we have to wear pants in public... Maybe a sundress (pending location) :-)

  • Yikes @mkemommy !  Please do let us know what the doc says!

I'm flying down to Argentina @nicknshan - it'll be Springtime so I could possibly get away with a sundress, however planes are always so damn cold!  Probably just end up in some yoga pants or something like that.
