38 week doc appointment??

I guess I'm mostly wondering what went on at everyone's 38 week checkup. Was cervix checked and all that. I just had mine and she didn't check any of that. No pelvic exam at all. Unfortunately, I don't get to chose who I see and I see a different doctor ever visit so I'm not sure what's normal or not.

Re: 38 week doc appointment??

  • I had mine today. She checked his heart rate and did a really quick ultrasound to ensure he's head down. Then she checked my cervix.

  • I have mine tomorrow but I see a midwife. I'm assuming the usual check heart rate, fundal height, and blood pressure.

I'm refusing any cervical checks till labor starts.
  • I'm 39 weeks, but last week it was pretty much the same routine as before; blood pressure, urine sample, heart rate, and fundal height. I told my Dr. I was still really nervous about the cervical check (haven't had any yet) so she didn't do one. They did do an ultrasound to make sure he's head down, but I still haven't dropped so idk if that's standard.
  • My 38 weeks appointment was yesterday and was also uneventful. Doctor checked heartbeat, measured my abdomen and manually felt my belly with her hands to check that baby's head was down. No cervical check or anything since I'm not having any symptoms at this point.

  • My doc wont check until 40 weeks. My 38 week appt will be thursday and I am assuming it will be business as usual. Fundal height, weight, bp abd heart rate.
  • I've been having cervical checks since 37 weeks because I've been having a lot of contractions.
  • I had my 37 week appt today and had a cervical check. But I think it was mostly to make sure that baby was head down. It's really uncomfortable and caused spotting and pain. If your doctor didn't feel the need to check, you're lucky. My ob is the type who wants every test done and every box checked.
  • I thought at 36 weeks they started cervical checks every week but I haven't had one since. I think she only did it then cuz she was already down there doing the group b strep swab. Every appointment since (37,38,39) has just been the same as before: blood pressure, fundal height and heartbeat check.
  • Thank you mommas!!! Knowing this appointment wasn't out of the ordinary is good. I'm active duty military so I don't get much choice in doctors and see a different one every appointment. They tend to do a little as possible and I'm just not sure what's "suppose" to happen and what's not.
  • My midwife checks my cervix every other week. I'm 37 weeks and no check today. She will check next week.

You can always request an exam if you'd like the information, but honestly, some women are 50%effaced with 2cm dilated and don't give birth for weeks, others will have high cervixes doing nothing and go into labor the next day. It's not a great indicator, especially for first time moms.
  • The last time my cervix was checked was my 36 week appointment. I'm 39 and some change now. At 38 they weighed me, took my blood pressure, measured my belly and found the heart beat. They asked last minute if I wanted to be checked but I didn't have time. Plus I didn't want to be disappointed if nothing had changed in two weeks. When I go Thursday for my 39-40 week I'm deffinetly getting checked. Unless my lo comes by then
  • Had my 38 week appointment today. Measured my tummy, listened to heartbeat, and then he checked my cervix. I would ask your doctor about it! Sometimes they don't check at all until you're in labor because some doctors feel it can increase a risk of infection. Sometimes they don't check until 39 or 40 weeks. Just ask what their policy is.
  • Hi, lurking from the sept 15 board, but looks like I'll be an October momma now. I'm 41wk 4 days and I've been 0 dialated and 50% thinned out for 4 weeks, they did start checking me at 38 weeks. Now I'd rather not have known. People are right that it's a crap shoot for FTM.
  • I believe you can ask to be checked! My office started asking if I wanted cervical checks at 36 weeks.
  • I had mine yesterday. Routine pee in a cup, blood pressure, weight, ect. She also did a cervical check (no change from last week :() and felt for baby's placement. She said he was head down but not engaged, which I think means he hasn't dropped. Also said she thinks he is already an 8 pounder but no ultra sound just feeling. I am 38 weeks today so hoping he comes earlier rather than later!
