2nd Trimester

Glucose testing...

Everytime I go to the doctor they test for glucose and protein in my urine (I know they do this with everyone) It's always tested negative for me so I'm just curious what is the difference in this and the Glucose tolerance test. I know you drink a nasty drink and wait an hour then they draw your blood. I guess my question is if you test negative for glucose in your urine can you still test positive in your blood? I know it seems like I post a lot of ridiculous questions but I am a first time mom and seem to be nervous about every little test they give me. lol. Any advice would be helpful. I'm scheduled for my Glucose Tolerance test on the 24th and not looking forward to it.

Re: Glucose testing...

  • I've always tested negative for glucose in my urine and I just had my test last week (I had mine early because of being overweight).  My blood test came back negative also.  Are you doing the one-hour or three-hour?  I did the one-hour and it was really fine.  Good luck!

  • I'm doing the one hour one. I just hope I keep it down. I've heard a lot of people have trouble keeping it down and I am still suffering from morning sickness.

  • a friend of mine took the glucose test and she took the 1 hour one and it came out positive and then she had to come back and do the 3 hour test. but she said that she always tested negative in her urine and then when it came time for the test she tested positive. so i guess it could happen

  • This is my second time taking the glucose test (i have mine on Thursday). When I had it with DS the drink just takes like flat sprite.  Nothing to be nervous about :)  But I guess some places are different, I'm not totally sure.

    Good Luck!

  • A lot of places have a few different flavors to choose from. I took the tests at about 5 weeks since being fat MUST bean I'm diabetic, I guess. I failed the 1 hour like many people do but passed the 3 hour. I'm taking the 3 hour again next Monday. Personally I think they should just make it standard to do the 3 hour and skin the 1 hour since so many people fail the 1 hour. I'd much rather just have to take one day/appointment to get it done than go in for one test, fail it, and have to go in again for a second.

Luckily this time they're skipping me right to the 3 hour. The drink I had the first time tasted just like Hawaiian Punch. It was pretty good, except it was warm. I pointed out that the bottle said "best served chilled" and they told me that the room they're stored in is kind of chilly so it should be fine. Yeah, if you store your drinks in your living room regularly!

  • Thanks so much! I think I'm really just nervous about the results and what will happen if I have GD.

  • I asked the medical assistant this at my appointment yesterday! She always says "your urine is fine," and I asked if that since my glucose levels are always normal in my urine, does that mean I have a good chance at not developing GD? She said "yes," so I was happy!

  • My urine tests at my midwife's office are always negative, but 2 of the 3 GD tests came back positive.
And honestly, the orange drink isn't that bad....it's like thick orange kool-aid or pop. And it's cold, so that helps.

    Good luck :)

  • I have always tested negative for glucose in my urine and I just found out I have gestational diabetes yesterday after failing both the one hour and three hour tests. I have no risk factors other than being advanced maternal age, so they tested me early at 20 weeks. Honestly, it's not as horrible as you think it is. I meet with the dietician today to go over a diet plan, and will check my blood sugar 4 times daily. If it's not controlled by diet and exercise, then I will start on insulin. I am trying to look at it as glass half full, that this is easily controlled and my baby and I are both healthy in every other way, which is more than a lot of others have. I am grateful that this can be controlled, and with control is a likelihood of a healthy outcome.

The drink I had last time was fine. It was like watered down Tang. Waited an hour, they drew blood. My mistake was not eating immediately afterward. I went grocery shopping and started shaking and sweating and had to sit down. Luckily, DH was with me and he got me a Sprite and some nasty BBQ chips but  it did the trick!

It really is no big deal, but I, too, was anxious about going when I was pregnant with my first. Good luck!

  • I couldn't do the traditional GTT so they just had me check my sugars to determine my diagnosis.  I do have GD. I have never tested positive for glucose or protein in my urine.  My understanding is you only test positive for glucose in your urine if your GD is pretty out of control, but I'm not an expert so I'm not sure that my take on it is completely correct.
