Moms who have breastfed 2 babies (or more)...

I breastfed my toddler son until I was 18 weeks pregnant with this LO and wondering if it will hurt as bad starting out with this new baby? I know it shouldn't hurt if baby has the correct latch, but it took some time, soreness, and some bleeding nipples to get it perfected with my son. He nursed until he was 2, so we had a great experience overall.

Moms who have nursed 2+ babies, did you find breastfeeding easier the second (or third) time around??

Re: Moms who have breastfed 2 babies (or more)...

  • No. In fact, it was harder with my second than my first. She was more aggressive and it was painful for a while before we got the latch together. What was easier was how I felt towards it. I knew to be patient with the process. I wasn't worried about what I was doing like my first, just knew it was a matter of time before we figured out our nursing pattern. Each child is different and so each nursing experience is different.

  • It was not easier or less painful for me, but like the previous poster said, knowing what to expect made it mentally easier to deal with.

Every kid is different and will have different ups and downs with feeding and latching and all that fun stuff.
  • I don't remember it being harder, but I remember it being just as difficult in the beginning.  Not that I had a lot of issues, but I am always a little sore at the beginning.  It did help that I had the confidence that I had done this before and I knew I could do it again.  It was about a year between when I stopped BF my first and started again with my second.

  • My first time breastfeeding my oldest was the hardest! I couldn't get the latch right and ended up with badly tore up nipples. I ended up getting help from a lactation consultant and she suggested using a nipple guard until I healed. After healing it was fine, and I ended up nursing him until he was 2 years old. My second son was a breeze! No sore bleeding nipples at all. That was 3 years after my first son. Each baby is different, but knowing what to do made it easier the second time around.
  • My second time was way easier. You still have to go through the sore period but you know what a good latch is so you can avoid bleeding and sores.
  • So I haven't had my second yet, but my MIL suggested I start using lanolin cream before showering a couple weeks before my due date. We'll see if it works!
