9 week u/s couldn't see baby

So today I went for my first ultrasound and from my lmp I should be 9 weeks 1day.. I had a regular u/s done and a vaginal one. All they could see was the sac and a small smudge in it. The u/s tech told me that she can't say much but she said she isn't seeing what she should typically see given how far along I am. Than she told me if I have cramping and bleeding I should go to emergency! I was so confused.. I haven't bled or cramped at all and I am having terrible m/s... I also have my first prenatal check up on Monday and they will also go over my u/s results with me. Has anyone been in this situation and it didn't end up bad? Please let me know. --Thanks ❤️

That does not sound promising. I think it's terrible that they are making you wait until Monday to talk to a doctor.

Do you know when you ovulated? And when did you get your BFP. Its possible that you ovulated late... Hugs and im sorry you are in this position.

This sounds much too familiar to me-- I had a blighted ovum last year. Granted, not even a smudge in my case, so that could be something! I agree with what others said, and I hope for the best.

I agree that it doesn't sound good. If it would help you get through the weekend, I would not feel back about calling the doc on call in your practice (if there is one).

Those were my thoughts. LMP is not accurate unless you have perfect 28 days cycles with 14 day LPs.

I called the doctors and they said that my ultrasound results won't be there until Monday.. And no I have no idea when I ovulated but I have regular periods and I got a positive three days after my period was late.

Maybe you did ovulate late. In my SILs case, they thought she was 10-11 weeks according to her LMP but when they did her US, she was only 6 weeks or so for how big the baby was. She unfortunately had a MC (but I believe for other health reasons). I hope you hear good new Monday! Best wishes!

If you used one of those early pregnancy test you could have really been 6 days earlier than missed period rather than 3 days late.

I had a blighted ovum (empty sac) in April at just over 8 weeks and had a D&C the following week. Seems unusual that you would have to wait so long to speak to a doctor about the results. It is possible that you ovulated later than you thought and aren't nearly as far along as you think, which is entirely possible. Hoping for good news for you!

I'm sorry to say the same thing happened to me. It's confusing and people give you false hope. Read up on blighted ovum. It's most likely what you're experiencing. You'll be refered to an early loss clinic and you'll be given a couple options to miscarry. Since you haven't already (I didn't either) it's called a 'missed miscarriage'. Just warning just because there isn't a fetus doesn't make the miscarriage just a heavy period like people say. You will see tissue and clots. I would recommend a d&c if you can,.. The process took me 3 long days to complete naturally.

Regardless of when you ovulated or when you conceived the sac wouldn't be empty or be a small smudge. I was sent back for bloodwork and my hcg levels kept increasing and I kept being sent for ultrasounds to see if for some chance something started growing.... Which was horrible in my opinion it was clear what was happening. Don't get false hope and get it all over with quick so you can get back to trying.

As PP said, it sounds consistent with a blighted ovum. Prepare for it, but it's ok to be optimistic! I opted for a D&C after discussing it with my provider, and I'm glad I did. It was more difficult emotionally than physically, and experienced bloating and some mild abdominal cramping. I was able to go to work the day after the procedure. Again, hoping for the best for you.

Was the gestational sac measuring 9 weeks?

As a sonographer I unfortunately see this smudge often. Having not seen the images I will say within a blighted ovum there is not generally a smudge visible. Normal fetal tissue is very echogenic (bright) but as the tissue starts to break down it becomes less and less so creating a much darker reflection. When I see this it is usually a missed miscarriage and the patient has no idea as she's had no symptoms yet. We usually have patients come back a week later for a rescan just because the dr prefers for things to progress naturally.
I have had patients come back and I find a fetal pole but that would be with a gestational sac measuring around 6 weeks not 9 weeks. So if your dates are off this could still possible.

I had the same experience. I did see a fetal pole and yolk sac but continued to measure way behind and eventually couldn't see a heartbeat. I went crazy during the wait looking for others stories. I found that there were an equal number of people that had positive and negative outcomes. Unfortunately mine was not good, that doesn't mean you should give up hope. Good luck

I'm in the same boat but I thought I was 7.1 weeks and really measured closer to 5-5.5 . Waiting on results of hcg test today . And then going for a follow up scan hopefully next week . Praying for you that it's goes well and your dates were just really off !

So unfortunately I was told today that they did see a fetal pole with an unusually large yolk sac.. There was no heartbeat and they estimated that the baby passed away at 8 weeks 4 days. So I will be getting a prescription to help start the process of a miscarriage. Thanks for all the support everyone ❤️

I'm so sorry for your lost. I had a loss in May right around mothers day that killed me. I'm currently 6 weeks and one day now and I have an ultrasound next week. I'm terrified that there will be no heartbeat and that I'll lose this one too. My prayers are with you.

I'm in the same situation. it is so incredibly hard to be excited for this new pregnancy and still rationalize this could be not a viable pregnancy. even though I feel totally different and having tons of "normal" symptoms I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic. good luck to you
