Still nursing?

anyone out there still nursing an older child? I think i'm going to begin weaning my 18 mo becuase it hurts now!

Re: Still nursing?

  • Yep! There are quite a few of us nursing toddlers here. My DS is nearly 18mo and still nursing a few times a day (we had been down to one for about a month...then he got sick and picked up more feedings).

These two threads are from earlier-- you might want to read over the responses and continue these conversations as many people are in the stage of figuring out how and when to wean. We've also discussed a few of the not-so-fun symptoms like soreness and cramping.

  • Yes I am still nursing my 13 mo old. We have weaned down to only during the night but I am ready for her to be completely done! Doctor told me to have her weaned by 20 weeks so I still have a couple months to go.
  • I was nursing until a couple weeks ago, my (almost) 15 month old (then) self-weaned. We were down to 2-3x/day when I found out I was pregnant, then just in the evening when we completely stopped. He was ready, it was fairly painless. Good luck to you! (There is an earlier thread about this if you search!)

  • Yeah. My daughter is 25 months and does NOT want to wean. Though I am trying.

  • Yes 25 month old...
  • Yes, a 22 month old who doesn't want to wean and would nurse all day long if I let him
  • I'm still nursing my almost 19 month old several times a day and many times at night.

    He never wants to unattach!
  • I'm nursing my 14 month old right now! No weaning in sight, I'm preparing to tandem nurse.
  • I'm still nursing my 25 month old still. I hadn't intended to nurse him this long but he loves it so we've kept it up. Weaning doesn't seem to be in the cards any time soon.
  • My 13 month old little cutie hasn't noticed any change in milk taste that I can see, and so far, I haven't had any discomfort. With my last pregnancy (Mimi), I was hoping to tandem nurse her and her sister (Birdie), but Birdie ended up weaning herself at 16 months (two months before Mimi came).

Again, my goal this time is to be able to tandem nurse Mimi and the new little one. :)

  • Yes, still nursing my 2.5 year old! She won't give up the boo or and I don't have the heart to just 'take it away'. She HAS slowed down a lot this year thank goodness. It's mainly comfort and a sleep inducer for her. But now that I'm pregnant she's gotten clingy and whiney about it and generally anything I reprimand her about. Sigh! This too shall pass...hopefully lol.
  • Still nursing my (almost) 15 month old. My nipples are so sore right now that I wish she would at least slow down. I feel like she nurses more now than ever. I HAVE to night wean her soon because it is getting to be too much and really don't want to deal with nursing a newborn all night and a toddler through the night as well. There has to be hope, right?!! :)

I weaned my daughter at 19 months the month before I got pregnant. I weaned her so that we would have a better shot at conceiving (long story; won't bore you with details). She was a total boob monster and would breastfeed all day and night if I let her.

I tried weaning her for months with no success. I read somewhere that to put bandages on your nipples and tell them you have a boo boo (or whatever you say) and they won't want to breastfeed. Worked like a charm for my daughter. She'd give me a hug, kisses, and pats whenever she went to feed and saw the band aids. Just an idea for someone else struggling to wean.

  • Def trying the bandaid trick. Thanks! I was planning on using lemon juice but band aids seem much more humane ;;)

It took about 2 weeks for her stop attempting to nurse. It worked so well. I still can't believe it was that easy for us. Good luck!
