Confused...

Re: Confused...

  • I have had maybe 2 deli meat sandwiches this pregnancy and I ate them the same day I bought the meat. I usually make hot (grilled) ham and cheese if I crave it. I would never go to anyplace that has their stuff sitting out like subway, wawa, or order out for a hoagie. The risk I feel is way higher b/c they sit out until they are used. I also pretty much avoid everything on the actual no no list just to be safe. Nothing is full proof but if they say those things are the highest risk why even take a chance is my motto.

You are not supposed to eat lunchmeat, hot dogs or soft cheeses because of Listeria. My doctor recommended not even taking the chance if heated really well. There are also nitriates in both lunchmeat and hot dogs which aren't healthy for baby either. She also said no sushi, and raw sprouts. I didn't ask to why because I don't eat but imagine it has to do with bacteria as well.
  • I've eaten deli meat my whole life and never had listeria (or from anything else). Your chance of getting it doesn't go up simply bc you are pregnant. It's not something I eat regularly but I don't avoid it. If you are concerned about where it comes from, don't eat it, or you can heat it up. But I think it's a personal decision for each woman as to what to avoid or eat. I personally follow my instincts and they have lead me to build and birth 2 completely healthy children so I trust my mothering instincts. There's no sense in trying to shame another woman for making different choices than you. We all have different bodies, different tolerances, and different babies.

  • No matter what type body or tolernces you have you still can get food poisioning. The doctors warn against it. I have 3 children over 17 years and had different doctors. They all said not to eat it from 1996 till 2015. Its not sonething new or old. Listetia bacteria has been proven to kill an unborn fetus. It just gives us stomache cramps and diarrhea. To me itself it's not worth taking the chance.
  • To each their own is basically what's going to happen here. There's no reason to start an argument over it. I got food poisoning at 5 months with my 1st child and he's now a healthy 11 year old. Yes, there are definitely risks anytime you eat anything. Some women completely avoid the no no list, some don't. At the end of the day every woman isn't doing something that they think is going to downright harm their child or their self (I hope lol). :)

I have a friend who lost her baby to listeria. She won't forgive herself. It surprises me how many women shrug off the advice to stay away from deli meat (unless heated). In my opinion, better safe than sorry.

I'm sorry for your friends loss. I'm also a "rule follower" in the no no department. I just figure if they tell you no there's probably a good reason. I hate hearing the whole "listeria is so rare" comment. It's actually pretty common these days. But I'm like you, better safe than sorry for sure!
I also have a friend who lost her baby due to listeria. Late miscarriage at 16 weeks. I'm a rule follower as well. If it says no, I'm not eating it.

Also, my doctor didn't "give me a list" of no-no foods. I think in this day, doctors just assume you will google everything and look it up yourself. I have a go-to list in one of my AppStore I refer to constantly
