Has anyone experienced two early miscarriages and then a referral to a fertility specialist?

Hi ladies,

My husband and I have been TTC our first for about a year now. We have experienced two early losses during that time (one at about 6 weeks, one at about 5). I've had all my levels checked, vaginal and pelvic ultrasounds, and nothing is coming up "off." I am extremely disheartened and frustrated at this point, but am being referred to a reproductive endocrinologist to try to further figure out what's not working. I know plenty of people who've had success with fertility treatments and IVF, but it seemed like their initial issue was not getting pregnant. I can get pregnant, but I can't stay pregnant, so I don't know what to expect from this. Any one out there have a similar story who might be able to give me some (hopeful) insight? Thank you!

Hi - im very sorry for your losses. I'm in a very similar boat. I had a blighted ovum diagnosed at 8 weeks and a second loss quit growing at 6w1d. I seem to get pregnant easily (3rd cycle both times) but like you cannot stay pregnant. I have an appointment with an RE for November 12th. The only difference is my OB diagnosed me with a septate uterus so we know that is probably contributing to the problem, but she doesn't do the surgery required to fix it.

When you say vaginal and pelvic ultrasounds - did you have either a saline infused ultrasound or an HSG? They can detect structural issues not seen with regular transvagibal ultrasound. My uterus looked normal until they did an SIS and found my septum.

I have a similar story to you ladies. Had two miscarriages (see signature) and was referred by my OB to an RE here in the area. Initial appointment was DH and I sitting down with the Nurse and answering her questions and talking through a plan of action. Then we did an initial blood work workup; FSH, AMH, Progesterone levels, egg quality/numbers, HSG. Everything looked normal - all the levels were good and they weren't concerned really. The RE perscribed me Clomid with a trigger shot to induce ovulation. Which I did for two months - BFNs both times. Then I found out that insurance wasn't covering any of my visits because "infertility treatments aren't medically necessary to have a child" so we are on a financial break from any help. But I have been using fertility friend and temping/charting to help me understand my cycles more and when I ovulate etc. I would highly recommend two things: 1.) use fertility friend if you're not already 2.) check with your medical insurance company BEFORE doing any testing with a reproductive endocrinologist.

I would deffinitely have your doctor do a progesterone level test and see where that is. Your story sounds kind of similar to mine so you might be lacking progesterone. Talk to your doctor and don't be afraid to ask questions.

I had a MMC/D&E and a chemical pregnancy. The doctor said chemical pregnancies are so common, it isn't an indication of a problem. If I have a second MMC, he will test the embryo, but for now he sees no reason for me to see an RE. I'm curious about what @smfeuro said about bloodwork being able to tell you about egg quality, though. I'm 37, so I worry that my old eggs are the problem. But if insurance doesn't cover it, I'll just try to get pregnant a third time and hope for the best.

I'm the rare one, so this is a cautionary tale only. I had two early losses in 1 year. I was referred to an RE who recommended IVF. I declined since we were "unexplained", conceiving naturally and in our early 30's. 7 years later (3 more pg losses - one that almost killed me), I bowed my head and found a 4th RE (3rd clinic) who did additional testing, optimized our chances (surgery for me; RX for DH) had state of the art lab and procedures... and our family grew. I am sorry for your losses; I hope your story is resolved the way I wanted mine to be: try, try again = success. If you've had RPL testing and it was normal and you have the time and patience odds are that success is around the corner. FX.

Yes, have them check your progesterone levels. I just miscarried on September 15th. And I already have pills ready to go for my first cycle.

I did not have the saline infused ultrasounds-- I just had a vaginal and pelvic without any saline. Perhaps that is something I will do with the RE? Not sure...

In terms of insurance, I am calling mine on Monday (tomorrow) before moving forward with the RE. The cost of all of this is definitely an added stress. Here's hoping they'll cover some of it.

When I was about 4 weeks 3 days with this last pregnancy, my OBGYN checked my progesterone level and it came back at 21. She said this was rather good because 5-25 is considered baseline. She put me on a low dose of progesterone (100mg) just in case, but that didn't help anything stick...
