Baby at church

So we have not gotten our son baptized yet and everyone keeps asking when we plan on doing it. Both my husband and I grew up Catholic but we are not active in any church and don't follow all of the Catholic "rules". His side of the family is very actively religious but he is not and my side hasn't asked any questions yet. I am wanting to wait to take our son to church and get his baptized and everything when he is old enough to actually understand what is going on. I say a prayer with him every night now but I don't think taking a 6 month old to church is something we want to try. I know this is a touchy subject but I am just wondering what others have done in the past with this. No judgement please...

I am actually in the exact same boat. I was raised Catholic but besides going to Easter and Christmas Mass, we weren't very active at all. My husband wasn't raised in the church but shares similar beliefs as myself and we are not active in any church. My side of the family is Mexican-American/Catholic and getting the baby baptized  his just one of those things you do. I currently say a little prayer with him every night and I just ordered him a Golden Children's Bible, the same one I had as a child. I think I am in the mindset of making that decision when he is a little older and can understand the steps and the meaning behind it.

  • We just recently brought our son to Mass for the first time.  I'm not terribly active in the Church and I disagree with a lot of parts of it.  Still, I loved growing up with all the traditions and going to Mass as a family and I want my son to have that experience.  I figure I'll talk about the more problematic aspects of it as he grows up and encourage him to decide for himself.  If he decides he wants to be Catholic, at least he'll have the foundation but I'm okay if he decides not to at a certain point.  Plus, it was actually really fun, dressing him up and everyone cooing over him.  He did super well, too!  The only noise he made was to laugh or talk.  I'm also really looking forward to the Baptism to bring the whole family together.
  • We were back at church when LO was 5 days old, lol. Our (huge) church has a nursery but I haven't taken her yet, I wear her and she usually sleeps through most of it. Sometimes I end up pacing in the back of the church with her, but I don't have to miss the service. We don't baptize babies, but it's important to us for our kids to grow up in the church.

  • I, too, attend a church regularly, but we do not baptize babies (I don't think this forum is the place to explain all the theological reasons, but basically we like to have an understanding prior to baptism). I also leave my LO in the nursery, but I volunteer there myself and know all the women there. I think it is just a personal preference. If you don't feel comfortable doing it or feel like a six month old would not be able to sit through a service (or mass) quietly, then that is up to you. I know my daughter would freak out if I had to sit quietly with her for 90 minutes, unless it was nap time.

We christened our son at five months old. My husband was raised Catholic and I Protestant, and while we both identify ourselves as Christians we do not attend church. With that said, we do have family members who are quite religious and we intend to raise our son with Christian values. For that reason we opted for a non-denominational service. It was actually very similar to our wedding where we invited our closest family and friends and went for brunch afterwards. Everyone was happy with that and I am really glad we did it this way. If you don't want to bind your LO to any particular faith until he's old enough to understand, perhaps a naming ceremony might appease all parties?
  • Thanks guys! It's nice to know we're not alone out there. I do like the naming ceremony idea. I will look into that!

  • It's never too early to indoctrinate your children, but go with your gut. I just wouldn't want, like, a one year old running around without at least a little religious training.
For Sure!   It's important to educate them.  What if they're called into ministry as toddlers?    Absolutely bring them to services!

  • I prefer to apply myself to the religion of kindness and nature. This whole church thing and the people being rude to each other, yes all of them, is why religion has hurt us. If we all embrace love and each other, we'd be much happier. And the sparkly unicorn woman has a lot of wisdom to share so why shouldn't she be allowed to share that? It's not rude. You're rude.
