Induction by breaking waters?

I'm hoping a few of you wise women might be able to give me some feedback. I'm 41 weeks tomorrow and my doctor would like to induce me tomorrow. She says that conditions are favorable to start with breaking my water first as opposed to starting me on Pitocin right away. The idea sounds great to me since I want to avoid Pitocin. I was just wondering if breaking my water alone will be effective in starting the labor process. Any thoughts?

Re: Induction by breaking waters?

  • My mom had 4 inductions. She told me to just ask them to break you water and it can definitely get things going without poticin. I think it's pretty common.

  • It can be but it doesn't work for everyone. I was 3cm dilated 90% effaced, I had my water broken but didn't progress at all without pitocin.

It worked for me.  I was having contractions that were getting more regular for a few days and almost went in the day before my induction.  My OB was trying to avoid pitocin as well.  It kick started and I never needed it, labor picked up and DS2 was born with 5 hours. 3-4 cm and 75% for reference.

  • Waters breaking doesn't always help you dialate but it can. It's worth a shot to avoid Pitocin! My waters broke with my first long before contractions started so it didn't help my labor at all. But this time my nurse checked me, I was 8.5 cm. then my waters burst (I think from the cervical check) and as soon as the waters broke I was at 10 and pushing (like two minutes later). So it can help. Having said that, I would personally choose to go closer to 42 weeks without any interventions.
  • Only caveat is that baby needs to be fully engaged first which I assume is true because your doc said conditions are favorable. If baby is not engaged breaking water can cause complications

  • Good points everyone. Thanks! I have a lot to think about I guess.
  • I was having contractions but they were not strong enough to do anything. They decided to induce but start by breaking my water. My baby girl was born 1 hr and 20 min later. I never needed any other medication.
