Anyone else's pet(s) sense a change?

I swear my dog knew I was pregnant before I did.  Both times ;)

He always sleeps on the bed with us, but the past couple of weeks he sleeps snuggled by my legs with his head on my knees.  If I get up to pee he is right behind me and very protective.  Its very cute.

Anyone else notice a change in their "furry babies"?

Re: Anyone else's pet(s) sense a change?

  • With my son, I only tested because my cat was super clingy (very out of character) and would get really mad if I left the room etc. Then he started kneading my stomach and head butting me and my first thought was those dogs who can smell cancer and, since my mom had just had a double ooferectomy due to suspicious masses on her ovaries, I freaked out! It was the middle of a snow storm and I demanded my husband go to CVS to get a pregnancy test because I would so rather the cramps and bloating be due to a bun in the oven!

Now, almost two and a half years later and we have an awesome son and a new cat (RIP Reggie :(( ) and this kitten just started gnawing on my feet the day we got the BFP. I'm going to pretend it is a cute way of her acknowledging the pregnancy and not just naughty behavior.

  • Nope. None of my 4 cats are acting any differently.

  • Not yet! I'm interested to see how my dog will react to a baby...he wasn't around when my DDs were babes!
  • My cat is SUPER clingy. She's usually pretty affectionate but this is ridiculous. She follows me everywhere and keeps wanting to sleep RIGHT ON MY PELVIS! Ouch with those super little sharp feet!
  • my puppy won't leave me alone (very cute but also very annoying when she's a 30 kg Labrador and I can't take 2 steps without her being there).. she is a lot more gentle with me and sniffing at me more... and when she gets in trouble she rolls over straight away for me but for DH she's a little more rebelious

  • Yes! Usually my dog is a Daddy's boy, but he has been cuddling me like crazy lately-- he did the same thing when I was pregnant with our son.
  • No, but I hope he will! I could go for some extra puppy cuddles!
  • That's funny -- I have 4 cats (2 of them are twin brothers) and I SWEAR one of the twins can sense it. But he's not all cuddles and head butts; he's ANGRY at me! He won't come to the door when I come home (he has always done that). He sulks in my office at home, under my desk. He kinda looks at me funny, and then walks away. So he does notice, but man is he pissed!

    (5 weeks today!)
  • When I was pregnant with my so , my dog would always put his head on my belly. I have a picture of it on his room.. It's so amazing!!

  • Yes! Both of my dogs suddenly didn't want to sleep just close to me, but right against me or on top of me. My older dog is also afraid of baths, so whenever I take one she stays out of the bathroom, but ever since I've been pregnant she actually comes in and lays right next to the tub :x

  • Yes! My dog has become ultra protective over me. She used to be super clingy to my husband and now if a "stranger is in the house she will only listen to me. She also follows me around everywhere I go and gets super upset when I leave the house.
  • I was wondering this. I have 2 dogs. My younger male last night was super mushy and close to me in bed. He had to have his head on my belly a few times. I got the worse nights sleep.
  • Yes my girl cat began being really snuggly and would lay on my stomach. I had a feeling once she started doing that since she did that when I was pregnant with the twins! It's amazing how they know!

  • I have 4 dogs, and two of them are medium with the bad habit of jumping up...since being pregnant, they've both stopped jumping on me and have become super gentle and cuddly! (Not that they were rough, but they just seem extra cautious.)
  • Yes! My 75 lb dog is now obsessed with trying to get into my lap (well, more than normal anyway) and my other dog (luckily only 52 lbs) loves to butt her head up against my stomach.

Absolutely. With DS, my two docile bassets started guarding me, to the point they'd fight with each other. Now we're a one-dog family, and he's still following me everywhere and laying his head in my lap whenever he can.

Quick story: I swear my Sally basset (RIP) knew I was going into labor before it happened. She woke me up at midnight to go outside—something she NEVER did. She jumped up on the side of the bed and literally pushed my arm with her paw to wake me up. I let her out, went to the bathroom myself, and my water broke on the toilet. Less than 12 hours later, DS was born!

    They definitely know :-)

  • We don't have pets, but we went to a friend's house the other night and both of her cats (neither of whom are normally cuddlers) both came over to me and sat in my lap, and one of them kept head butting me.  All I could think was that they totally know I'm pregnant.  Thankfully no one else guessed.
  • Our (girl) cat is just staring at me a lot. Not sure if it means anything, but its pretty cute. She is not a cuddler, so if she starts curling up with me Ill know something is up!

  • My dog used to jump up on me all the time but hasn't at all since even before we found out. I've noticed in general he's being a lot more gentle with me. He likes to sit with me a lot more now too.
  • My male dog has been more cuddly lately. He's also taken to sleeping on my feet. He became clingy with my DD as well, but when I was further along. Our female dog couldn't give two shits....lol. Still jumps directly on my stomach when I lay on the couch. She's a ditz though anyways!

  • Yes! Both of my dogs are all over me lately, they've gotten extra snuggly, sleeping on or next to me as much as possible. Right now I'm squished between the two of them! I think DH is a lil jealous... :)
  • My three JRTs have always been mama's boys but they've been even more attentive, lovey, and snuggly. They take turns wanting to rest their heads on my stomach and can't get close enough to me. I'm pretty sure they know something is up. :x
  • My dog is pretty much acting same as always.

  • I was just telling my husband that i think my cat knows. Shes been very clingy and wants to be on me all the time. Usually shes just happy with being near me. When i was pregnant with my daughter she knew too and was very clingy then too, that was 3 1/2 years ago
  • My dog is completely normal - still pounces on me, still begs for treats, he's completely clueless. I hope the baby doesn't come as too much of a shock to him. ;)
  • I had a feeling I was pg with my DD, but knew something was up when my dog couldn't get close enough to me and was always smelling my breath.
  • My cat won't love on me. He switches to my husband.

  • Yes! I have a four year old Maltese. She has always been protective and tends to stay close to me, but for the last two weeks she bites at anyone who tries to touch me if we're laying in bed. It cracks me up. DH doesn't care for it at all. She has moved from sleeping between me and DH to sleeping right up against my leg. :)
  • Cat has always been something of an attention whore. Now he is a lot more whiney and clingy. He normally would crawl into bed with me for a few minutes for some lovies but then vacate back to daddy. Now he is spending most of the night with me laying across my belly. I definitely think he knows something's up
  • I think my male cat has been slightly more clingy, and stares at me a lot, but that could be in my head.

I know for a fact the girl cat doesn't give a furry rat's ass. She's all about DH, that little jerk.

  • 6 weeks and my pup has been nosing my butt when i walk like "whats going on mama." And the cat has bee clawing at me for the past 2 weeks or so at night around 3:30am EVERYDAY!
  • I have 3 dogs and I am convinced that one of them knows.  He's acting different. I'm not sure about the other two.
  • Our youngest dog has been stuck to me like glue and keeps sniffing my belly...even before I took a test. Our oldest dog keeps giving me the side eye and hasn't come near me like she's being replaced. The cat is indifferent because...well...he's just an old grumpy cat.
  • Before I knew, the cat I've had the longest (13 years) started sleeping with me (she never would before because she doesn't like that the dogs sleep with us) and bringing me socks! Multiple times a day, she'd start meowing and would bring me a sock in her mouth. She's brought me "presents" before, but never like this! Once I found out, she stopped. I think she was trying to tell me.
  • My little dog who we have had for 6 years refuses to cuddle with me and knew before I did!!!! She refuses to leave my side and always has to snuggle next to my belly
    Due May 10th!
  • One of my cats has suddenly become very interested in sitting on my lap. He will jump on our bed and bypass DH to come over to my side and lay on me. He really doesn't care much for my DH right now unless my husband is sitting right beside me. He's a fluffy Mainecoon so in the winter he should keep me pretty warm!
  • Haha yes my dog notices a change for sure. Shell sit near me and then smell my boobs, like i have a different smell or something.
  • We have two dogs, one is clueless and the other is showing signs of knowing something is up just like last time. Our dogs sleep on the floor in our room. With DS one of them randomly started jumping into bed dozens of times a night and we were getting so frustrated with it. It finally dawned on us that it could have been related so we let her sleep by my feet and everyone got more rest! Once DS was born she stopped on her own, but now sleeps by his crib sometimes and goes to check on him. After my BFP she has started hopping into bed again! I find it really sweet. :)
