Snotsucker

Question for STM+

Do you guys actually use this straw thing to suck snot out of your kids nose?! This sounds and looks like the absolutely most disgusting thing I have ever seen. I know saline drops and a nasal aspirator may not do the best job ever, but I can't imagine physically sucking my kids snot thru a "straw"! Even my hubby, who has a 5yo he took care of since he was a newborn was repulsed by this idea.

Re: Snotsucker

  • Are you referring to the nosefrida? If so yes I loved I twitch my first and even sent one to my SIL who is expecting her first in December. That little gadget gif more man sized boogers out of my tiny baby then I ever thought possible.

If your child has reflux like mine it is a godsend he had reflux come out his nose daily so we used the nasal saline spray and the nosefrida to keep him clean, clear and comfy. You just can't think about it too hard when you use it.

  • Looks gross, but I'm sure it's very effective. FTM here so no advice. If I think baby would benefit from it, I might try it. Just maybe not in public, haha.

Not in public! Haha!!! People without children would think you were insane!
  • The Nose Frida is amazing. The mucus never touches your mouth, there is a filter in place to prevent this. You will get things out you would never get out with a regular bulb. Nose Frida + saline = wonderful congestion relief.

Although if your kid ends up being like mine, he/she will lose his/her mind when you use it like you are killing him/her.
Oh yeah lots of crying but you can hear is so clearly when they aren't stopped up.
  • I'm actually really curious to see how this thread turns out. I got one as a gift and I was so grossed out I returned it, thinking that the bulb things have been working for years and years and years. Now I'm anxious to see from you experienced mamas if I should go back and get it.
  • Knowing how full of boogers my own nose gets, I'm sure I'm gonna need this. It looks so gross, but I hear we mommas will do plenty of weird and gross things for the sake appeasing an unhappy child... This will just be yet another thing.
  • Seriously, nosefreda is the most amazing thing ever. I usually gag while doing it, but it clears all the snot out easily and effectively. The old school bulb, electric one and other ones do not work as well!! I say but one keep it on hand, I promise you the first time your sweet baby is so stuffed up and gagging because of snot you will use it and change your mind.

We are definitely getting a nosefreda. My sister uses it on my niece and it works wonders. I would NEVER use one of the bulbs. They can actually grow mold inside of them. There was an article in Huffpost about it, complete with pics.

  • The nose freda is seriously the best thing ever!
It might look gross but it works so much better than those bulb syringes.
My husband couldn't handle it though. He gagged every time he used it. It was worth the price watching that alone :)

Totally go back and get it. Those bulbs harbor mold and don't work nearly as well. It looks weird but is worth it.

I registered for the nosefrida and my cousin bought it for me instantly. Every mama I know swears by it.
  • DH got one when DS was tiny and it grossed me out! If he was ever really stuffy with a cold (usually in the middle of the night) I would hold DS and hubby would suck. It's gross - there's no escaping that - but it's a really quick and effective way to clear baby's nasal passage. And when your baby is struggling to breathe normally you really don't care about how gross it is.
As PP said, the baby will react like you are torturing them, but only for a few seconds, then it's instantly much better.
  • Never tried it, but I know my SIL got one b/c it was recommended to her by friends, and she swears by it.  Still kinda grosses me out, I may get one but..... ew.

It's completely gross and gag worthy, but still amazing to have and use. It's seriously the best worst baby gadget ever!

They weren't around with my first, but would have been incredibly helpful. It does gross me out, but very little of child rearing in the infant stage isn't kind of gross.

Funny story - DD had her first terrible cold and stuffy nose. I used a bulb syringe and saline drops. I needed my mom to watch her for a bit and planned to clean her out one last time before I left her. Mom told me she'd done it a million times and to let her do it. I did. I watched her stick the bulb syringe inside DD's nose and THEN squeeze. DD's eyes went wide and she didn't stop screaming for at least 20 minutes. Yeah mom, you knew what you were doing 20yrs ago but I think you're hazy on the details at this point. Smh.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

    Poor baby!
  • I just saw an electronic snot sucker at CVS,
Wondering if it might work the same way without having to put my mouth on it... I totally think the nose frida is a great idea, but the idea of using my mouth is a bit skeevy still...

No it's not the same or worth the money!
  • It is definitely amazing. DH refuses to use it after seeing what I can get out of DS's nose.
He thinks DS does a great job blowing his nose, but I always go and use the snot sucker afterwards, and there is always lots left to suck out.
He sleeps so much better after a good snot sucking.

He would freak out when he was younger and able to fight, but now he lets me use it without putting up a fight.

  • It is definitely gross but one of the best inventions ever! My DD runs away when I pull it out. I know it makes her feel better though. My DH thinks it's disgusting. He refuses to use it.
  • It's the best. My husband thinks it's gross, but Omg it's amazing!
  • Love the nose Freda. I guess I am weird be as I don't think it is gross at all. There is a filter and it works. How is that gross?

    Damn...
  • I registered for one and got it at my baby shower this last weekend. My cousin said its amazing and that she's gone through 3 of them, I am curious to try it now. Hey, whatever works!

  • The thought sickened me also, but once you have a very sick baby who won't nurse you are willing to do anything. Ped recommended the noefrieda and I also love it. Nothing ahs ever came through.
  • I also love it! It really works and honestly it's not even bad ... There's a filter... Just bought 2 extra for my twins :)
  • I used a hydrasense (basically the same thing) and it was a Godsend! DD fought it was crazy and sounded like I was killing her but then she could breath so it was worth it.

  • To the lady who saod the thing about mold getting in the bulbs i think theyre changing the way they make them. I ordered a care kit i think it was safety first and the items looked updated from the original ones my bulb actually comes apart into two piece i can turn it inside out and clean it. That being said i think ill be ordering one of these nose frida things for when baby is super stuffed up!

I got two of those 2 piece bulbs in my first son's complete care kit with 2 different tips. They both were awful and wouldn't hold good enough pressure to get out even the tiniest boogers. It took several tries to remove easy to see wet boogies. You'll definitely get more use out if the nosefrida.
  • I loved the snot sucker with my second he had reflux that was projectile.

  • I totally made a conscious decision not to add this to my registry because I thought it was so gross, but now after reading all these comments, I guess I have to get one. My husband thinks it's disgusting and says he won't be going anywhere near it, I told him we'll see if he changes his tune when baby can't sleep because she's so stuffed up
  • As a FTM, I was grossed out when I initially heard about the NoseFrida, but so many of my experienced parent friends raved about it that I added it to the registry. I guess ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

On that note- has anyone used/heard of the Windi? It's basically a disposable catheter that goes up baby's bum to release gas. I'm similarly repelled by this idea, but a few friends have raved about it as well.

I didn't use the Windi but a few ladies on my last BMB raved about it. I used the gas drops (generic is fine Walmart carries them) like it was going out of style and had great luck with them.

I never tried the windi either.
We loved gripe water. Helped with hiccups and gas. I will buy it in bulk this time!
  • Our friends who have a baby gave us one at our baby shower. They swear by it!

P.S. What happens when the extra filter stuff runs out? Is there a way to get more?
