My husband and I are having fun coming up with potential names for our baby, could I get some general opinions on the name Valkyrie for a little girl. I think it's epically adorable and has lots of nickname potential
My first reaction was I don't like it. So I googled it to get the origin. I still don't like it. It literally means "chooser of the slain". Seems more violent then adorable.
(Btw, you may not get what you are looking for when you ask for opinions on names).
It's kind of funny because my husband likes that word but it's a bit too weird for a name so we are thinking about Valerie instead since it's like it but a real name. You could also go with Kyrie which is a cool name.
Yeah. While it's an awesome word and I picture a strong woman.... I also picture dead men laying on the battle field for a valkarie to come take their souls to Valhalla .... so oo Maybe as mentioned above a cute adaptation?
Wasn't that the name of a terrible tom cruise movie? That's the only thing that comes to mind for me. I really don't like it, but like the alternative Valerie.
Personally not a fan. I understand not wanting your child to have the same name as other kids in their class but also think about the name given them. If you look at baby name charts those can give you an idea of what's popular so you can avoid that, if that's what you're trying to avoid. I agree with another user too; before I became a stay-at-home mom I was a teacher and I never had a student with either of those names.
"Flight of the Valkyrie" was composed by Wagner. His anti-semitism influenced Hitler to play/promote it as a representation of the "master race's" talents. Jewish musicians were even forced to play Wagner in concentration camps. This doesn't mean that this is "Valkyrie's" only connotation, but I would steer clear of any name associated with anti-semitism. (I'm a music teacher, so I might be a little too informed on this issue)
Also a teacher who has never had a Valerie or Kyrie in class.
I find Valkyrie cringeworthy, though it makes me think of the old Nintendo game Gauntlet, which I had a lot of fun playing.
If you like the theme, maybe name your child after a valkyrie instead of using the word. Still weird names, still similar themes, not going to make me think "Blue Elf needs food badly" every time I call on them in class.
I see it and think, how on earth am I supposed to pronounce it, and why couldn't her parents name her something real? You can do different but please consider not only your child's future (does it work on a resume? No!) but every first day of school, every college party she will go to and not just be able to make a simple introduction. Find something else unique (NOT yooneeque for goodness sake), and name her something that resembles a name and can be pronounced.
The only exception for this rule in my book is if someone is being named from a certain ethnicity, but then I still urge you to consider a name that works in both languages.

If we wanted a dime a dozen name to be shared with 7 of her classmates every year than we would definitely choose Valerie or Kyrie
Here's an idea, if you don't want opinions, don't ask for them. The general consensus is that Valkyrie is not something you should saddle your kid with.

I'm a music teacher too (Elementary) and I thought the same thing!

I know a Valkyrie and have never really thought twice about her name. She can always go by Val, I think it's unique but not a made up name or difficult to pronounce. I also have never associated her with Hitler or Nazis or anything like that, but it's something to consider if it bothers you.
Yeah, not a fan of Valkyrie either. On the plus side you still have plenty of time to come up with a name for your baby. There is a baby name board if you need to solicit more ideas!

It's my opinion that it's a horrible name.
I asked for opinions because I was ready to hear the general consensus of no and why nots. In my board why can I not post my own opinion back? I was a preschool teacher for many years and have had 4 different Kyries and 3 Valerie's. It could be a regional thing for sure, how ever thank you for all of your input. I feel in my opinion Valkyrie is a strong and powerful name. One to be remembered should she choose to want to be in the spot light for something one day. It also has a ton of versatility for nicknames. Val, Kyrie, Ky, Vee. The list goes on. We would choose a softer middle name to give it a good flow. But I can't seem to shake it. Who ever said we have a while is right. We do and maybe it will change but so far these are my opinions on the current name. Don't get me wrong I wasn't crazy about it at first for all the reasons y'all are posting. But I do like it, a lot.

If you don't care about our reasoning for not liking it, why ask? You're clearly set on it.
I will also echo not liking this name. It's just not a name. And I just picture her having to spell it out every single time.
I have never met a Valerie or a Kyrie (is that one even a name?). But if those are too "common" for you, there are plenty of other less-common names that are actually names. I'm with the other posters who have said don't ask for opinions if you don't actually want them.

I thought this was supposed to be a more supportive community, guess I was wrong. Also if y'all feel it's a waste of time you could always stop following don't post and move on. I really do appreciate all the input. God bless.

The PP gave you good reasons and the general consensus is that as a name, it doesn't work. You got reasons from mythological, historical, ideological, musical and social perspectives. I am an educator and I can see where you're coming from. Do I think it sounds cool? Yes but that's not the only test of a name.
However, if this has clear references to the NAZI party (both through Wagner in which I agree with PP's perspective but also as the name of a failed plot to assassinate Hitler) then I would say that's a big turn off to me. Additionally, you are intentionally naming your daughter after an angel of death (for want of a better phrase) so that she is consistently associated with death, war and suffering.
I would definitely consider this name for a character in a book. For a child and eventually a woman who will have worries, insecurities and opinions? Nope.
Also, I think you're being a tad immature by asking for opinions and then turning around and complaining about a lack of "support". Support doesn't mean agreement. You asked our opinions. I've given you mine.
I think the suggestion to use an actual valkyrie name like Sigrun or Kara would be a better fit. That way you can still call her your little valkyrie, avoid the Wagner association, it shows more depth of research /history, and is a name she can grow with, instead of forever being a character out of a dystopian YA novel.
In fact, there are significantly less Sigruns then Valkyries running around the states right now.
My personal opinion echoes the general consensus of the thread - I didn't like the name at first glance, and disliked it even more after learning about some of the potential connotations of the name.
Just thought I would give you a perspective from someone with an uncommon name. I am Brazilian so although my name is perfectly common and understandable in Brazil, I struggle here in North America (and my first name is not even close to being as long or complicated as the one you propose). Every single time I am asked my name, or if I have to call and leave a message for instance, I have to spell my first name and last name letter by letter to get the point across, and that gets old quickly. And people still butcher my name - few can pronounce it properly. Obviously when my parents named me they would never guess I would one day live outside of Brazil, so it's not their fault of course. But I just wanted you to know that having an unusual name that is not intuitively pronounced or spelled is a huge pain in the buttocks...
Personally, since you are requesting opinions I don't like it and I don't like its connotations. I'm all for unusual names but please think about how it could affect your child's future job prospects, friendships etc.
I don't feel it is a clear reference to the Nazi party. I think that is such a stretch and totally overboard. Legends of valkyries significantly predate Wagner and the Nazi party. Wagner was dead long before there was a Nazi party. As for the name of the Hitler assassination attempt, that is even more absurd to bring up. It was a thing long before that, and regardless of Wagner's personal opinions, Ride of the Valkyries is still great music. Anyway, the general public is too ignorant to think about a name so deeply.
Re: Opinions please
(Btw, you may not get what you are looking for when you ask for opinions on names).
Maybe as mentioned above a cute adaptation?
However, my general opinion is - please no.
Please for your child's sake, reconsider.

I think Kyrie is totally cute- but I don't get quite the same feeling with Valkyrie

That's about as seriously as I can take the thought of naming someone Valkyrie
