hey ladies I'm severely engorged. I'm trying to have LO nurse but he isn't keeping up. I've tried a pump and hand expressing just to relieve some pressure but nothing comes out.

I'm at a loss of what to do.

TTM and for some reason dont remember it ever being this bad!

Re: Engorged

  • Have you tried taking a warm shower? Get in the shower and let the warm water run over your breasts. This will get your milk flowing. While letting the water flow over, also massage your breast, starting at the bottom.
    Then try pumping.
After pumping, put some ice packs on them just to slow the flow of milk down a little, otherwise they'll get engorged again.

  • I was super engorged when my milk first came in. Little man couldn't even come close to latching, they were just too big. I used ice packs, cabbage and gentle massage from the outside in towards the nipple per my lactation consultant. I did this for almost 2 days and then pumped every 3 hours or so. I didn't get barely anything the first few pumpings, just a half ounce or so between both breasts. But after being persistent it's like the floodgates finally opened and I started flowing like crazy.

Some people say hot showers and massaging and letting them hang works too. I didn't do the heat as my LC told me not to. She said not to add heat til the swelling went down.

    Good luck!!
  • I was engorged as well on day 3 and went to see a LC and she told me to put ice packs on them for about 10 mins before pumping and it worked!!
  • I'll need to try the ice because heat had made it so much worse!
  • How many minutes have you been pumping for when you've tried? Not much came out for me my first week, but I was only pumping for 5-10 minutes after a feeding. My little guy is three weeks old now and I've been pumping for 20 minutes after a feeding and massaging each breast as I pump. I've found that it just comes pouring out once I hit 17-18 minutes, so I wasn't pumping long enough before.
  • I'm only doing 10 because anymore is too painful. I have blisters on my nipples from pumping. I think my breast are like this because up until Friday I was having to pump every two hours as well as trying to breast feed with an SNS. I think I'll call my midwife tomorrow about it.
  • Cabbage!!! I heard try putting cold cabbage leaves in your bra… tried it and it works!!! Don't know how, but it does!!! I had also tried pumping and heat. Maybe a combo of everything but the cabbage leaves gives great relief after a couple times.
  • My awesome SO went and bought the lanolin gel packs. They are awesome! I placed them on warm and my breasts started leaking immediately. I let them leak until they were finished. I now have the packs in the freezer. I think I'm going to try the cabbage and quit the pumping altogether, it only makes my nipples worse even with the newmans cream.
  • Gel packs are the best! Hopefully it clears up for you! It's no fun having engorged breasts.
  • @jabeauty90 if pumping is causing blisters you might want to check the size of pump plastic pieces that go over your breast. It could be yours are small, I've had to get a different size for my pump to not get blisters. Good luck!

  • @eajanvrin I have tried three different sizes and it still is causing blisters. :(
