Important Listeria Warning

Good evening!

I read the what are you doing that you shouldn't post (I myself am eating cold cuts) and saw several people are eating soft cheese. This is a news article I read today that I thought you ladies should be aware of:

A Listeria outbreak linked to soft cheeses has caused 24 cases of illness in nine states, including one death and one fetal death, the CDC said Friday. Twenty-one of those who became ill have been hospitalized.

The agency is working with state health officials and the FDA to investigate the outbreak that dates back to August 8, 2010.

The source of the Listeria contamination is still under investigation but most of those who became ill reported eating soft cheese within a month of when they developed symptoms.

This prompted Karoun Dairies, Inc. to announce a voluntary recall and stop production of some of their cheeses on Wednesday. The products that may be contaminated are sold under the brands Karoun, Arz, Gopi, Queso Del Valle, Central Valley Creamery and Yanni. They are vacuum packed in jars or pails and weigh between 5 and 30 ounces, the company said. Recalled products should not be consumed and any restaurants, stores or consumers who have any of these items should return them or throw them away.

The states where illnesses have been reported include California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Tennessee and Washington.

Symptoms of Listeriosis infection include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal illness such as diarrhea. It can also lead to meningitis, it has in three children in this current outbreak. Pregnant women, newborns, older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system are most at risk for infection.

Five pregnant women are among those who have become sick from during this outbreak and one fetal death has been reported. Those who are sick range in age from 1 to 92 and 75% of them are female.

  • There was a huge listeria outbreak from cucumbers recently too.
Really... the risk is just there no matter what. You do what you can.

  • Thanks for the info, littlelady. I don't eat cheese, but I do try to be aware of any outbreaks and appreciate the info. I still eat frozen green beans and spinach, but if there was an outbreak I'd stop. I didn't take it as fear mongering at all :)

  • Umm let's be honest if I had had blue bell in my freezer this summer I would have eaten it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is such a bizarre argument, I'm so confused as to why we're giving OP a hard time. Yes, a link would have been helpful to start but it's good information to spread. I live in one of the states mentioned in the article, and although I'm not a stickler for pregnancy "rules" this will for sure make me think twice about soft cheeses. I'd really rather avoid listeria if possible.

@littlelady325 thank you for the info!

I didn't think I gave her a hard time, and then she called me a witch and implied it was because of my hormones, so.....

  • @lalala2004 I totally agree the witch comment was unnecessary, but you can't deny everyone is jumping all over this girl (even you). She's just trying to share info about a CURRENT listeria outbreak. I think that's a valid topic! I'm not trying to start an Internet war, yo...but give the girl a break.

I'm truly lost as to how my stating of the facts is so offensive. Please go reread what I said, and tell me how I was "jumping all over" her.

I asked for a link because she didn't provide one. The only date in what she copied was from 2010, making this seem like it happened 5 years ago. There have been many listeria outbreaks from many food sources. Doctors want you to eat pasteurized cheese if you eat soft cheeses.

I never said it wasn't a valid topic, but I have my opinion on the topic.

@kmalls I don't know if you're just a WK or if you have a problem with me personally. If you do, feel free to PM me.

  • Easy there, killer. I have no problem with you or anyone else. All I'm saying is the responses OP got were disproportionate to the info she posted. I'm not "offended" by your arguments and I'm not a white knight, but I absolutely don't mind speaking up when I feel like something is off. That's all it is. Have a great morning.
  • I think this thread escalated due to the name- calling, which is never constructive. Like the OP, I also agree that current events in health issues relevant to pregnant women is useful. But I also agree that a lot of info (some of which is BS) gets thrown around here with no cites/links, so I can understand asking for more info/clarification.

    Yep.

I was the only response, and that's when the name calling happened. Everyone after that was responding to someone who broke the TOU.

@kmalls you defended someone who broke the TOU, what is your definition of a WK?

  • @lalala2004 I agreed the witch comment was unnecessary. At this point it just seems like you're looking for a fight. I'm personally done with this thread, but feel free to keep posting at me if it makes you feel better.
  • Hopefully the cake doesn't have any listeria in it. XD

PS- The solution to any listeria concerns is heat. Bake the Brie or Camembert for goodness sake.

Both go great with chicken & veggies. No need to arm flail over this if you just heat your food.

The sickest I ever got was from a portobello-spinach sandwich. This fear mongering over soft cheese is crazy-- just heat it up & boom done.

This weekend I'm baking Brie with some apple butter as a dip....YUM

  • All this over some cheese?
  • All this over some cheese?
To me, cheese is a very serious subject.
