UO Thursday

Re: UO Thursday

  • With the college discussion my parents didn't pay for me and didn't have anything set aside. We couldn't afford to send me to college without me getting loans. Because I struggled in college and changed my major once it took me 5 years to graduate and my student loans are hurting me and my husband from buying a house. So yeah I without a doubt am putting something aside for my kids every month for college. They will still have to work for stuff, apply for scholarships, and make good grades.

Well since we've gone there and since this will actually be unpopular: I freaking love Bernie sanders. Single payer healthcare. FTW.

TBH, I don't know enough about him to love him. But I certainly don't think he's the worst option out there, while some of the other candidates are still around. From what I've seen, his ideas seem to be grounded in actual logic, and I respect that he is willing to show up and answer questions even when he knows his audience is of a different political background.

  • @DougalMcG not entirely unpopular!

My Mom and I were poor, below poverty line poor, when it was time for me to go to college. She was widowed and had married early so she worked min wage jobs. I paid for college on my own with a blend of scholarships, grants, and loans. Education was a way to a better life and I appreciated the opportunity to go to college. I graduated in 3.5 years and never missed a class due to partying and worked about 30 hours a week as well. We will put some money aside but I'm not planning on paying for the entirely of my kids education. We will encourage community college and then state schools unless they get a scholarship. DH went to state schools and paid his way as well.
  • Since the college thing is apparently a hot topic, here's another UO of mine: I think a college degree is totally overrated. Don't get me wrong, I think higher education is very important to society as a whole, and has its place. But it's 100% not for everyone, and does not guarantee that you get better jobs or make more money.

My husband and I both graduated from one of the top public universitis in NC (my husband, with a degree in textiles, and this school is the #2 school for textiles world-wide). We were living below the poverty line after we got married and were both working full time in our respective fields. I recruited for some general labor positions and would hire welders with 6 months experience starting at $19 an hour. A welding certificate costs about $3k and takes a little over a year to get. There are way too many trade jobs that pay well and aren't getting filled because people think that college is the only way to go. Believe me, I'll be pushing my kids to go to community college, unless theyou already know what they're planning on doing.
  • I'm a Republican and I am terrified if Donald Trump wins the nomination. I don't know HOW he is winning the popularity right now...*sigh*

Me TOO! God help us all if he wins the nom.
  • My parents saved college money for me and my 2 siblings. But then we all got full scholarships. So they bought an apartment for us to live in while we were in school. Five years later, they sold it for twice what they paid for it.

The actually made money by us being in school.
  • Question for those who identify as republican and hate trump. If he were to win republican vote, what would you do?

Probably vote libertarian depending on the candidate. If he gets it I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see someone run as a write in.

Third party or Bernie Sanders. I'm not a fan of the Democratic Party in general but I think we'd be better off with him than with Trump, but I couldn't vote for Clinton.

I can't stand people who name their kid one thing, and the call them by a completely different name. Not like a derivative of the name, like Meg instead of Margaret or Rick for Richard. More like:" hi my name is Charlie, but I go by Brad." Why not just name your kid Brad then? Maybe this is a teacher pet peeve of mine, but I find it annoying.

My brother and sister in law named my nephew Tristan Alexander after my brother Tristan. Beautiful name!!! Freaking awesome name and they call him Alex. Haven't called him Tristan ONCE since the day he was born. Infuriates me.

As far as the OP, I have so many UP I could literally fill a bible sized book. If I were to post even 2-3 it would probably result in some bump banning. Lol. I feel like I have practically nothing in common with any of the women on here. So, yeaaah....

Correction, MOST of the women on here. Many of you are pretty great ;)
  • My parents paid for most of my college, but I took about 40k in loans and have paid most of them back. There's no way I could have afforded all of it (I have friends with hundreds of thousands in loans) but having a small financial stake in my education made me feel more responsible for it. Plus it gave me credit, which has been very helpful. I think it's important not to saddle your kids with unmanageable debt, but a little bit can teach them a lot about fiscal responsibility.
