Babies on the Brain

Yet another introduction

I've been lurking for a while, and have responded to a few posts, so I guess it's about time I introduce myself.

I'm 29, DH is 31, living in NYC. We've been married for 1 year but been together for 11. I've had the baby fever for a while, and FINALLY DH is on board. We will start TTC#1 in Nov/Dec 2015.
My birthday is in November and the big 3-0 is stressing me out!

I'm expecting to stick around for a while. Starting January we will be doing long distance for 6 months. Like really long distance. We are both from Norway, and I am moving back for work while he stays in the US until next summer. So we are pretty lucky if we manage to get a BFP before we are living on the same continent again.

So, that's me. Nice to meet you girls!

Re: Yet another introduction

  • Welcome and nice to meet you!

Good luck on the long distance! I lived a part from my husband for our entire, very long engagement and while it was challenging, it was a moment that I knew more than ever that we would be partners for life. Hopefully your experience will be as rewarding as it is difficult! It's not easy to be away from the person you love.

Look forward to getting to know you more on the board :) .

  • Thank you both! And good luck to you too!

@gabpepsi I'm not that worried about the long distance itself. We've done it before, and 6 months is not so long. But it will make the TTC a lot harder...
  • Hi and welcome @Hulabalu! Keep us updated on the continental travels. Good luck in Nov/Dec and can't wait to get to know you better. Come on and enjoy BOTB with us, friend!
  • Welcome! Good luck!

I'm glad that you feel confidently! 6 months will go fast. And it may make TTC harder or you may be among the lucky few that gets a BFP right away. Either way, wishing you all the best! :)
  • Welcome! Where from Norway are you from? I'm heading to Norway in two weeks!
  • Welcome and good luck.

  • @S&DSwenson I'm from the northern part, but I've lived in Oslo for years.

Where in Norway are you going? Vacation or work?
  • @Hulabalu we will be spending 10 days in oslo and 5 in Bergen. Honeymoon :) any tips?
  • @S&DSwenson  I can definitely come up with some tips for Oslo! I don't know Bergen very well, though.

10 days in Oslo is a long time! Are you planning on travelling in the area? Will you have a rental car? What kind of things are you interested in -.food & drinks, music, history, art? What are you already planning on doing?
  • @hulabalu well we already know we're going to Oktober fest when we're there, def checking out some museums with the oslo pass 1 day, con tiki, cultural history museum, viking ship museum, sculpture park, botanical garden, opera house,.. all of the obvious tourist things. Would also like to find some good seafood markets. Love good food, beer, we are staying in Grunerlokka in an apartment and would like to find some more... local style things to do. Not renting a car. We will be in Bergen for a day so we can go explore out side of the city but not in Oslo. Thanks!

@S&DSwenson  Grünerløkka is my favorite part of town, I lived there for a few years. It's a very nice place to just walk around and explore. A lot of nice cafes, restaurants and shops. Especially Thorvald Meyers gate and Markveien is nice. You should also go to "Mathallen" - the food hall - (https://www.mathallenoslo.no/) which is a very short walk from Grünerløkka.

If the weather is good, you should definitely go up to Holmenkollen, where you have a great view over the city. You can take the metro (T-bane) all the way there. If you want to go hiking there is a lot of places you could go by city bus or metro. If you would like to go a bit into the woods without too much of a hiking effort Sognsvann is pretty nice. It can be kind of crowded on evenings and weekends, but you can take the metro up there and walk up to Ullevålseter or Skjennungstua. It is not too far, and it really is nice if the fall colors have arrived. There you can buy coffee and some Norwegian pastries in a pretty traditional cabin.

If the weather is nice you should also walk along Akerselva. Walking from Günerløkka and north is pretty nice.

When it comes to restaurants I really like St. Lars (https://stlars.no/) in St.Hanshaugen for some good meat (cote du boeuf is excellent, and the fries are to die for!). Villa Paradiso (https://villaparadiso.no/) is a pizza staple in Grünerløkka, and is both charming and good. I really love Trattoria Popolare (https://www.popolare.no/) in Grünerløkka. Other popular spots in the area is Tijuana (mexican),

For beer, you could try Grünerløkka Brygghus (https://brygghus.no/) or Crow Bar in Torggata (short walk from Grünerløkka). If you are in Torggata and find yourself hungry, there are a lot of cool places nearby. Taco Republica (https://tacorepublica.no/) is a charming mexican spot, or you can try Lokk (https://lokkoslo.no).

For bars Aku Aku (https://www.akuaku.no/) in Grünerløkka is very popular and VERY busy. There is a brand new place, Himkok (https://www.himkok.no/) where they make their own liquor, and the people who mix the drinks wear lab coats. I really like Bettola in Grünerløkka, it is next door to Trattoria Popolare and they make great cocktails.

If you want to go out dancing, Grünerløkka has a few choices, but might not really be the best spot. You should probably head west, to Majorstuen or Solli Plass. The vibe is different there, more "posh", while Grünerløkka is more trendy, hip and casual.

You should also walk around Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen, it is a pretty nice part of town. For me it feels a bit touristy in the summer, but it is not the top season so it will probably not feel that way when you are there. There are a lot of restaurants there, and some of them are pretty good.

Since you are staying for a while you should also check the nearby small cities, where you can go pretty cheaply by train or boat on a daytrip. I would suggest Fredrikstad or Drøbak. Check out this article: https://www.visitoslo.com/en/activities-and-attractions/10-suggestions/outside-oslo/

As you can see, I mostly hang around in Grünerløkka when I'm in town. But the city is quite compact, and very walkable. I'm actually going to Oslo on Sunday, but leave on October 1st, so we probably don't overlap?

    *Edited to add more info*
  • @hulubalu dang girl! You know your stuff! Thank you so so much! Amazing. We will def be using these suggestion. No unfortunately we get in on October first.

    Thank you so much
  • You're welcome @S&DSwenson ! Hope you have an amazing time in Oslo! :-)
