High-Risk Pregnancy

Seizures / epilepsy

Anyone else out there pregnant with epilepsy and have an AED on board?

I am 9 weeks and was on 2000mg of Keppra XR a day and the hormone levels have my med levels going crazy so I just got bumped to 2500mg... I know that it's one of the lower risk meds but it still terrifies me.

Taking 4mg of folic acid a day.

Re: Seizures / epilepsy

  • I do. I take 200 mg zonegran daily. I also take folic acid.
I have had no problems with previous pegnancy and this one is going well.

  • I take 300mg Lamictal a day and 4mg folic acid. My AFP just came back normal (no increased chance of neural tube defects), so I am pretty happy. I have worried a lot about my meds and having seizures while pregnant, so you're not alone.
  • Nice to know I'm not alone. Just got my new blood levels back and they are even lower! I am being bumped to 3000mg of Keppra and then 3500 2 weeks later.

I feel like a crazy person I keep calling the specialist freaking out about the dosage.

I have my First Trimester Screen and indepth blood work on the 22nd to look for defects etc. *fingers crossed till then!*
  • I took 200mg lamictal and 4mg folic acid and prenatals during my first pregnancy. My baby girl was born at 28 weeks with a cleft palate. Did not see any defects on ultrasounds or tests. So this pregnancy I'm not going to take my lamictal. At least for the first few weeks. I don't recommend you do the same. Please listen to your Drs. I have not had a seizure in 20 years and have gone years seizure free on no meds.
  • I have been off all meds and have had no siezures in 6 years. The seizures only lasted 12 ish months. I have been having weird episodes for the last week(27 weeks pregnant) that are not seizures of fainting. The Dr has just put me on 250mg of keppra twice daily. Im scared of the risk to my baby.
  • At 27 weeks you're baby is pretty far along and well developed. I think the biggest risks with AEDs are birth defects like spina bifida and cleft palate. But those are done forming somewhere at like 12 weeks ish. So if you're just starting your meds now you should be good. I'm probably going to start taking my meds again somewhere after 12 weeks depending on how I feel. Sounds like you're doing everything right.
  • Be sure to read the pamphlet that you get with your drugs. My Drs said breastfeeding was ok... But that's bc there's no evidence to prove the drugs interactions cuz they don't do experiments on pregnant and breastfeeding women or children under 2. So when my baby started having sleep apnea, I read the pamphlet (got a copy online) and it says if baby gets sleep apnea discontinue immediately cuz that's signs of overdose. Now how many companies will admit that there's something bad about their product? So I tend to believe that it's legit and serious. So I told my Drs no more breastmilk for baby. They were very pushy about staying with the breastmilk. I said no way! formula is way better than overdosing on a drug
  • I will be 12 weeks on Friday and am going to a high risk specialist for a detailed ultrasound to check for any defects. I have been on mine non stop since I got pregnant. In fact since my blood volume has increased and my metabolism has changed my med levels have dropped dramatically . I am on almost 3500 mg per day now which is a terrifying amount , but the damage that could be caused by a seizure are also terrifying.

I am seeing specialists at Yale New Haven that deal specifically with pregnancy and epilepsy.

As far as breast milk goes for me, the doctors have said bc I am on it for the entire pregnancy that by the time I am breast feeding the amount the baby gets will be negligible compared to what it's exposure has been in utero
