Baby name help!!!

My husband and I had originally settled on the name Emma Lynn for a baby girl but I'm finding that almost EVERYONE I know is naming their baby girl Emma. So I'm playing with the idea of choosing the name Harper instead. But I can't decide on a middle name!! I have toyed with Harper Leigh Ann, Harper Cassandra (my middle name), and Harper Marie. My husband suggested Harper Christine. (Which makes me crinkle my nose. I'm not a fan)

For the name Emma Lynn, we would split up the name into 1st name Emma and middle name Lynn, but we would call her by both names. And as much as I don't want to follow the Emma trend, I do feel that the name Emma Lynn is still pretty unique.

So should I stick with my original choice of Emma Lynn? Or do I switch to Harper? And if I go with Harper what suggestions do you have for a middle name?

Re: Baby name help!!!

  • I like Emma Lynn!

  • If you love a name than stick with it! I grew up with a very common name and have never suffered in school, work or life!
  • I know 3 Emma Lynn's personally. I do like how Harper Lynn flows, though.

  • If you like one name better then use it. Those are both popular names right now.
  • We are having a boy but we were going to do Harper Elizabeth for a girl

  • Finding a name that you and your SO both love and is spelled correctly is always a win, even if it is popular. But if you can find a less popular name you both love I would go for that (just my personal preference). Honestly, I do like Harper more than Emma, even though Emma is a very cute name. Out of the middle names you've suggested I like Harper Leigh the best (without the Ann). In the end go with whatever you love the most. Good luck!
  • 23+5 FTM with baby girl. My husband and I has had Harper picked out since before I got pregnant. We struggled with a middle my. His middle name is Lee, so we thought Harper Leigh would be cute, but in the end, we both agreed that it just didn't fit. So we are naming her Harper May. I've never meet anyone named Harper and that's one reason we chose it. But Emma is also a beautiful name and I would go with your gut instinct. Say it out loud a bunch of times to. Thay helped us alot. Good luck!
  • I think if you love Emma Lynn, go for it.

But it is not unique in any way shape or form, for that matter, Harper is pretty popular too.
  • Love harper! Though Harper Leigh reminds me of the author harper lee. Not a bad thing, but just wanted to point that out.

We were going to name our daughter harper but decided against it. Harper was listed as #11 in 2014 in popularity. I would stick with Emma because Harper will put you in the same boat.
  • Stick with Emma! Both are pretty popular right now, I think I hear them both equally as often on the playground. Harper seems much more trendy to me and Emma is a bit more classic.
  • Both are really popular, so if you're choosing one over the other because you think it's more unique- it's not.

Harper Lee (the author) wrote To Kill A Mockingbird. I would consider that before using the name Harper Leigh.
  • If you like Emma, I would just go for it, especially since Harper is actually becoming/is super popular.

  • If you love the name Emma Lynn, keep it!.. My sister in law was pregnant with a girl, due after me, I couldn't find out the sex of my baby, so I had two names picked out for boy and girl. My baby girl was born first, but while pregnant, she made me Vito my name, because it was the same one she wanted and she KNEW she was having a girl... I changed my baby name to stop an argument, and she had her girl two weeks later, and chose a completely different name!!
  • I'm biased because my daughter's name is Harper. Her middle name is Jeanne, after my mom who passed away. It doesn't flow that well but I didn't care. I think Harper Lynn sounds nice so you can still go with that middle name, and I really like Harper Elizabeth. Do you like Harper Rose? I have to agree with some of the others and say that Emma is super, super popular. Harper is popular too, just not on the same level as Emma.
  • Both are popular but I prefer Emma by a lot.  Harper is trend city where Emma while popular isn't trendy popular. It's been popular for a long time.  Harper is masculine currently trendy on girls and will likely date your child much like Ashley of the 80's/early 90's.

  • How about Harper Lynn?
  • I really like Emma Lynn, but to make it more unique have you thought of making the full first name EmmaLynn and maybe Harper as middle name?

If you think into the future of school and want her to be called Emma Lynn, you'll end up having most people just call her Emma if that is listed alone as her first name. I know a bunch of Emma's but not a single EmmaLynn. (Minus Army Wive's character :) )

  • Emma Lynn is very pretty.
  • Harper Lynn is adorable!
  • I LOVE the name Harper - if I was having a girl and my sister let me (lol) I would have named her Harper. It's so unique.
    Emma is also adorable.
I think you should name your child what you wish- bump everyone else.
When I was in high school half the class was named Britney or Jessica- it doesn't matter.
She is your baby- name her what you think will suit her :)
  • No wrong choice! Both are lovely. Harper has gotten very popular too, so you can avoid that. But popular names like Emma that are classic are popular for a reason! Emma's not a trendy name, just a popular one that's been loved for centuries, so i don't think it's s problem. Also. DS has a very popular name but he's 4 and we have not met any others with his name at school or in groups etc so you're not guaranteed to have like 5 in her class!

  • Harper Sophia or Harper Rose are both nice too!
  • I prefer Emma Lynn. I can't stand the name Harper personally... though that could stem from being from Canada and the ass that is Stephen Harper...

I really like both Emma and Harper, but both names are popular right now. However, Emma is classic. I wouldn't say that Emma Lynn is an especially unique combination, but it's still pretty. I think you should go with it since it is your first choice.
