Burp Cloths?

What's the deal with burp cloths? Are they really needed or a waste
of money /space?

I checked the search and saw that some said they were great and others said they were a waste, so now I'm wondering if we even need them? Thoughts?

Thanks ladies!

Re: Burp Cloths?

  • FTM so no advice really, but I have about 4 of those small over the shoulder burp clothes, and about 15-20 receiving blankets (garage sales) that I figured I would keep around for spit ups/messes.

  • First time mom, but I have experience with nannying several infants. I find that having something that serves as a burp cloth is very handy, however I find the cutesy burp clothes aren't all that useful. Like, I have a pack that a family member sent me that is cute, but they are like tshirt material and are likely never going to get used. I've found that I like the flat diaper cloth things (sorry, struggling for words) best. They aren't cute, but they serve the purpose well.
  • A towel (like little hand towels) or something similar would work just as well. DD1 had horrible reflux and would projectile (tmi sorry) her spit up, it would get all over her and us and sometimes the floor or sofa. They come in handy but things around the house could be used as the same thing so there is no real need to spend money if you already have something you can use.
  • I couldn't get enough burp clothes with my first, but maybe he spit up more than average?  Anyway, a friend sent me a couple of Aden + Anais burp cloths when my son was born and they were amazing!  Getting some more for this little guy!

I did this as well but I bought some patterned fabric to make them cute.

  • Another vote for cloth diaper inserts for burp cloths. When DS was older we then used then for nose wipes.
Burp cloths was one of the items I did not think I needed as a FTM but used all time

  • I used a ton of receiving blankets! They were my go to for a ton of things. I always nursed with one, used them as covers if I needed to while nursing. My first son also is like his own huge heat sorce so I would lay one on my arm so his head wouldn't swet on my arm with the skin to skin. I also always had one near them if they spit up. Plus they are not bulky.
  • We used receiving blankets too. With the reflux sometimes it was a fountain.
  • We've gotten a wide range of items that will be used as burp clothes. Gerber Prefold diapers, actual "burp clothes," receiving blankets... I think the Gerber diapers will be used the most
  • I used the "cute" ones when we went out and the plain cheap white ones around the house.

    And this.

Receiving blankets were so useful to me! The cloths that are sold as burp cloths were so tiny that they never worked for me, and my two girls barely even spit up at all. I can't imagine trying to use those little things with a baby who spits up a lot!

  • Cloth diapers!! They are the best. Also nice to give family or friends that are over something to protect themselves from whatever baby may let loose on them. I have an in law who goes VERY heavy on the perfume and try to make sure she has a blanket or burp cloth when she holds babies as they smell like her for hours if I don't!

  • My husband's great aunt made me about a dozen homemade burp cloths when pregnant with dd! We used them all the time! We also used our receiving blankets as well. They were a life saver for my shirt and also when other's wanted to hold her we made them use the burp cloths because our daughter had sensitive skin to most laundry detergent so the burp cloths kept her face from getting rashes when getting cuddles from others!
  • I made some myself, plus little bibs if two different sizes, one side is soft cotton, and the other is sponge, everybody I talked to told me it was super useful and I would need a bunch, so I made 10 bibs and 10 burpclothes.
  • I have a few ones that I got from the bargain bin at Walmart. I'm also pretty good at sewing/knitting what have you so I may make some if needed.

I actually think receiving blankets are super useful. The daycare I used to work at ran through them like gangbusters.
    Do unto others.

Honestly I used recieving blankets for everything. They are the absolute most handy thing to have with babies even older kids too. :) I still use them for my two other boys when they have a runny nose or cold. Much gentler than tissues on their nose. And mop up drool from teething.

Me to! The last time they had the stomach flu they came in handy!
  • I'm a FTM but I've been told by 2 experienced mother that cloth diaper inserts are the way to go for burp cloth type needs. Which reminds me, I need to put that on my registry.

  • Like PP have mentioned, I've done lots of nannying/working in day cares and find that cloth diapers or folded receiving blankets are the best for catching spit up when burping. The cutesy burp cloths are smaller, need to be washed more frequently, and don't hold up as well. I think the Gerber packs of cloth diapers are the absolute best way to go!
  • I made a ton out of the same material as my cloth diaper inserts! 2 layers of a Bamboo/Cotten blend. Super absorbent. Also receiving blankets. We easily went through a dozen burp cloths a day too.

  • Use dry diapers. Even if you don't mind spit-up on your clothes, it's common courtesy to give them to other people when/if they hold the baby.
  • Agreed that the cloth diaper inserts are awesome.  I am also making some receiving blankets.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • I used receiving blankets with all 3 of my babies. They are so versatile. Not just for spit up. I used them to swaddle etc...
  • The cloth diaper idea is great - which sparked my memory. My cousin made me a few burp rags out of cloth diapers and she put some cute fabric on them. All my baby shower gifts are still back home 1,500 miles away so I forgot about them!

  • Burp cloth, receiving blanket, towel...doesn't really matter what you want to call it or what style you want to use....but you're going to need something to clean up all the spit ups and projectile fluids your baby might surprise you with.

  • You don't need anything that's specifically marketed as a burp cloth, as PPs have mentioned.  You'll definitely want something, but a cloth diaper or flannel receiving blanket works just fine for burping.
  • Also agree on the cloth diapers!
Way back in the day I ordered some babyjar burpies off of zulily, and love them. They are pretty much fancy cloth diapers.
We ended up buying some from the actual site when they were having a 40% off sale(they have them frequently). We opted to have them embroidered which was great.
The Aden and anais burpie bibs were great too as they were especially useful when starting solids.

  • Complete waste of money if you ask me! I used cloth diapers as burp cloths as they are very absorbent. This was almost 6 years ago though... have they changed the burp cloths?

I never thought of using them for mopping up puke. I don't think I could handle that though. I'm such a sap; I hated getting stains on their receiving blankets!

  • We had them in every room! Mostly used the gerber diaper ones. We also used a lot of receiving blankets.
I leaned to never put the baby down on something like the couch or my own bed with out a blanket under her butt and head! It saved a lot of stains on the couch.
  • @elbou I had a TON of receiving blankets and would pick them up second hand. We usually lay a towel down when our kids are sick so the can lay on that, but when all 3 got sick we started using the receiving blankets to lay down. Also helps catch puke with the really lil ones so it doesn't get everywhere, oh the joys of parenthood :)
  • Is this what some of yall are talking about?
    FTM confused at Target.

    Yes, exactly!!

BRU has a large pack of them, 12 for $16 I think. They also had some colored ones if you want something cute.

My parents still have some of these laying around the house as cleaning rags from when we were little.

  • I'm so glad somebody asked.. When I worked at my churches nursery they used receiving blankets for everything.. I had a pack that was open that I got at Walmart for a couple of dollars when I first got my chihuahua and he uses them as blankets in his bed.. Like he covers himself.. It's quite adorable!! But I got a lot of receiving blankets at my shower so now I know what I'm going to do with them..
  • @Cook3133, That's what I usually do when they're sick too. Towels are so much easier to clean up than the sheets/bed/couch!

To be fair, I did use receiving blankets to catch puke when they were really little and it was mostly milk based. My kids didn't get sick when they were that little very often so I had forgotten about that. They also spat up their milk very minimally, so I didn't have a huge stash of blankets to begin with. The ones I do have, I've grown very sentimentally attached to. Like I said, I'm a sap ;)

These are what I've used with both my girls & have also bought 2 packs already for this one.
  • Tri-fold cloth diapers worked the best for my first two and I plan on using them again this time around :)
