8 weeks along - gestational diabetes

hello- I found out that I have gestational diabetes. I don't have an informative meeting until next Tuesday and I can't get a hold on this at all. I'm scared that I'm going to eat the wrong things all of the time. I also feel like everything I war either makes my blood sugar spike or I am scared to eat and it drops. I feel like crying and I don't know what to do. I'm scared all of the time and I feel sick all of the time too. Is anyone else going through this or has anyone gone through this in the past? What do I do? What do I eat? Please help if you can.

  • I found out at 6 weeks. I am now 9 weeks. Everyone is different but for me bread and rice shoot my numbers through the ceiling. It's scary at first but I'm starting to get used to it. No milk or fruits first thing In The morning and just make sure to eat small meals every three hours.

  • I'm 8 weeks and I have type 2 diabetes. Staying away from white bread, pastas, and the like helps. Also you can have fruit but in moderation like you can have 11 grapes, half a banana, there is nothing to be afraid of it is manageable. I have had a child already having diabetes and she is fine and with her I craved sout patch kids the worst thing I could eat lol. If you can after you eat take a 20 min moderate walk it will help bring levels down. Once you meet with your nutritionist you will see its very manageable. If you have any questions I'm here to help. Ease your mind you and baby will be just fine
  • Hello, I had GD in my first pregnancy, nothing in my second, and was diagnosed with type 2 this spring. I can remember feeling very scared and overwhelmed when my doctor delivered my GD diagnosis. Make sure you get set up with a diabetes education class. The diabetes educator will help you develop a meal plan and understand how to test your blood sugar. Usually that will involve carb counting. A lot will be trial and error at the start, learning how certain foods impact your blood sugar.

Moderate Exercise, if you are medically cleared, will help a lot with controlling your blood sugar.

The good news is that catching it early means you and baby have the best chance at a healthy pregnancy and delivery! Mine was diagnosed after the 28week test, and I went on to have a healthy 7lb13oz girl.

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions or just need to vent :)

  • I had GD with my first, so they took my fasting level at 8 weeks this time. It is too high, so it looks like I have it again. I'm looking for tips to control the fasting numbers. Diet and exercise have easily controlled my after meal numbers, but my fasting numbers have been around 107. This didn't happen the first time. Any tips would help! Thanks!

@nomimomma In my experience the fasting number is the hardest to influence. Sometimes what you eat at night can have an impact. Do you have a snack before bed?

  • @Monicagail1 I read about having protein before bed so I have tried a hard boiled egg, cheese, Greek yogurt, protein bar (on separate days) and my number has gotten worse. The first day I did nothing it was 97. Ever since I started trying these snacks it has been 105-112. Maybe I should go back to doing nothing? I've only been testing for a week, so I'm at a bit of a loss.
  • @nomimomma my diabetes educator suggested trying more (healthy) carbs with my bedtime snack, along with a fat or protein. Said it might trick my liver into not dumping sugar overnight. Ultimately it didn't work for me, but it didn't make things any worse.

Fasting has always been my trouble number since my type 2 diagnosis. Pre-preg I was routinely 110-120. Pretty much right at the start of this pregnancy I went on a long acting night time insulin and it's been very effective.

  • @Monicagail1 I will try some carbs tonight with my snack. Thanks! What kind of risks did they mention with taking the insulin? I'm so nervous that's where I'm headed and I really don't want to, but I'm also worried these high numbers are hurting the baby.
  • @NomiMomma My understanding through my docs and additional reading is that insulin is the safest and most recommended diabetes med, as it doesn't cross the placenta.

The primary risk would be spells of low blood sugar. My dr started me on a conservative dose and gradually increased until my numbers were where they wanted. My situation is a little different, in that I knew going in to pregnancy that I would be on insulin at some point, but in many ways it was a relief because I don't have to stress as much about those am numbers.
