November 2015 Moms

Dear creator of maternity clothes

You are our of your f-ing mind. I just put in a size 16 Jean that was given to me with NO stretch and they are tight. I was not in a 16 before pregnancy so I thought no problem they would fit. Also I know everyone doesn't agree but I don't want a shirt that is not fitted. I prefer to see my pregnant belly instead of something hanging on belly to where you say I am 80% sure she's pregnant. Ok rant over

Re: Dear creator of maternity clothes

  • I totally agree with you!!!! I feel like they all look like my mom should be wearing them and I promise you my mom isn't having anymore babies! I finally broke down and ordered some "fall" clothes (due 11-30) because I didn't think I could make it without a pair of jeans til then. Ordered the maternity jeans 4 sizes bigger than my pre-pregnancy pants size and they actually fit. I about cried.

  • I ordered a side panel pair in one size up, and there's plenty of room. :-?? I ordered a full panel pair in a darker wash for when the Fall weather really comes in, but I haven't tried them on yet.  As far as tops go, though, I have to agree that some of them are WAY too drapey.
  • I ordered a pair of pants up one size, had to return because they were too small. I ordered another pair of maternity pants up two sizes, they were also too small! I was so upset, I went up to the attic and unpacked my pre-pregnancy pants. My pre-pregnancy pants still fit, just not in the belly. What kind of sense does that make. They were all old navy pants too.

Speaking of maternity jeans, anyone have a favorite brand, cut, style? I'm pretty normal size (5'5") but don't want anything that looks too mom jean. I also like maternity pants that are the high stretchy waste band type. Would be so helpful as I'll need a pair or two very soon!

I've found Jessica Simpson's brand looks really good on me.  I bought them from Motherhood Maternity.  It's hard to get a universal PERFECT JEAN because every body is different and everybody likes to emphasize different aspects of their body or is more comfortable in differing styles.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

Mine are from Gap.  They aren't mom jean-y at all.  They are skinnies, but very stretchy and comfy.  I Probably didn't have to order a size up, but at least I know they'll fit the whole time.  Oh, and they've been washing really well!

I made my own jeans extender. My jeans fit way better than maternity jeans. I took a couple of pairs of old jeans and cut off the button part and made a new hole in the piece I cut off. With an under shirt to help hold the button down so it's not so lumpy, it has worked great. Even with fitted maternity tops, you can't tell that is what I did. Way cheaper and way less of a hassle. I'm 33 weeks today and that has worked the whole time. I have also found that in a pinch, a hair tie around the button and through the button hole works too. Though the piece from the jeans offers a little more support because it isn't stretchy.
That's genius! I think I'm going to try that.
  • This is one of those moments that I'm grateful to be living in Hawaii, so I don't have to worry about finding maternity jeans. The couple pairs of shorts I have were enough of a struggle, I don't think I'd wanna do the trial and error process with jeans right now!

I'm 100% agreed on the form fitting shirts, though. I have a couple more flowy tops, and I hate them. I feel frumpy and like I'm wearing a tent. I'm all about wearing shirts that cling to the bump
  • I feel like I'm constantly pulling my jeans up to avoid saggy ass. It doesn't happen with my normal trousers just every Friday when I wear my maternity skinny jeans to work. I stick to dresses and shorts on the weekends
  • Honestly, I just raided garage sales. I found ONE pair of jeans. They are little long and like to fall down, So I will probably be buying another pair soon.

The thing the bugs me is when tops aren't stretchy. My boobs are getting bigger people! Can we do something to accommodate them??? The belly fits just fine, but my boobs feel like they are having the life squeezed out of them!
  • And the fact that I can't find any cheap shorts that fit! They are all in a size way to small and I'm so hot but all I have are long pants
  • I splurged on the AG jeans at A Pea in The Pod and they have been amazing. Side panel doesn't work for me (had to send back some J Crew pants for that reason) ... I need the full giant stretchy panel that goes all the way around. They were really expensive but I've been wearing them since I got them and they're going to remain a staple for the next few months ... I'm actually contemplating getting a second pair, but it's tough to justify the price now that I'm close to the end.
  • I've had good luck with the maternity clothing at Target...jeans included! :)
  • My problem isn't pants. It's shirts. The ones that aren't too drapey are too stinkin short. Ummm hello?! I want my belly and boobs covered. Not either or. And all of my non-maternity tanks are getting too short to cover both my boobs and belly. Annoying.

I like my jeans a bit looser, and the Liz Lange ones are pretty comfy. They also come in Tall size, which makes me very happy :). They seem to run a bit big, though. I was a 16 pre-pregnancy, and the Liz Lange 16s fit me a tad bit loose. They're the one pair of pants I can still fit. I'm all about the dresses and leggings or long old navy maxi skirts at this point...

I'm a lover of Gap maternity jeans. I found one at a consignment shop and then hit eBay! I also need longs so another reason to love Gap. Old navy and sizes don't add up.

I also don't understand why not more boob room!! I had some shirts that I couldn't wait to wear and the weather finally cooled off enough and I couldn't get the damn shirt over my boobs! And others not button >:( Peak a boob....

My newest issue is some shirts aren't long enough, doesn't help I'm tall, but still I don't need my maternity band on my pants showing or the bottom of my belly [-X
  • Ok so it's definitely a splurge item but I wear jeans everyday and dresses aren't a great option at my job but Paige makes a pretty awesome maternity jean. They are side panel but I've been rocking them for a while now and they are amazing. I have a booty and big thighs pre-preg.

Same here for thicker legs/rear.  My favorite pre-pregnancy jean was the Gap curvy fit.

You should check out barbell apparel when you are feeling up to post preggo jeans. Nice fit for athletic build and no waist gap... I'm pretty stoked to get back into regular pants
  • How come so many maternity dresses/shirts have horizontal stripes on them? Totally does not help the cause.

Thank you! I was just complaining about this today.
Give me some vertical stripes please.

Check H&M, I just bought a pair of jeans there and I love them. Although I'm regularly a size 6 in H&m jeans and had to get size 10 maternity ones (and I'm all belly :(() so don't get discouraged if the sizes seem off. But overall they're super cute and stretchy, they have a bunch of different washes and definitely not a mom Jean! Some h&ms don't have a maternity section so I would just recommend calling ahead of time to make sure they have it :)

I have two of these (black and gray) that I attach to whatever pants I'm wearing. I have not had to buy any maternity pants yet, just shirts.
  • I've been good so far with Target for jeans/shorts, and Motherhood for tops.  Motherhood has a better variety of pants options, but the way they cut the jeans for the stretch panel, they sit far too low on my butt to be comfy, and they fall down constantly.  Target only has the 1 style in boot cut (I don't do skinny jeans, too much hips/butt to be flattering) but I bought 3 pairs and they're the only pants I wear now.  But I just don't like their tops.  They're just really, really basic and boring.  Motherhood's tops can be pricey, but luckily I'm near an outlet store of theirs and they have a decent sales rack.

  • GIIIIIRL- the Jessica Simpson pants are incredible. She has a pair of dark wash skinnies that I practically live in. Only problem is they are about 50 dollars but motherhood usually has decent sales. Sizing is accurate too, in my opinion.
I'm 5'7", size 4, 135lb before pregnancy and the size small is perfect, even long enough for my long legs.
  • Omg my legs have gotten bigger I was a pretty pregnancy 6 and now I'm in large size maternity pants!!!
  • I agree with @sadyy131 H&M has great clothes that don't scream out "hey look at me! I'm wearing maternity clothes!"
  • On the old navy rant... I really don't understand how I can have a pair of size 16 maternity capris that still fall off my hips and a pair of size 16 maternity pants that could easily become too tight in the next few weeks. Ludicrous.
  • I had big boobs before I was pregnant, and the maternity shirts with absolutely zero stretch drive me crazy. I just bought a bunch of (sale!) cotton tanks from Motherhood Maternity, and I'm switching out various sweaters to wear with them. I also wear 36" inseam jeans, which are impossible to find in maternity. Bella bands are my friend!

  • Being almost 6 ft tall jeans are always an issue as is. I have YET to find maternity jeans long enough for me. Like apparently tall people don't get pregnant. So I took advantage and bought all leggings, figured I could pair them with flannels, boots, leg warmers, scarfs, etc and do the whole "comfy fall clothes" look. Only problem is, not only am I mostly legs but my torso is also long. So the fabric that's suppose to go over the baby bump, stops about half way on me. And my belly isn't even that big! So once again, apparently tall people are not suppose to have babies.
  • I absolutely love the Old Navy full panel maternity jeans. I have two pairs of those that I have been living in lol. I just got a really nice pair of dress pants from the Thyme Maternity outlet for $16 that I plan to wear to my shower. I would really love some maternity yoga pants but I can't find any in stores for some reason. :(
  • I'm with everyone suggesting Gap. Their classic skinny jeans were all I bought pre-pregnancy and I was a steady size 4, and, since I've gained about 30 lbs. at 30 weeks I'm wearing their maternity size 6 or 8 of the same style. Most of the advice I've read says to buy your pre-pregnancy size, but since most of my weight has gone to my lower body (thighs and hips) sizing up has been the most comfortable way to buy jeans that I'll realistically want to wear. They also always have deals like 40% off full price items and free shipping, and you can return almost anything to the store, which I think is easier than trying to mail back the items that don't work. The biggest plus for me is that while they have some stretch, they are a little heavier weight denim and look like regular jeans, not jean printed leggings.
  • Target has maternity yoga pants!

There are no more Target stores in Canada.

Yeah, the maternity leggings with the belly panels fit a bit oddly. I've been just pulling down the belly panel and sort of rolling it under my bump. My biggest pet peeve is how short some of these maternity tops are. I'm at the point where a bunch of tops a friend gave me are too short to cover my bump. I'm all for the long jersey maxi skirts and dresses, hopefully I'll make it to November without freezing!

Old Navy is notorious for horrible sizing.

I usually have really great luck with Old Navy. I don't remember ever having a sizing issue like that. In fact, it's usually my favourite place to shop for maternity clothes.

My complaint this time is that their fall colours suck! They currently only have 1 shirt that I actually like, and the colour would look horrible on me. :(  I really hope they get some new stuff soon, as I'm running out of shirts that fit!

  • I have one pair or maternity pants that fit okay, not perfect but okay.... The thing that I struggle with the most is that my butt has gotten huge! I already had a big butt to begin with but now my husband says he's not sure if I'm coming of going because my belly and butt look the same! I have not found a single pair or jeans that fit my butt and waist. It's either they are way too tight on my butt and got my waist or way too lose on the waist and fit my butt... I want to wear my clothes again!!!
