First birthday but no family in town

We don't have any nearby and don't know what to do for LO's birthday. We could just keep it low key at home but that seems sad for her. We are thinking of maybe visiting grandma and grandpa but that is a long car trip and might be hard to pull off for a weekend since her birthday is on a Friday.

What are other people doing in this situation or what might you do if you were?
