Re: New car/ house reno etc before baby?

  • I want a new car, I have an Impreza Outback sport but it has 100k miles and I'm just ready for something new. I've been waiting to finally get pregnant to pull the trigger on the Outback I want though!

No major house projects happening at this moment but I'm always open for a reno project  :D at some point we need new siding glass doors, to finish our gutted master bath before baby comes to claim the bath we use now, and redo the spare room into an office so I can work from home after baby comes.

  • We were debating trading in my car (it was falling apart), so as soon as we got a BFP, we knew it was time. We upgraded from my 2004 Grand Prix to a 2015 Chevy Equinox. We also have a few home projects to get done, but the nursery will definitely be our primary focus.
  • We got a new car and new house weeks before I had DS2.  We will need a new car again because I don't think that my Jeep Patriot will fit 3 car seats.  Not entirely sure how that is going to work out but I'm thinking DH will get a new one this time and then we will switch so I have the bigger one.

We have a lot of things planned for the house because we love projects (within reason!).  Right now we are completely re-doing the yard.  We just had 7 trees removed, one of which was a huge cottonwood so we also had the stumps ground down and are in the process of leveling the yard.  It's basically dirt and wood chips right now.  We are replacing the part of the fence that borders our neighbors yard with their help and putting in a gate so our kids can play in both yards and having entirely new landscaping done in the front and back as well as sod.  It's going to be beautiful but its a nightmare right now.

I think the rest of our big projects will get put off until after baby comes except some painting and maybe some work in the basement (finished but needs updating).
  • We are finishing our basement! This surprise baby really pushes the urgency of getting it done lol, need to adjust the kiddos room set-ups to accommodate this new little one. So that means we need to get our office downstairs.

  • We currently live in the bay area in CA but there is no way we can buy a house here for under 500k. Housing cost just keep going up with no end to be seen. The place where we're renting now, the value has nearly doubled in less than 5 years! DH is waiting to hear back on a job interview in NC so FX it will work out. I think once we get a good u/s and that it really sinks in that there will be another baby, it will give DH the push he needs to job hunt more.

  • We're buying our first house and close June 13th! After renting for 7 years I am so glad we will get to decorate a nursery however we want.

DH and I are always shocked when we watch house hunters in CA.  The housing market is completely insane there :(
  • We are getting a new car for sure... I have a Jeep Wrangler currently so DH is going to sell his truck, we will pay off the jeep and then buy something new.... I've narrowed it down to a Buick Enclave or a Jeep Grand Cherokee... Im leaning towards the jeep, but we shall see :)

as far as home reno's... We just did a few and had a list going for more but will probably put it on hold. We are actually debating on moving (gasp!)... Who knows :)

We got a new car before DD1 and I'm so glad we did.  We were recently in a car accident and my Jeep got totaled so we had to get a new one.  Car shopping with a toddler is sooooo much harder than shopping without kids.  You can't test drive unless you install a car seat or one parent has to stay with the kid and you have to take turns.  It was a real PITA.  So if you are thinking of upgrading soon, I would say that before baby is so much easier.

We just bought a house last year and are doing some renos.  We are painting the outside this summer, redoing our master bathroom, painting our hall and refinishing the doors.  Depending on the sex of the baby, we might redo the nursery, if it's another girl, we might just put her in DDs room and move DD to a new big girl room.  Either way, I'll be redecorating a room so that's fun!

@Emma61210 We had a jeep grand cherokee before our accident and I loved it.  We ended up with a Ford Edge and it's ok, but it doesn't compare to the jeep!!

I don't think we will be tackling anything to big. We will have to figure out a new plan for our home office as that will be the baby room. We might have to do some work in our basement.

We just moved in November. That was stressful enough. I couldn't imagine moving across the country while pregnant. Fingers crossed for the job interview.
  • DH & I are planning two different lives right now: he's unemployed and our living situation really depends on where he gets a job. There's not much opportunity in our area for his career, so there's a fair chance we'll be moving. On the other hand, my mortgage here is super cheap and we love this area. So we're planning on new floors, appliances, and painting the second room, but also looking into areas of interest for good rental homes.

  • Before we found out we were pregnant, we bought a new construction. It is supposed to be finished in December. I am not looking forward to moving at 8 months pregnant, but excited at same time.
  • We're buying a house and trading in both current cars after we find out how many babies we're having  (tons of twins in the family)

I did this with DS2 and it ended up being pretty great.  I barely had to move anything because I was so pregnant.  In fact, I was frequently yelled at by DH and his friends, told to "put that down" and finally sent to Target for some shopping so they didn't have to worry about it anymore.  Also, those last weeks drag on and having something to keep me really busy helped it go by so much quicker.  If you have a plan and stay organized it won't be too bad.
  • We're buying a house and trading in DH's ford mustang. Because, you know, mustangs and babies probably don't go together.
