Opinions? River tubing

I was invited to go on a river tubing float which is a really common recreational activity in PA. I have done it before and you basically sit in an intertube for four hours and float down a river. There are no rapids or rough currents. I'm an excellent swimmer and feel totally capable of going but fear I might receive judgement for doing this while pregnant. Anyone think I should not go?

Re: Opinions? River tubing

  • I don't think there is any reason you shouldn't go. Do the people you would be going with know you are pregnant and you think they would judge you or strangers? Either way, I say do it. Pregnant people can do things too and it's not like you're going to be going over crazy rapids or something dangerous. Go for it!

  • Yeah I would say go as well.  There is nothing dangerous about floating in a tube, or else you wouldn't be able to go on Lazy Rivers at a waterpark.

  • Do it! Sounds fun :)
  • If you're comfortable with it and it's really as low impact as floating down a lazy rive, GO FOR IT! If people are going to judge you for it then screw them! It's not their choice.

Go! Go! Unless the water is full of sewage or something, how can it possibly hurt you?

Shoots, I was at the beach last week and getting the crap beat out of me by waves kicked up by all these dang hurricanes we're getting and I was fine. Floating down a river sounds heavenly in comparison.

If anyone gets on your case, tell them off. You're pregnant, not a china doll. You should get to enjoy your summer, too!

  • I say go for it!  I was a lifeguard for a long time; and if my memory serves me correct, pregnant women can swim!

  • I'd go, it's so much fun! Just rember to wear lots of sunscreen and reapply! Since the sun just reflects right off the water and there's not always shade I got terrible sunburn last time I went, and I know pregnancy can make you even more sun sensitive.
  • Thanks everyone! I thought DH would have an issue with it because he's overprotective (occupational hazard) but he said go, have fun. My boss on the other hand, said YOU CANT DO THAT! So I am going on Monday, 75 and sunny :)
  • Hi,
This story ends up absolutely fine but i wanted to share just in case. At 7 weeks I went river tubing and actually ended up losing a lot or blood/clots and cramping that night. I had severe diarrhea and a fever. When I called the nurse on call, she said it sounded like I was miscarrying. The next day we went to the hospital and we were told the baby was fine, but I had two perigestetional bleeds in my uterus and they put me on pelvic rest for a week after the bleeding stopped. I have no way of knowing whether or not I over did it that day, hit a rock or two too hard while floating because the water was low, or if it was all a coincidence (probably the latter). The doctor said floating down a river would not cause you to miscarry. But what I would recommend is bringing lots of snacks, more than enough water and even something to throw on if the sun goes down and you're floating in the water, you could get cold. Really take care of yourself. I wanted to share in case you have any hesitation. I definitely don't believe in over worrying. Just go nice and easy. Have fun!
  • I went several times during my first trimester. Have fun!
  • That sound relaxing! It would to ably be good for you in that regard.
