Is spotting at 18 weeks normal?

I'm 18 weeks pregnant with my first baby...and I just started spotting...I'm starting to get scared and my doctor's office is closed until tomorrow morning...has anyone experienced something similar and is it normal?

I haven't experienced it. Most OB clinics have on call service if you're worried. You call the main number and there is usually a "if you need immediate assistance, press..." recording.

  • I'm not sure if it's normal or not at this point in pregnancy. Does your doctor's office have an on-call doctor? If so, I'd call. Keep an eye on the color (bright red isn't good) and amount. I'm wishing you the best and keep us posted!!

  • Did you do anything before the spotting started, or was it kind of spontaneous?
  • It can be. I can not be.

Any pain or cramping? What does the spotting look like?

    *edited for spelling.
  • Def call doc answering service. Good luck. Let us know how it goes
  • I'm 18 weeks as well and had some light pink spotting last weekend. I freaked out and called my midwife who told me just to wait and see if it progressed to anything that seemed more serious (heavier bleeding) and if it did to call her back and if not I would just see her in two days at a previously scheduled appointment. It stayed quite light and stopped after two days and she seems very unconcerned by it. I saw her yesterday and she said that it happens to a lot of women and there are many non-scary things that can cause it.
  • In the meantime, drink lots of water and put your feet up.
  • Bottom line - don't rely on a bunch of strangers. Call your Doctor. I think bright red blood would be more concerning than pink mucus, but I'm just guessing really. Hopefully it is nothing, but keep us posted!
  • I'm 17w5d and have been spotting the past two weeks. I had some cramping with it too and went to the doctor, and they diagnosed me with BV. I also had an ultrasound which showed everything was good with baby and placenta. Although I finished my meds for the BV I have still had some spotting every day (mostly in the am... And I haven't had sex at all). Not sure what's causing it but I called the doc again yesterday and she said as long as it's not more than 2 tsp of bright red blood I'm fine.

I know it's scary and can be disconcerting, but a lot of times it doesn't really have a meaning behind it. I would call your doc and let them know what your symptoms are and they will advise you what to do. Good luck :)
