Baby shopping..when?

I have been looking at the larger items for our twins nursery like crib, dressers and changing tables. Because of a previous loss and now the high risk of mono-di twins, I have procrastinated on buying anything. I am currently 20 weeks pregnant and would like to know have any of you bought nursry items yet? When is a good time to do so?

Re: Baby shopping..when?

  • I bought my crib back in July. We're going this weekend to look at a dresser and chair. I'm not buying anything other than those until after our anatomy scan on the 23rd.

  • We're ordering the furniture today or tomorrow. The majority of the furniture we're ordering is currently about 8 weeks out with one piece a 12 week wait (which isn't too important).

The 8 weeks is for the crib/dresser so if it takes longer it won't be too close to delivery date.
  • I think you can buy things whenever you want. I didn't buy much until after our baby showers with my first. But we did snag good deals on bigger items as we saw them.

For this one we really only need a handful of items (we kept almost everything from my son) so we're just spacing them out. We bought a swing almost right after we found out from a BST group, and then I bought a ring sling a few weeks ago when a company released one I had had my eye on. We'll probably buy a nice diaper bag in the next few weeks so that I can use it for our upcoming vacation, and then we'll get a video monitor closer to the arrival of new baby.

I think you can buy things whenever you feel comfortable. For me personally, I never really started getting into it or looking at things until after the 20(ish) week anatomy scan. Usually once I find out that baby will be okay, and I find out the sex I can connect a bit more and it helps me pick things out (not that knowing the sex really matters -- it's just something that helps me make the pregnancy feel real). But if you want to go ahead and get some things, I don't see why not. It's definitely personal preference I think!

  • I typically but when I see a good sale or buy. Big items I tend to leave for after the 1st trimester,
But other than that, it's whenever the time is right.

  • I am ordering a crib and dresser today. We hadn't bought anything until we knew the sex. We also celebrated by going to Carters and we each picked out an outfit for her. Otherwise, i probably won't buy anything else until after the shower. Do what you're comfortable with!
  • We are using the crib, recliner and dresser from DS's old room. I will buy a bookshelf for the new baby's room as well. But I am not in a hurry to buy anything until after our A/S scan next week when I know more of what direction I want to decorate the room in.

  • We have a lot of big ticket items leftover from DS which aren't expired yet (car seats, infant + convertible), crib, etc. I do plan to buy a swing and possibly a used crib if all parts are accounted for with no recalls though if I can find a great deal on one. I plan on starting to buy more items after our A/S on the 25th this month.

I haven't bought anything yet besides some hooded bath towels, and diapers only because they were really good sales. I will probably buy a few things a month once we know the sex.

  • Last time, we didn't buy anything until after the anatomy scan. We bought a few scattered items and the big stuff (dresser, crib, glider) by about 28wks, then bought the rest after the shower with the registry completion coupon.

This time, we don't anticipate anyone would get us anything but clothes, so we'll be getting the rest as it comes on sale after the a/s and before 34wks (my LO was early last time and we didn't even have the amazon boxes unpacked from the stuff we had purchased!)

  • I've been buying deals when I see them for a couple weeks now. I picked up both a tandem and jogging double stroller for steals so I can decide which one k like, the other we will sell again.
Clothing I will probably by a few outfits when I go shopping with a friend next week (we find out tomorrow what we are having).
  • We bought the crib early, and lucky we did because it ended up back order from the company for 6 months. It arrived about a week before LO arrived I swear.
  • Congratulations on your pregnancy! We just ordered a dresser and a rocker over the weekend. We will probably slowly order other things throughout the pregnancy. If you want to start looking for things now, go for it!

  • I haven't bought a thing yet, but only because I'm waiting for good sales and things. We're also getting a lot of secondhand items from friends, and there is a huge consignment sale in our area every fall so I'm waiting to see what I can get there before buying anything new. We're having twins, so we're trying to keep the cost reasonable. We also have a smallish house, so I don't have a lot of places to store big items. However, we are going to buy the car seats this month to take advantage of the BRU trade in event!

  • We bought the crib about a month ago but we're not planning on buying much else before our shower and Christmas. We had a buffet and nightstand that we're painting for a dresser/changing table combo and a side table for next to a glider. After the anatomy scan we'll probably buy some decor stuff and then some of the bigger things (car seat, stroller) that we wouldn't register for

  • What is everyone's experiences on Black Friday deals with babies? Are there usually any good stuff? Trying to decide if I should wait for the "big" stuff for then or just as I see sales now..

  • I bought a crib and dresser bc they were half off at pottery barn but I asked them to hold them for me so they won't be delivered until mid November. Probably going to wait another month or so to get other big items and start decorating. My husband is so nervous he doesn't want to do anything until January! Not happening...
  • We bought a stroller, car seat and glider this past week and I'm 18 weeks. We were able to use our completion coupon early at BBB for the stroller and glider. My husband is a good negotiater!

I never really feel like baby stuff is the focus of ads on Black Friday. It's always electronics and stuff like that.
I say if you see a really good deal now and it's not on your registry get it

That's what I was thinking, but wanted to get a more experienced opinion!

  • Hie, first baby and I'm really just thinking
  • I think we're going to start buying a few things here and there. I'm 20 weeks next week and we just found out we're having twins so I feel much less prepared than what I had.

I spent a ton of time planning a "coming home outfit" for dd but then she literally just wore some pants and a onesie because we were in the hospital longer than I though and she got to wear her own clothes the second day.
    We also did pics.
I did actually pack like 6 things for her to wear which worked out perfectly for having to stay
  • What is a reasonable amount to spend on the big ticket items? ( just getting an idea I know everyones budget and tastes will vary ) Im finding it hard to justify buying a super expensive crib for what 3 yrs max use. Lets say you bundle the nursery furniture ,stroller ,car seat (s) what are you spending ?

You can get a really nice and fully functional crib anywhere from $100-$200. The one we have is from Amazon. It also came with the parts to turn it into a toddler bed.

This is the one we have and it was $120 at the time. Dream On Me Violet 7 in 1 Convertible Life Style Crib, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GULAQ4S/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_GTX8vbM5APWKA

I could see spending around $100 or a little more on a nice dresser because that will likely be their dresser for their entire childhood, teen years and maybe that will be the one they take to their first apartment with them.

You can get a car seat stroller travel system anywhere from $150-300 depending what your looking for. There are some types that are more. Ours is a graco system and was around $170 I think.
  • We bought the a Fisher Price Providence Crib off amazon for $129 and the matching dresser for $259. Amazon has a ton of really great deals!!!

The stroller (baby jogger city mini GT) we registered for is $350ish and car seat (Chicco Keyfit 30) is $299. I don't really expect someone to buy those unless a few people go in on it. But a completions coupon is great!!!
  • I'm going to a HUGE consignment baby/kids sale today.. Hoping to get some of the bigger ticket items people probably wouldn't get as shower gifts and then I'll wait until after the shower to buy anything else. Family/friends tend to spend $50 and under at showers I've been to so I figure I'll end up buying the $100+ items myself
  • @wisco29 I love that crib! Too bad it's asymmetrical, my husband won't go for it :(

Yah it's funky but it works. We were given a crib and failed to realize it was a drop down one which is recalled and super unsafe so we just bought one on Amazon that was inexpensive.

  • @inomniaparatus Yup, everything has to be even - must go with his engineering self :)
  • First, I hope everything goes well with your pregnancy and you deliver healthy twins. Im a FTM and I bought clothes a little after I found out the gender at 17 weeks. I plan to start buying big items like the bassinet & car seat maybe after the anatomy scan Im scheduling at 21 weeks in Oct.

  • @wisco29 I read several Amazon reviews that the crib package either missed several parts or the screw holes weren't where they were supposed to be, etc. did you have any problems with the crib? I LOVE the asymmetry!!!
  • Whenever you want :)
  • I found that there are not a lot of Black Friday deals on baby stuff just FYI. So buy things as you find good deals.
  • @wisco29 I read several Amazon reviews that the crib package either missed several parts or the screw holes weren't where they were supposed to be, etc. did you have any problems with the crib? I LOVE the asymmetry!!!

Yah one of those reviews is me, one of the boards was cracked or something when we got it but they sent a new piece and no issues since.
I don't know if it was their fault or the fault of FedEx. The FedEx people we had were pretty lazy.
  • We caught a really good deal and just ordered crib dresser and glider. They haven't been delivered yet but getting these big ticket items really makes me excited to work on the nursery
  • We bought our crib, dresser, and glider in August because we came across a great deal. We aren't buying anything else until after our shower. It turned out good we ordered the dresser because it's back ordered and not set to ship until January. I'd say though it really is whatever you are comfortable with and want to do.
  • I say buy as you find it, especially if it's on sale! I'm a couponer so when I find something that we will need for baby I get it, hence why I have a closet full of diapers and wipes already. I started couponing for diapers and wipes when I found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks. It never hurts to save money. Even if you want to shop just to appease an urge that you have I feel that it's fine. We found out baby's sex on Monday and the same day I went online to buy him some Baltimore Ravens gear. So moral to the story... I say buy things gradually and also keep in mind things you may get as a gift if you're having a baby shower. Best wishes to you and your LO.
