These posts make me curious to see others responses.....but also makes me feel terrible about myself....I agree....can we not so these? Lol. It's my fault for reading but still!
I'm in the healthy weight gain range for my body size/BMI & I'm STILL self conscious as crap...it's impossible not to be!
We are pregnant. Everybody will eventual gain weight or there's an issue. Who knows someone who may not have gained anything yet could end up gaining more overall by the end of the pregnancy than someone who's gained more currently. I'm just hoping today in my healthy 25-30 lb range.
While I agree that she should take her doctor's opinion most to heart, sometimes it isn't the clear facts that people want. Sometimes it's a reassurance that they're not alone that they're seeking.
It's easier sometimes to know that someone is going through the same thing you are. Hopefully, this is what the original post was about.
While I hate these threads and think it's silly to compare I am going to put my number out there. Most of these posts are from people saying they have lost weight or gained a minimal amount. Last I checked I gained 18-20 lbs and I am 23 + 2. I am healthy, happy and so is my baby. I am not worried about it because I try my best to throw in some veggies, excercize and take my pre-natals. If I gain 30 or 60 who cares. Try your best now work it off later. This is the one time in your life people can't judge you for weight gain. So as long as I make a few good choices along the way I don't plan on worrying about it.
I was tiny before I got pregnant, I'm 23 weeks and almost 20lbs heavier then I was when I got pregnant... I have kinda let myself be a fat kid though, but oh well I normally don't like to eat and being pregnant I do and I have had no self control, haha. Soon it will be all over though and I can go back to tiny old me.
A "fat kid" and "tiny old you" seriously... X( [-X Did you bother to read any of that thread? Weight concerns and issues are very sensitive to most of us. Perhaps choose your words more carefully next time.

I'm 22 weeks today ftm and I have only gained 2lbs. So far. No worries, here by me. I can tell everything is going well so far and baby is growing because my bump is growing. Steady weight gain is my plan.

You normally don't like to eat?
Yeah, seriously, what? Are you human? Who doesn't like to eat?

Iv gained 12 so far at 22 +2 .. Mainly because I can't stop eating .. If I don't eat chocolate I might lose my Mind and commit a homicide
My baby shouldn't have a convict mother so I'm not worried abt the gain. It's in the larger interest of the baby
Due to a series of misunderstandings at my appt yesterday, the nurse definitely either thinks I'm obsessively worried that I've gained too much weight or too little. I'm not sure which. It was all very confusing.

Ditto. About 20w and gained about 2-3lbs but my bump keeps growing and I'm eating a ton. I was worried I wasn't nourishing her enough, but my dr said it's fine for now
Lurking.... people should include facts of what they were before becoming pregnant. Pre pregnancy... over weight people tend to lose weight or not gain that much. I think height, pre-pregnany weight, BMI's all play in.... plus everyone is different. For example there are some ladies who gain 60 to 70 lbs and it falls off when they give birth but than there are some ladies that the weight stays on them and never leaves. Everyone is different no need to compare.
I am 21 weeks and up 7lbs. Just because we are pregnant does not give us the excuse to overindulge and eat whatever, whenever. This is the time when you should be eating healthy and exercising however the doctor sees fit. Gaining 50 to 60lbs during pregnancy is not a healthy thing and yes a lot of it will come off, a lot of it will not. Just remember that.
@katty422 I could not agree more. My instinct is that many of the women with little weight gain at 20-24 weeks may have been at a higher BMI pre-pregnancy, and that is likely why their doctors aren't concerned. It makes me sad when healthy women compare themselves to those numbers and get discouraged, as it is totally misleading information.
In general, I really wish this conversation would come to screeching halt. As it has been said ad nauseam, everyone is different. Pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy, and post pregnancy. This is why doctors exist and the internet is not the forum for these dicussions and questions.

Depends on the mom and the pregnancy. As a general rule I agree with you, but there are certainly situations in which extra weight gain is healthy. I had twins my last pregnancy and started out a size 0 on a bloated day. I gained nearly 50 lbs and lost all but about 6 lbs by the time they were a year old (I seem to keep some breastfeeding weight, as I've noticed a lot of slim women do) without dieting or resuming my previous fitness level. This pregnancy I'm on track to gain a fraction of what I did last pregnancy because it's a different pregnancy with different needs.
There are also complications that can cause a mom to gain extra weight, such as preeclampsia, which can cause water retention. Those moms also usually lose the weight. A friend of mine gained a seriously huge amount of weight when she had preeclampsia, was told by her doctor to eat still more than she was, and lost everything within a couple months.
Also some women just react differently to pregnancy hormones, body changes, and symptoms like morning sickness. A whole range of factors can cause a woman taking good care of herself and her baby to gain a lot of weight.
I think it's important to eat healthy and exercise during pregnancy and, again, agree with your statements as general rules. But keep in mind that they don't hold true for all women or all pregnancies and women whose weight gain falls outside the recommendations aren't necessarily being unhealthy. Nor will they necessarily keep the weight on after the baby is born. I don't know if you meant them as such, but your statements could easily be interpreted as shaming women who happen to be gaining more weight than the norm, which isn't very nice.
Yes, this should really only be a discussion between you and your doctor. People are far too different, in terms of pre pregnancy weight, complications like preeclampsia (as PP mentioned) and things like bed rest, etc., to compare weight gain without knowing all of the circumstances. Your doctor, however, will absolutely be able to tell you if you're on track, specifically to your situation!
If anyone is looking for a general ballpark of normal pregnancy weight gain, there's this from Web MD, but seriously, talk to your doctor if you're concerned and don't compare yourself to strangers on the internet! (I mean, that's probably a good rule of thumb for other topics too, haha.)
Ask your health care provider how much weight you should gain. A woman who was average weightbefore getting pregnant should gain 25 to 35 pounds after becoming pregnant. Underweight women should gain 28 to 40 pounds. And overweight women may need to gain only 15 to 25 pounds during pregnancy.

Thank you so much for this. At 22 weeks and starting out overweight (size 12) I have gained 15 lbs at this point due to continued morning sickness, eating is the only thing that makes it better and the medicine they have me on makes me so exhausted it's very hard to exercise. I worked out pretty hard before getting pregnant and my doctor said that when you were very active and go to almost nothing then it can cause extra weight gain. Not everybody can keep up with running and lifting while pregnant and there's no reason to make them feel bad for doing whatever it takes not to throw up all day.

That's a good point...except in my case I was a healthy BMI pre-pregnancy (lower half of the healthy range even), never threw up once, have been eating a ton, and my belly keeps expanding...but the scale just isn't reflecting it yet, and my doctor is still not concerned and said he won't be unless I'm still not gaining in 3rd trimester. Weight is often VERY random in pregnancy, and VERY specific to the person. I know others who thew up every day, ate healthily, and still gained a lot. As long as your doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't be
I was looking for this thread. I'm quite curious as to others experiences. I know there's ppl who are annoyed by this discussion but they should probably just not click.
I am 38, overweight, 5'1" started at 155. I'm 21 weeks and have gained about 11 lbs. Which is more than I meant to so far but I am tired and placenta previa and my husband has been lovely about getting take out and keeping me off my feet. So I'm not making great food decisions. That has to change immediately.
