Gtky: how did you meet your best friend? (Not your so)

I'm bored. How did you meet your best friend? The one who isn't your SO :)

How long have you been friends? What is the funnest (yes, I'm using a non-word) thing you have done together?

Re: Gtky: how did you meet your best friend? (Not your so)

  • I'm sure this isn't the answer you were looking for but I feel like I haven't met my best friend yet... I feel like everytime a friendship starts with me, we end up wanting different things or having different priorities and never really getting "close". Perhaps it's my own trust issues but I have many people I consider friends that are there for me and always down for a good time.

  • She ran down the street in a bathing suit chasing after my dad and I in first grade. She said she wanted to be friends lol. We've been friends for seventeen years now, which sounds so crazy! The funnest thing we've done together is probably when we were in high school and went to Venice beach. We stayed there a lot during summers and saw some crazy shit lol
  • Sixth grade cheer camp roomies. We roomed every year after that, including through and after college. Love that woman.

  • I met my best friend shortly after starting our senior year, she had just moved. We almost immediately clicked and have been best friends for almost 12 years. We have taken best friend trips (Chicago), gone on family vacations, lived together, etc. She was my MOH and I am so glad she has been there throughout my life. She keeps it real but also knows me and how to get things across. We are both married and she has 2 kids so we don't get to talk as often, but we text all the time and when we talk/hang out, nothing has changed.

This makes me want to call her/give her a big hug!
  • My best friend and I met my sophomore year of high school and her senior year.  We worked together at Erma's Country Kitchen and I helped her clean up after spilling tea all over one of our guests.

I think one of the most fun things we have ever done was meet up with some guys that we knew and we spent the entire night at a movie theatre.  By the entire night, I mean the entire night.  One of our guy friends worked at the theatre and we watched all the new movies from about 10 p.m. - 6 a.m.  It wasn't anything crazy it was just some good old fashioned fun.
  • @sunnysideup7300 maybe you'll meet your new best friend tomorrow :)

  • I've been pretty lucky...my best friend & I met when we were 4 on the first day of kindergarten, & have been friends ever since. Of my closest friends, 2 are from kindergarten, 2 from the start of high school, & 1 I met through DH. I don't know if I can pick just one fun thing we've done together. A trip to Dominican, our weddings, numerous cottage trips, the birth of her 3 children (DH & I are the godparents of one)...I could go on & on!

I just texted mine for the same reason :)

  • She and I met at daycare the summer before we started 2nd grade. There was a boy chasing us around the playground trying to kiss us and we pushed him out of the tree house. We've been inseparable ever since. She is more like a sister than a BFF. I don't know how I'd do life without her.

  • I met my best friend on the first day of college.  We were in the same orientation week group.  They made us do super lame activities and we bonded while rolling our eyes at each other. ;) I hate that we don't get to see each other often, (I live in GA, she's in OH) but we text daily.

The most fun we've had together was when we were roommates for two years in college!

  • I met my best friend when I was 7 and she was 5, she climbed up a tree and got "stuck" and her mom came down the street to find me because I was always climbing trees. So I went up and helped her down, we've been friends ever since! 16 years!
  • My best friend (and oldest friend) is my twin sister! I am blessed to have a few other really great friends that I have met at various points in my life. :)

  • She sat next to me the first day of grade 1. We've known each other for 23 years now. I was a weird and not very sociable kid with very strict parents and she stuck with me through all that.
  • First year of university at the varsity golf team try-outs. We've known each other for 9 years now but are about 4 hours apart. We have managed to get together 2-3 times every summer. The 'funnest' thing we have done would be our trip to Florida after first year, went for a week and had a blast!

My best friend and I remember our meeting differently. She remembers when we were in 3rd grade, she had a cleft palate surgery and couldn't go out to recess, so every day one person got to stay inside and play with her, and she remember the day I stayed in with her and she thought I was neat. I remember in 4th grade at indoor recess I went up to her and two other people she was playing with and asked if I could play. She told me that they were the Bermuda triangle, and I couldn't join them because then they would be a square.  :)) Of course, at the time I didn't think it was very funny.

We were in different classes until 6th grade when our friendship really took off and we have been friends ever since. She was my maid of honor, and even though she lives in a different state now and I only get to see her once or twice a year (and we talk on the phone every month or so) when we get together it is like no time has passed at all. I think one of my life goals is to end up within easy driving distance of her someday.

ETA: I forgot the "funnest" thing we have ever done together! When we were in high school we wrote a story together over the internet on a writing forum over the course of several years. It was super nerdy but it was a blast. :-B

  • In middle school Select Choir - She was 11 I was 12. 26 years later we are still going strong. We can fight like cats and dogs, not speak for 2-3 years, and pick up right where we left off. She is always my first call when something goes wrong, or right. Funnest thing... I don't know of just one. Random road trips to other states or even Canada (grew up in Rochester, NY) parties, knitting... She is the one I make bad decisions with and the one that guides me on the right path when I need it. She is the sister of my heart and I love her almost as much as I love my hubby and my boys. She's my person.
  • I technically met my best friend my first day of college classes (7 years ago). We had two classes together and sat near each other, but never talked. The following year we were in the same class again and intentionally grouped with her for a project. She's an awesome INTP to my INTJ; we can talk about anything. I miss her dearly.

The most fun thing we've done is probably the last day of finals when we went to the zoo and went crazy doing weird things and taking funny pictures.

  • My 3 best friends and I met when we were 5 years old! We met at church and have been through everything together!! They were all bridesmaids in my wedding this past weekend :) I can tell them everything and feel more comfortable around them than almost anyone else in my life. They really are more like sisters at this point!! All of my best memories involve the 3 of them :)
  • We were roommates in college. We both transferred as Juniors and we probably never would have met otherwise because we are pretty different and were even more so then. It's been 15 years (whoa). We flew to London and then Vienna together one Thanksgiving.
  • @sunnysideup7300 can we be friends??

I feel the same way. I have friends but no one I'm exceptionally close with anymore. My best friends growing up and I now have different priorities, lost shared interests etc. It's hard finding new friends as a grown up!

  • My freshman roommate at college and now BFF were friends in HS.  And shared the same name, BFF didn't attend the same college.  During a road trip we met up with BFF and we kind of duked it out because we share the same somewhat uncommon name....and fast forward 15 years and we're the bestest of friends.  WALLAH!

  • we met in college. It was my sophomore year; her junior year. We sat next to each other in a class for our shared minor that required a lot of partner work. Then we started sitting with each other in another class for our minor. We also shared the same major and since she was a year ahead of me she was kind of like a "big sister" and told me what books to buy and which I could just borrow from her. We became roommates my senior year (which almost didn't happen because I was supposed to live in the back apartment of the house but one of the girls in the front wanted to switch to the back of the house.) So glad I offered to move! We became really close. We don't get to see each other often but every time it's like we were never apart!
  • I met mine when we were four years old (27 years ago). Her mother and mine were friends first. When her grandmother died, she asked my mother to look after hers because she had Epilepsy and Post Polio Syndrome.

We met on the sidewalk and started playing hopscotch with chalk. We became friends before we knew our mothers were friends. Our families moved everywhere together, lived together at some points (we had a family of four, they had a family of five), and went through many trials and triumphs together over the years.

I cannot think of the funniest thing we have done together because there were so many so picking one: When we lived in Phoenix, AZ, we figured out that we could dig beneath the dirt and find clay in the earth. We dug it up and built things out of it. One time, we decided it would be funny to make what looked like cookies out of the clay. We placed real chocolate chips on them and sprinkled them with shaved chalk powder. We tricked all of the adults into thinking they were real and then told them what it was after they took a huge bite ;;)

We pranked the adults all of the time and laughed our asses off! I still laugh out loud when I think of the one time we got in our first and only fight. I can't even remember what on earth it was about, but I remember it being silly. We kicked each other in the vaginas and made up immediately. They say it really hurts for men to get kicked in the balls, but it REALLY hurts being kicked in the vagina.

    I have 3.
    1. Met her in junior high.  Have had a lot fun times with her, but we went to prom as a group and then went bowling which is probably one of my favorite memories.
    2. Met her at my old work, she used to be my boss.  Again a lot of fun times, my favorites are the baseball games we would go to.
    3. Met her at my current job.  We always seem to have a good time.

This quote always makes me think of them:

“good friends are like stars you don't always see them but you know they are there.”

  • Met my bestie freshman year of a university. She was a friend of a friend and we clicked. That was almost 15 years ago. We've celebrated her wedding and mine together and had lots of fun during countless weekend visits. We have lived states apart for 10 years but always manage to visit at least 1 or 2 times a year. Me, DH, and DS are actually visiting her (and a lot of my family and friends) this weekend. She and her H are "auntie" and "uncle" to DS. They're great. The best people I know, literally.

  • My best friend and I met when I moved out to a little country town freshman year of HS. I was the new kid in a very small class, so I stuck out horribly....not to mention we were poor, so my clothes made me stand out even worse. No one wanted to talk to me really, but I saw another girl sitting by herself during lunch, and sat down. She was incredibly sarcastic, and not the nicest person, but I just kept at her trying to get her to open up. It was hard for her to trust me because she was constantly tormented in school. She was born with a congenital issue with her eyes, and had to have several surgeries that caused mild disfigurement of her eyes. She was also considered legally blind, but could still see....and well, kids are so cruel. She just didn't trust anyone when I met her. I ended up driving her to and from school almost daily, sitting by her in all my classes and at lunch. Once she opened up I could see just how amazing she was.....and the rest was history.

To this day she is still my "bestie" even though I've made good friends throughout my military travels....I just love her to pieces. Our "funnest" memory happened one night at Walmart. We gathered up some boxes of condoms, and randomly placed them in people's full carts when they weren't looking...lol. Not our most mature moment, but it was a hell of a night full of laughter!

  • My best friend and I met in our first year of nursing school in a counselling lab (basically where you talk through each other's problems so you get better at talking through your patients problems) and I remember thinking how kind she seemed. But we didn't really get close until we were placed together for our labour and delivery clinical rotation. Which was also probably one of the most fun things we've done together. We still reminisce about "the good old days on l&d".
  • I've known my BFF since the past 15 years. We met in college, lived in the same paying guest place, although we went to different colleges. I stayed with her when I began working. She was so upset when I moved back to my hometown that she didn't come to say bye to me!
We went to see a play and then came back by auto about midnight- she knows I love plays so we went even though she was apprehensive about how we'd come back.

  • I have two best friends and I am fortunate that we all live in the same town.

One I met 7 years ago at a mutual friends bachelorette party, we started talking and just instantly hit it off. We've been close ever since.

The other one I have met three years ago. She moved to our town as a teacher and  became friends with DH's best friend from high school. I was always worried that dh's best friend will end up with someone that I am not going to like, because we spend so much time together. Then the two of them got together and the rest is history.
  • Hard for me. ONly because I'm so blessed. I have 3. One I met when I was 4; the second I met when we were in 7th grade; and the third was my sophomore year.

My favorite though (my Christina to my Meredith) was the one I met when we were 13. She was in my gym period but we became close when an 8th grade trip to DC had too much girl drama and we were put into the same hotel room. We have been inseparable ever since. She even lived with my family during her own family troubles.

My funnest memory of us is pretty hard to narrow down.
I would say it was one of our many sleep overs (we still do them in our late 20's) that always end up in the kitchen till 5am with beer and pizza and just being together. Sounds silly but it's the little things right?

  • Met her on move-in day at University freshman year. We were random roommates and did just about everything together. She lives 6 hours away, but we still stay in touch with a visit at least once a year. We still text when one of our favorite movies is on - usually when ABC Family is doing their Harry Potter marathon weekends :)
The funniest thing we've done... so many awesome moments together, but I think one of the best times we had together was the winter of our freshman year and we took lunch trays from the cafeteria and went sledding down the biggest hill on campus. It was so much fun and I'm shocked we made it out without any broken bones.

Also, my sister and brother are my best friends. We text everyday and pretty much all day long. Excited to see both of them in two weeks for a sibling weekend adventure. :)

We went to the same church, and have known each other since we were 4 years old. We didn't really get close until I was in 8th grade and she was in 7th, then I'd say by 10th/11th grade we were best friends. She was SUCH a brat when we were little - I still see a bit of the same attitude come out when she's really tired and hungry, lol, but now she's the sweetest person ever.

Our most fun adventures were never the ones that make good stories. They were weird road trips to places just a few hours away, or watching the same movie 10 times in one summer. That's the stuff that sticks in my mind.

  • We met in 1st grade (21 years ago). We had class together and were in girl scouts together. She was my MOH and I was hers. I felt so honored because her MOH was her sister and the other bridesmaids were her SIL's but she still had me as matron of honor. We have had so many good memories over the years its hard to pick just one. I would say one of the top memories was our weekend road trip from Wisconsin to Texas when we were 19 in my 2 door Ford Escort. We went to visit my DH (fiancé at the time) before he got deployed. It was a 24 hour drive we left at 10 pm on Thursday got there Friday night. Left Texas at midnight Sunday and got home Monday night. It was a blast.

Not sure how we became best friends, but we have been ever since I actually figured out her real name. She was my MOH and we don't live in the same town anymore, but we talk everyday and have a million jokes that everyone else would probably think were very weird....

My newer best friend I met where I currently live. We see each other pretty often and don't really go a day without talking. We've known each other for about 6 years now.

I can't even come up with the most fun thing I've done with either of my best friends. Too many to count! Many vacations, weddings, random nights doing nothing! Love them :\">

I met my BFF at my first job when I was 17. I worked at a popular chain drugstore as a cashier and she worked in the beauty department. Well one day I was sorting through the returns and I had my purse under the counter so I could keep texting my current boyfriend on my phone which was against company policy. At the time my BFF and I didn't really know each other yet and she saw me crouched over the return bin with my purse nearby and accused me of stealing and told the store manager. I got written up and was subject to dumping my entire purse out in front of her and my manager to prove I hadn't stolen a thing.

A few months later I got transferred over to the beauty department much to her disappointment. For the first few months we worked opposite days so I rarely saw my enemy at the time. Then our department boss changed her work schedule and I ended up working with my now BFF every single shift unloading shipments/setting up displays. We worked along side each other in awkward silence for weeks. One day our rugs were being replaced at the store and my BFF tripped over one of the tools the construction workers left laying around. I saw her start to fall and I leaned over and caught her before she smacked her head on a shelf. Almost 9 years later we're BFF's.

BFF is 33 and I'm 26 so in a lot of ways she is the older sister I never had. We still laugh to this day that we hated each other so much at first because today we couldn't imagine our lives without each other. BFF was recently diagnosed with MS and it's been a really tough year for her but it has made our friendship even stronger. Our tagline is keep your friends close and your enemies closer!

  • My BFF and I met when she became my next door neighbour! We were 6 and 7 at the time and I remember it being particularly exciting because I was allowed to ride my bike on the road with her. We went to different schools but always hung out once we were home. Even back then we were that kind of friends where we would spend 72 hours straight with each other and then someone would just be like, "I'm going home now." hahaha. We joked that this year we would take a vacation together for our 25th anniversary.

About 5 years ago she moved out to BC with her husband (I'm in ON) but we text all the time and see each other about once per year. *loss mentioned* This summer I had planned a visit to go see her after a conference in Vancouver for work and then I found out that I was going to MC. The week I had with her was one where I knew there was no HB but the MC hadn't started yet. I wasn't sure if I should just go home or if I should continue with the plan of visiting her. I decided I needed my BFF (and she has had 2 MC's before) and I don't know how I would have made it through that time, and the time afterward, without her. Her support was so invaluable, I'd still be a total wreck if I didn't have her to talk me down! Gotta call her tonight!!
