Pads to have on hand?

I am due in 18 days, and have been trying to prepare everything.  I went to Big Lots to buy some pads and got a 24 package of regular maxi pads and then a 24 package of heavy duty overnight ones.  Is this good to start with?  I do live literally a one minute drive from the store so it will be easy to get more once I need them.  Just wanted to have a little bit stocked up for the first couple of weeks that baby is here.

Re: Pads to have on hand?

  • Should be fine. The hospital will probably give you a bunch too.

  • I skipped the big maxi pads and went straight for the always infinity pads they are
The best. Super thin but very absorbent. They don't feel like you're wearing a diaper!

  • 48 should be plenty for awhile!

  • Thanks for the replies, just wanted to be prepared in case I didn't feel like going to the store and my husband would get SO confused buying pads!!
  • I personally liked the comfort of having Depends on hand. Not too sexy, but it took a few days for me to regain bladder control after having my daughter. It was good to know that if I didn't make it to the bathroom, they had my...back.
  • That should be a good start. I suggest making some padsicles out of a bunch too. It feels amazing when your lady parts are sore!

  • My midwife also recommended depends! I was too shy to buy them at the store so I ordered them on Amazon along with our vitamin K drops! When this last delivery arrives- I will have every supply and nursery item we need and we will be officially BABY READY! Wow!!!
I've done everything but write the thank you notes...
  • I gave birth Monday and am having incontinence issues as well. I highly recommend asking for as many pads they'll give you. You may not be allowed to drive for a while after if you tear like I did. They said no driving for a week. Just make sure you have enough pads for a week I change about every two hours.

I've been wearing Depends since giving birth 6 days ago ... So convenient and I don't have to worry about bleeding on my underwear, and they're comfortable. They also came in handy when my water broke at home; I wore one to the hospital and didn't soak through :)

    What is a padsicle?
It's a postpartum pad to use that helps bring comfort... Pinterest has a bunch of variations- here's one https://www.tallmomtinybaby.com/2013/05/padsicles-new-moms-perfect-companion.html?m=1

Vitamin D drops is what you want for baby.
Vitamin K is a shot they give the baby in the hospital. Just making sure you bought the right thing @PregNancyClark
  • With #1 I changed the pads really often in the beginning. I bought 30 night pads and 30 regular pads to start. I can always buy more.

Padsicles are really just for the first 24-48h, after that, ice isn't helpful for healing, but the solution (witch hazel, aloe, etc) is still very soothing. I bought EMAB mama bottom spray, and I'll just use the plain ice packs the hospital provides (I'll be there 48h).

  • I have Tena (adult diapers). My midwife actually has me use the adult diaper AND a pad, just as you would the mesh underwear at the hospital with a pad. So place a pad in the diaper and I've got tons of coverage in case of a leak. And that way I don't go through a ton since there's only about a dozen adult diapers in a regular pack.

I used the padsicles longer. It may not have been healing but it felt good.

Some people opt out of the vitamin K shot and prefer to give it orally. That's probably what she meant

I understand that but that's generally administered at the hospital still as it protects them against bleeds in the first 8-10 days.

Eta a search of Amazon shows no results for Vitamin K drops. Doesn't seem to even be available.

I'm sort of thinking she meant to say vitamin D drops but I could be totally wrong!!
